This sounds so close to star flight, and old game from the late 80's or early 90's. One of the most ambitious games of its time. That game had hundreds of solar systems that you needed to navigate to. You could mine planets for resources to sell and upgrade your ship. There were probably 7 or 8 alien races some hostile that you would need to fight. Your initial goal is to find habitable planets for the people of earth. Eventually you need to find some sort of artifact that saves earth. Amazing game and available on gog.com

Now if this game had those kinds of additional objectives, it would be more to my liking.

Do this today: Instead of $%*#!@& on a game you're not going to play or movie you're not going to watch, say something good about a piece of media you're excited about.

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.

        Re: No Man's Sky

I'm still so unsure of this but at the same time I want to play this game so badly.

I don't want to miss out on what everyone is experiencing. I feel as if good or bad this is a game that will set some sort of new standard, that will be mentioned as a great foundation for what games attempt in the future.

But then I worry that I'll definitely get bored going from planet to planet just walking around for no real reason. It really depends on what exploration is actually about.

I remember when I was a kid imagining this very sort of game. A game where you could get on a spaceship and just travel through space finding new planets. But as a kid, that was enough to get me excited. Not to say you're a kid if that's all you need, but my tastes have definitely changed since and I want more from that exploration.

Honestly, I rather be looking for new elements and resources than animals. I guess I can do that too.

I just hope I don't land on a planet where the animals are named after farts or something stupid.

Pretty much how I feel. I don't want to explore "because the game designers said that's how I should play it," I need meaning to it. Yes, there will be awe playing for the first time for myself (though unfortunately crashing into a planet's atmosphere is but two whole seconds long and largely on the unrealistic side), but if they want me to log dozens if not hundreds of hours into this game, and if this is truly one to stand the test of time, it has to hook me for more than the initial wow factor.

I hope it pulls through, but I think that this title started off as something more techy and less game-y and then they really made it into one when it picked up steam at E3. This all kind of reminds me of Backbreaker (which, let's get straight, I have logged dozens of hours into).

I see Seth MacFarlane has writing credits for this game, so unfortunately you might be out of luck on that.

Yeah, these are my concerns as well...i'm guessing they'll be answered, we just haven't seen everything yet (I think)....

To be fair, Seth MacFarlane is a huge space guy. He Executive produced Cosmos a year or so ago. So I doubt he will use this platform to be silly.

Although my MacFarlane bit was a joke, yeah I know he'll definitely go serious when he needs to.

I'm not really sure if this game has writing of any kind. I mean how were they able to generate this many names? Surely they didn't just come up with them. Probably some sort of syllable generator going on, I suppose. No way could they do billions upon billions of planet names and types on their own.

Do the planets all have names though? I've started intentionally avoiding the videos for this game so I don't start overthinking things but my understanding was that there were lots of things to explore and, if you were the first to find it, name. I guess I thought planets were part of that.

via the Planets entry of a NMS wikia:

All planets are procedurally generated which means terrain, fauna, and flora are all unique to that specific planet. When you enter into a planet's atmosphere, you will have discovered it and it will be given a procedurally generated name by default. You may change the name of your discovered planet after uploading a few exploratory reports to the beacon.

I might be mistaken, but im pretty sure everything has a given name, and if you discover it you can give it an alternate name/nickname.

Yeah sorry. I meant 13 year old gamers giving things names that are silly.

Though I guess it's not as if scientist don't already do that.
