This game doesn't look to have nearly as much creative freedom as Minecraft.

I'm still extremely skeptical about how much variety there will truly be and how important that variety will be. I'm getting this game day 1, but my expectations are very low with it.

If your expectations are so low, maybe you should think about not getting it day 1 and wait for impressions and reviews.

My expectations are very high. But I also know there is a possibility it won't live up to them. But I think most people interested in this game have pretty high expectations.

Please don't take this as me bashing your opinion. I'm definitely not. It's just that if I have very low expectations for a game I usually don't buy it day 1.

They're not low in the sense that I think I won't enjoy the game. They are low in the sense that I don't think this game will live up to the hype. I feel I'll get my money's worth and enjoy it for awhile, but I don't expect a very deep game that I'll be playing this time next year despite the size of the Universe in the game.

You do know there wont be huge mods being released for this game right? Since the game runs on one giant server they wont have huge mods to totally change the dynamic of the game. However there may be offline mods released but definitely not online ones outside of small ones like UI, etc...

Last I read there is no giant server. It runs locally and sounds like it's just a DB of hashes representing the worlds/space that are procedurally generated once sometime visits them and then stores your discoveries and names of planets. Think it was speculation but makes sense.

Thats partly why I dont think they will allow a huge ammount of modding. I mean making new creatures and such then going and discovering them.

Of couse everything atm is speculation atm. But just most signs point to no. I even thought I heard the dev say something about it as well.

I never said new creatures or anything huge

I am sure someone will make mods to add realism/real science, make survival harder etc. basically tweaks to "under the hood" mechanics

I don't think it runs on one giant server, I would be shocked if it's not mod-able

I understand that it won't be like stellaris where you can change anything and everything in the game.

But isn't this OK since it's totally optional? Nobody would force you to install a mod, you would know what mod you download and install.

I saw JareBear's mod comment to mean things like someone modding spaceships to look like something NASA created in real life.

Nothing that would actually affect the outcome of the game but can add to the individual user's preferred experience.

Has the dev taken an actual position on modding? Wasnt really expecting anything.

If there's concrete info on it I haven't seen it. If anyone has any links to quotes from Devs let us know

                          Either way

This is one of my most anticipated games in years. From the moment I heard about it I was extremely interested in it.

I recognize I am in danger of overhyping it to myself and having unrealistic expectations.

I remind myself that this is an indie developer and the project itself seems kinda like "the little engine that could" type of story. It seems to me like they created this cool space/Galaxy/planet procedural generator as an engine, they showed it to people, and it took off and became this big title that they've been trying to build a "game" into (all the stuff outside of the base exploration" for the last couple years.

I am sure I will probably be a little letdown by the grand scope, or lack of, of impact you can make as far as species interaction and shaping the worlds around you but the tech behind the game seems impressive and if it succeeds I'm sure we see a bigger budget, fully fleshed out sequel/expansion down the road

Game on steam hitting some of the same notes as No Man's Sky, free to play this weekend.

Steam is the ultimate destination for playing, discussing, and creating games.

Certainly missing the charm of the NMS art direction and some polish.
