    Re: FSW Impressions...

Ok, I'm still going through the tutorial. It sure helps getting used to the controls, as each button can be used for multiple things in some cases. The tutorial is pretty simple, you've got a guy walking you through every scenario you may face on the battlefield. I can't imagine how tough it'll be when I don't have someone telling me what buttons to press. I'm up to the war games tutorial, which I think is the last stage. I had one of my members killed by a tank. I placed my alpha squad behind a wood blockade and that tank shredded it with gunfire. As I was running for cover behind a corner, one of my men was killed. I now have to start the war games over again.

The game is more involved that I thought it would be. You don't pull the trigger but you tell your team when to. If your me are under fire and are not secure, they will automatically return fire. You do aim and fire the grenade launcher as well as toss grenades.

Control between both squads is very easy to pick up. I'm going to get back to this tutorial so I can actually see what it's like out on the battlefield.

Any more impressions yet? I'd like to hear more about it before purchasing the game now that Gamespot has apparently taken the opposite view of FSW, giving it a 7.7 compared to the other two solid reviews.

            Re: FSW Impressions...

I am currently at the last excersize of the tutorial.

The game is hard if you play stupid. You can't just run from point to point and expect not to get mowed down.

You have to cover each other and you have to stay in cover.

The training mission is a combat excersize, and it's tough. I opted to play on the tougher of the two difficulty levels, and I've gotten killed a few times so far. I haven't beaten the mission yet, and I have to go out soon, so I will do it when I get back later tonight.

The game is great, as long as you aren't expecting a FPS. The tutorial is required, and it's a good thing, because the controls work well, but you have to learn them completely or you may get killed as a result of doing the wrong thing.

For instance, in one portion of the training excersize I had my guys run to a location assuming the area was clear. As they neared the corner, an enemy rounded the courner and popped me; mission failed. Had I opted to move with caution and cover (forget name of this off-hand), I may have still been killed, but my soldiers would have at least shot back instead of run headlong into the enemys gun.

You have to use strategy, period. Even on the training missing.. There are a few different ways you can tackle the opposition.. Different streets, alleys, or a combination of both.

Suppression fire works well, but don't have your other team run in front of it. Trust me on this one.

Graphics are very good. I have no complaints, and the atmosphere, player models, and effects are all superb. When the troops talk, their mouth moves, and there are lots of great one liners and responses to being in combat. It's very realistic.

If you want a strategy game, are willing to take your time, and not rush through levels gung-ho, you will enjoy the game immensely.

I played SOCOM Navy Seals 2 and enjoyed moving the "other" troops around, setting ambushes and such for the enemy, instead of shooting them myself. FSW allows you to do that all the time, and I enjoy it a lot.

It's a tough game. Granted, I'm playing on the tougher difficulty level, but I spent a good hour plus on the training tutorial, and I still have to beat the last portion of it.. So I am not really worried about playing time anymore, which is good.

Honestly, I thought this game would be a breeze for some reason. I mean you can control where the soldiers go, who they shoot, and when they shoot. How can that be a challenge? It is, trust me.

You have to take your time, and use strategy. You have to go slowly and cover each other. And you also have to make decisions about when to use grenades, suppression fire (burns ammo), or both.

My impressions don't really focus on the game, it's graphics and the sound, because that is all solid. The thing that stands out for my in this game is that you have to be smart, and you can't screw around and get away with it. The graphics, sound, and atmosphere work superbly, and therefore they don't stand out. Instead the game as a whole does, and my initial impressions are that it's a very good game.

One bit of advice. When you think you have cleared an area, and that you have a care free passage to the extraction zone/level end, think again. It's very realistic in that you don't know what to expect, and if you don't prepare, you will get your [censored] handed to you.

It's a good thing, and makes for a challenging game, which I enjoy. Because if you die, it's because you were careless/stupid, and not beaten unfairly by the AI.

Good game, I'm glad I got it over Riddick, even though I haven't played that..

This game fills a niche that not many other games can. Thankfully, it does a good job and is incredibly fun, but also difficult.

Regarding the playing time.. I'm guessing the IGN guys and others that said it was 10-12 hours either rushed through, or died until they found patterns and ways to beat it quickly. I spent quite a bite of time (1-2 hours) on the training/tutorial, and I still have the last portion to complete.

If you have questions, I can answer them, but I don't really want to spoil things for those that don't have their hands on the game yet.

Thanks for the deep impressions Grondar. Is there any system link capabilities with this title?
EA and 2k have the unfortunate task of trying to balance on a tightrope of fun and sim while trying not to fall 10,000 feet to their death. Instead of a safety net waiting down below there will just be angry customers quick to move out of the way and talk of their failure.

I have to agree with everything Grondar said, this game is fantastic!! I played Riddick for about 20 minutes, then decided to pop this in, 1 1/2 hours later, I can't put it down. It's that good!
