Re: Overwatch
So I just played for two hours. I joined up with Fearme and he was able to answer some of my noob questions and show me the ropes a little bit.
It is clear to me in each match that there are people who have played the game before and people who haven't. You can definitely tell.
Some initial first impressions:
Game looks really good. Borderline great graphics, definitely good/very good graphics
Game runs great. Smooth as hell, ultra responsive controls, I never noticed frame rate dips at all
Game sounds great, no complaints there
It is very hectic and fast paced for me. It's only 6 on 6 but with the all the powers/abilities going on it was hard for me to keep up, especially in the beginning. It seems to me like getting familiar with all the heroes so you know exactly what your strengths and weaknesses are as well as your teammates, on top of knowing what to expect from each enemy hero you engage with. This is my main struggle at the moment. Reading about your heroes abilities is one thing but actually utilizing them effectively is another.
Teamwork is essential. We played against a couple tight knit group of guys who I assume who were partied up and they just rolled everyone. Our team was mostly being going free for all and it just isn't gonna work. Classes play a big role
The heroes are all unique and very cool. I really enjoyed all the ones I tried and still have many I haven't used yet. There seems to be quite a solid balance as well. I don't think I can say a hero was OP or anything like that, I could just tell that the person on the sticks was skilled
I had a lot of fun. The game is clearly very fun. I am not sure I am ready to pay full price for it though. I am not, as of writing this, convinced this is a game I will play regularly for a long time. Don't get me wrong, my experience so far was very positive, but personally I am not sold on the staying power of it quite yet. The upgrade/loot seems to be all cosmetic/vanity type stuff."Successful people do not celebrate in the adversity or misfortune of others."

They want this to be the TF-2 of E-Sports. TF-2 (while great) struggles with that due to the modifiers in it.
Also your impressions make me even madder that my preorder messed up....

Re: Overwatch
Looks fun in streams. Curious to try it out myself. If I end up getting it, it will probably be on PC. It's a Blizzard game. Updates will be faster and the community is guaranteed to be there for the long haul. Shame the $40 version isn't being offered on console too.
And thank goodness. I'm tired of weapon, perks, and other gameplay related unlock nonsense in shooters.Go Noles!!! >>----->Comment

Re: Overwatch
Hey Jare when you get back on you should try the weekly brawl it picks random characters for everyone and once you die it gives you another one. Pretty fun. I already knew a little bit coming into this open beta since I played the pc closed beta briefly. I love it, although it would be great to play with a group of people who have mics. Also learning the maps will be key

Re: Overwatch
Fear, that weekly brawl sounds pretty cool. As for playing with a full group I agree. I feel mic communication could be a key to success in this one for the coordination alone. I know that 4-5 guys I run games with regularly are planning on getting in on the open beta so hopefully we can all team up
Some more thoughts that ran through my head after I had stopped playing and thought about the experience a little
I found myself playing as if I was just playing team deathmatch, and I realize now that is probably why I was so ineffective. I very rarely used an "assault" character, and even when I was a healer or support I was just trying to kill guys instead of A.)focusing on the map objective and B.) focusing on my role.
One of my most effective matches was when I was a healer, I think the name is Lucio, dude who has the constant player based-AOE heal/speed boost on, and instead of trying to focus on killing people I was sticking to my teammates and trying to time my heal-boost ability and shield ultimate when we needed it. We lost the match but it was a close fight and my overall stats (not kill death, but everything else like healing) got me the post match reward thing. That was cool. I like that about these types of games, just like TF2. It is a role-based, class-based, objective based team shooter. Not team deathmatch massacre, per se.
Another of my best performances was when I used the dude with the bow and arrow who can climb walls (pretty cool) and would stay back and try to pick guys off or disrupt groups with the AOE arrow ricochet ability he has. His super is pretty nice too.
Fear, I agree, knowing the maps seems to be pretty key as well as I had no idea where I was going half the time and enemies would flank me so easily.
I hope all of my buddies like this game. It definitely isn't a "move the stick and press R2" type of skill shooter, the powers and abilities based on the role of your character influence your play style heavily, or at least they should if you want to be successful.

Yeah, I can't argue that loot wise it's probably a good thing. I know a lot of people get turned off from trying a shooter that has been out awhile knowing they will be playing against people who are more powerful than they are from the get go.
I'm not sure how valid this is but I was asking some people about getting this on PC vs PS4 with the only deciding factor being player base/longevity and the input I was given was to go with the PS4 version because there is "less competition" which will create "more longevity."
I guess I am a little snakebit still from Evolve and worry about dumping money into a game I won't touch after a few days.
One of the main reasons I was inclined to go with this game over Battleborn or Paragon (although I will most likely buy one of those games even if I buy this one because I loved the MOBA and RPG elements of those kind of games)
EDIT:
What all is in the retail version that isn't in the beta? Or is the beta more or less the whole game?Last edited by The JareBear; 05-03-2016, 04:06 AM."Successful people do not celebrate in the adversity or misfortune of others."

Re: Overwatch
I'm actually enjoying the healer heroes quite a bit now. I would dabble with medic in TF2 but can see myself going healer more often here. My next best characters are probably the mech tank (D.Va I think?) and bow and arrow guy
The dude with the huge hammer seems cool I want to practice with him more."Successful people do not celebrate in the adversity or misfortune of others."

Re: Overwatch
D.Va is correct Haha...Hanzo has the bow, Reinhardt has the shield and hammer. Main healers are Lucio answer Mercy. I prefer lucio just because like you said he has the AOE heal. Mercys resurrection can be key though.

If the 40 dollar version was on console the game would probably be an instant Day 1 no brainer for me.

It's going to be big on PC for sure. It's where the majority of Blizzard fans reside and word or mouth from the closed betas has been very positive. Console only players thoughts coming out of the open beta should give a clearer picture on its prospects there. I'm always worried for multiplayer only games outside of the known quantities in have lasting communities. The colorful and cartoony art style, a heavy team and objective based oriented multiplayer only game, 21 heroes, 12 maps, and 4 modes with the only option being the $60 version on console, may hurt it with some people. The good news is, maps, modes, and new heroes will be free.
For me, it was the more MOBA-like aspects of Battleborn that completely turned me off and that's a game I would really worry about its staying power. Like, I see little excitement surrounding that game for any platform. 12K peak players on Steam for what's supposed to be a big new release, is really low.
The open beta includes all launch content and features.Go Noles!!! >>----->Comment

Re: Overwatch
Controls are not complicated, using your abilities may be somewhat complicated but activating them is simple. Standard R2 to shoot, powers mapped to L1 and R1, etc"Successful people do not celebrate in the adversity or misfortune of others."

Re: Overwatch
Anyone playing on PC?
Joined the beta last night when the servers launched just after 7. I didn't log off until 12:30....
Game is a lot of fun.
I love that it's fast paced. I enjoyed games like PS2 Socom and other more realistic shooters, but my favorite franchise was always Unreal. This plays similar in that everything is really fast.
The characters truly are unique and all play differently. Even characters within the same arche type have wildly different abilities and strategies required to play them. I think this will help replayibility too. If you get bored with a character there are plenty of options, and you probably won't be spending too many games as that character anyway. There were only a handful of games I played where I stuck with my starting class (partially do to wanting to change it up, but mostly because I would need to change my strategy a couple of times throughout a match as the opposing team changes theirs)
Teamwork with complimenting classes is key. If you run off on your own you will get ganked and your team probably won't win. If you try to have a full team of offensive powerhouses that can kill then you are going to get countered hard when the opposing team has just a couple of support classes.
I foresee a lot of crying about various classes. For the most part I felt the game was well balanced. I would not mind seeing a few small tweaks to a few classes, but I did not feel that any particular class was vastly OP or overtly weak. The only thing OP in this game is a solid group of players who fill out a team with appropriate classes.Last edited by KSUowls; 05-03-2016, 05:46 PM.Comment

The only hero I consistently saw dominating was Bastion

Re: Overwatch
Overwatch Drops Competitive Mode for Launch, "Redesigned" Version Coming Later
Overwatch game director Jeff Kaplan has confirmed that the soon-to-launch shooter will not ship with a competitive mode. Kaplan said in the game's forums that, after considering fan feedback from the closed beta, it was decided that the mode would not make it into the open beta or the full release's launch, though it's expected to come later.
"We worked extremely hard to get competitive play in the game for closed beta," Kaplan said. "We've been reading feedback from the community and taking it all to heart. As a result, we've temporarily disabled competitive play for open beta so that we can rework the system and make it better."
Kaplan explained that Blizzard hopes to launch a "redesigned" version of competitive play sometime after Overwatch releases in full on May 24. He did not provide any details on the updated version, nor did he offer any kind of window for its release. Kaplan ended his statement by thanking fans for their feedback and patience as Blizzard continues to work on the game.
Overwatch's competitive play option was added to the game in early April. In the mode, available at level 25, players could "rank up" through a series of divisions and tiers in month-long seasons.Go Noles!!! >>----->Comment
