Not going to mention MGSV since I obviously haven't played it yet and won't until after Mad Max but The Witcher III definitely raised the bar in regards to side content but only because of the stories attached to them. The objectives were still the same, hack and slash enemies and/or use your Witcher senses.

To be perfectly honest and this includes Ubisoft games which are some of my favorites but EVERY open world game becomes repetitive. It simply comes down to whether or not you're enjoying what you're doing over and over to keep doing it.

Mad Max looks exactly like the kind of game that im not going to get bored or tired of simply because it looks so much fun to play that even if im doing the same thing over and over, im still having a blast so why stop?

Tonight can't go fast enough. LOL.
I agree, but having the stories attached to them is what makes them feel special and not just copy and pasted objectives all over the map.

I enjoy taking over outposts in Far Cry because the stealth/action gameplay is at its best doing that. The other hostage rescue, package delivery, bomb defusal missions just feel lifeless after a few because you are doing the same thing over and over, with no real payoff other than some unlockables. If there's meaningful story content attached to those missions it makes it more likely I'll complete them since the developer put some effort into it and didn't just put 15 of the same mission on different parts of the map.

Also if I never have to scale another tower to unlock more of the map, it couldn't come soon enough.

The word repetitive is being thrown around alot across the Internet with Mad Max. I completely agree with you on open world games and being repetitive. I think most games are repetitive.

Witcher 3 is one of my favorite games of all time, but extremely repetitive.

As much as I love just about every Final Fantasy since SNES, its Town, World Map, Dungeon, Next Town (upgrade gear), next dungeon (where you fight 4 or 5 different enemies until you encounter a boss that has an attack pattern)...Repeat

GTA V was an awesome game, but could be classified as repetitive. Drive, Cut-seen, Drive, Shoot, Lower Wanted Level.

Super Mario...go left to right, jump on stuff, next level.

I love all of the above games and franchises. It's about a game just being fun, engaging story, maybe being atmospheric. It's about the experience. Something you can lose yourself in. I just found out about Mad Max last week, watched a few videos and pre ordered. Looks fun to me. I think some gamers need to remember that reviews are the opinion of one person (although bad scores across the board can be telling).

So many get wrapped up in the score and not the content of the review. I stopped reading most reviews to experience everything fresh. I liked that I did not even know about half of what was going to be in Witcher 3 before I played it. I also stopped because it started to skew my experience based on what others said. If I do read a professional review, it is typically Kotaku since they don't do the score thing and just recommend buying it vs passing.

I am psyched to play Mad Max and form my own opinion.

If you want to boil it down to simple generalizations, sure, every game is repetitive. Whether or not you enjoy the loop of a game is down to each individual, but some absolutely do a better job of masking and providing more variety within their loops than others.

            Re: Mad Max

It unlocked on Steam a hour early, so I got to play it about right when I got home from work.

My anticipation grew more as I played, at first I was like, ah okay only a few things to upgrade and a few varieties, but as the game expanded and the amount of things you can alter grew, the options improved.

While I'm still early, I haven't explored much because I feel a little overwhelmed and most of the baddies either are too strong or outrun my car.

I can say that this game is a pleasant suprise. I picked it up because an offer came around for it to be $20, which I couldn't pass up, it was on my maybe list and I'm glad to have gotten a chance early on. I'm picking up MGS from BB tomorrow (later today?) and I have 4 of the next five days off which is going to give me a better chance to give a quick review.

I still feel I'm really early in this game and I'm soaking up the story since I'm new to the Mad Max franchise entirely. Thus far, I'd say it's worth a purchase, especially so if you liked Arkham Knight (Or Shadow of Mordor), it utilizes vehicular combat and an extremely similar combat system. I'd probably liken it more so towards the later, and my experience has definitely been positive thus far.

I don't know how much play time ill get tomorrow between the things I have to do and MGS, but once I get more PT, I'll have a more solid opinion.

              Re: Mad Max

I did the same thing. I saw the PC version on sale for $20 so I decided to give it a shot. The last WB game on PC was terrible (Batman), but for $20, I'll take the risk.

I've only played for an hour or so, but this game is completely different from Batman. The game runs smooth. I can actually turn the settings way up and not struggle with the frame rate. I'm getting a solid 60fps without any issues. As I progress I'll post some more thoughts on the PC build.

Where Mad Max comes into its own is out on the open road. Avalanche proved with the playgrounds of Just Cause that it excels at dizzying scale, a feeling that's been buffed by the picturesque expanses of Mad Max's wastelands, where detail and scope combine to create a real sense of dry-throated atmosphere. Dust devils whirl across dunes and sand sweeps across tired asphalt, while the skyboxes sell the post-apocalyptic drama better than any other element, from their milky blue beauty through to more menacing hues.

It's the storms that come rolling in across Mad Max's wastelands that are its trump card. Walls of angry cloud creep up on the player - echoing one of Fury Road's most stirring set-pieces - consuming them in dervishes of lightning strikes and flying debris. If you're in a camp you're enshrouded by a moody hostility, while if you're out in the open world you're unable to step out of your car, lest you be torn to shreds by the thundering chaos. This is Mad Max at its best: a world of twisted metal and sudden violence that's there to be survived rather than conquered.
When Mad Max brings all of its best elements together, it's brilliant. Scan the horizons and spot the plume of dust that's the telltale sign of a convoy passing through, then open up that breathy V8 to gobble up the scenery that's between you. Get in the fray and feel where the influence of Miller's kinetic action has rubbed off as cars tear themselves to shreds while you're taking potshots at fuel-tanks with a sawn-off shotgun. The choreographed ballet of the films might be lost in all that noise - as too is some of that original Ballardian subtext - but the energy and the spectacle remains intact.

Take all that away, and you're left with a rote open-world game that's not without its problems. Objectives soon repeat themselves a little too often, while oversights remain in much of the design: despite being a car combat game, there's no handbrake and no way to get the cars spinning on their axis in true Hollywood fashion, while the combat feels too scrappy for its own good. The sense of being a scavenger can become overwhelming, too, when progression grinds to a halt and you're left patrolling the wastelands searching for scraps.

That ties neatly into the harsh world of Mad Max, though, as does the slightly cultish feel of a game whose rough edges might scare some people away. You'll have played other, better examples of the genre, and you've likely been a tourist to the post-apocalypse a few too many times before, yet Avalanche wears the fiction so well it's hard not to be charmed by this brutal, beautiful open world.

Almost five hours and four story missions in, im obviously enjoying the game very much. Max himself could control a little tighter and a few other little nitpicks but the game is damn good. Just finished eating dinner and going back to play.

Little advice - turn off tutorials in the options menus. It lessens the constant controller configuration pop-ups. This helps a lot.

                        This game... I'm in love.

I can of course understand it has its flaws, but for a site to give this a 5/10 (Polygon) is absolutely ridiculous. That indicates a damn near broken product. NOTHING about this is a 5/10. Nothing.

OK, what am I missing here? The game keeps telling me my digital content has been downloaded and to "exit to the main menu to activate". I exit the game and go to the main menu and I don't see anywhere that offers the option to use the additional digital add-on content.

Same here. I'm in Australia and got the PS4 version that gave me two redeemable codes to unlock stuff but I can't find where that stuff is. It doesn't show up in Max's inventory or in the garage.

That aside this game is brilliant. Have been waiting since it was first announced that it was in production. Had a real Mad Max 2 and Fury Road feel to it. The sound is excellently done from the score to the differing noise of the vehicles in the wastelands. The roar of the Magnum Opus when you get in and start her up never gets old.

Exploration is addictive as is hunting for scrap metal. The melee gameplay is really tight. This brings me to salute the physics at play in the game. Movement has a natural weight to it. From the way cars handle when driving to pulling things down with the harpoon to moving around on foot and fighting. All so well done.

This game has that 'I'll just do this one more little task before I turn it off' thing about it. Thoroughly enjoying what the devs have provided us with the Mad Max world they envisaged and created.
