Quirky, bordering on ignorant AI, extremely odd day to night transitions, inconsistent texture quality throughout the game, wonky physics engine at times. These are just a few of the issues I've experienced. I have not experienced any freezes so far. The game has serious potential in my opinion. I think they released this game too early and it could have used a longer development cycle. Luckily I Redboxed a copy of this yet I'm still on the fence on a purchase as the story and voice acting is top notch. I'm holding out hope they can patch some of these issues away.

Re: Mafia 3
I'm not sure what it is, but I'm still enjoying the game. I know the combat is pedestrian and the clearing/assigning of districts is repetitive, but the story and characters just keep me pushing forward.
It also helps that the main story missions when you take out a boss are done very well. The settings and layouts for those missions have all be great so far.
There are more fun games and I doubt I play through again anytime soon, but I really like this game at the moment.

I can ignore a lot of things (Good post NINJA) but the idiotic AI for me was the worst. I play all my games on normal since I am not looking for the hardest challenge, but the AI is the worst.Comment

Re: Mafia 3
Yeah, this game doesn't just have "typical iffy open world AI". I'm afraid to say it's much worse than that. It's not so bad when you're actually in a firefight. It's everything before and after being in combat that sticks out like a sore thumb.
My favorite is how they search one-by-one to your hiding spot after the combat is down and they return to search mode. Sweet strategy, guys. Just keep sending guys to that corner where no one returns. Also, don't worry about keeping a lookout. Just go one-by-one.
Another is whistling always only attracting one guy. That just makes whistling totally OP.Comment

The sad thing is this happened on the Hard setting with aim assist off(I'd recommend anyone playing this game to play with these settings for the most challenge(?) possible). A.I. probably is the games biggest problem. If H13 could find a remedy for that

I don't think they will dedicate the necessary resources to do that since it's released.

Re: Mafia 3
Not sure Kid. That may be a complicated issue that can't be easily fixed. I kind of put it in the same boat as 2k17: If you know what is an overwhelmingly aggravating issue with your game such as body proportions(2k) or A.I. (MAFIA3) with your consumers you should make it a priority to deal with those issues ASAP (if possible). I am no game developer but I'm guessing fixing 2k's issue might prove easier than tackling Mafia's.EA and 2k have the unfortunate task of trying to balance on a tightrope of fun and sim while trying not to fall 10,000 feet to their death. Re: Mafia 3
I did the Riverboat/Lou Marcano takedown last night. I wish the level was longer because the setting was great.
So far I have taken over every district apart from the bayous (not sure if he can take those over), Frisco Fields, and South Downs. I'm trying to keep things even and basically just dish out the rackets closest to whomever boss is headquartered (ie: Barclay Mill went to Cassandra, Downtown went to Vito, and the Harbor and French Ward went to Burke). I've been clearing every stash, informant, enforcer, etc for each racket.
Apart from the initial runs for each boss I haven't done any additional trafficking runs since assigning new districts so my earn isn't maxed out yet.
I think I'm getting to the stage where I'm just plowing through everything until the end or start rotating this with another game.
Everything about the main story and its missions are great. The settings for the boss kills are fantastic and varied with a level of detail that brings each location to life. Even though the bosses/capos each only see a short amount of screen time they're all acted superbly and gives each one a distinct personality. The side stuff could have taken a "less is more" approach, however. Then again if the world felt lived in that could have made a difference too. I don't need to visit clothes shops, have a HQ to customize, or have cars to garage - but sometimes I feel like Lincoln Clay is running around this map and the only other inhabitants are the goons he's putting down.
The NPCs are inconsequential even when they cry and run towards a phone to call 911. The police are only a problem when I'm either not paying attention or just want to **** with them - much like the countless goons you run into. Sure, the game progresses in difficulty as you go up the ladder, but this is merely a by product of placing more baddies in smaller, more confined spaces. The bigger, more open warehouses and docks are still walks in the park when going silent. Still, the combat itself manages to be pleasant and entertaining most times. I suppose if I didn't take the time to collect every item or clear every racket 100% with no breaks between combat it could become tedious.
The world itself is great despite some weird lighting every now and then (that has seemed to level off with one of the post-release patches I'm assuming) and the settings you come across are all great and genuinely interesting. Some areas handle their NPCs better than others. The French Ward is fantastic all around and is easily the best district on the map, but each district has something unique to offer and gives the whole map character and personality.
Coming off of 100+hours with The Witcher 3 I can't help but to compare to its fantastic and nearly flawless open world. The Witcher is a rare exception to the open world/sandbox with an abundance of interesting characters that rival the major players of the game. Mafia 3 is not a rarity unfortunately. It blends in with so many other open world games that offer little apart from a fantastic map and wonderful main story. As a basis I think its strong and I hope Hangar 13 is left to handle the next installment. You can see the potential of the game around each corner. The attention to small details such as the plastic-glare of a convertible's rear window or static coming in across the radio as you drive through the tunnel is wonderful. Its limitations are frustrating and limit a wonderful game to just being good overall and adequate in some important gameplay areas.
This is not a purchase I regret and I will surely beat this game within the next week or so. As great as the world is I doubt I will feel a need to return to it once Clay's story is over.
-----
After playing The Witcher I was wanting to experience another rich open world. My thirst wasn't quenched with this game unfortunately. I'm wondering if I should finally go through GTAV/Online or wait for Watch Dogs 2.

Re: Mafia 3
2K HQ was very keen on relocating staff to the more expensive Novato office to add to their 150+ person strong “Hanger 13” studio. Hanger 13 spent many years and many 10s of millions of dollars creating “Mafia III” which has recently tanked in reviews and has no hope of ever making its money back (it needs to sell ~8 million full price units to make up for its expenses, it has so far sold well under 1 million units).Comment

Re: Mafia 3
Mafia III was awesome in the first five hours that I played the game for. I traded it in (but will get it back in December or January) because of the beyond horrible AI, the horrible lighting and various bugs/glitches even though I didn't experience any of this except for the horrible AI. Mafia III needed another six months to a year but it's not a surprise because this gen has seen more games being released at least six months too early.
I still have the season pass (I bought the deluxe edition) and im mainly waiting to see if Hangar 13 patches the problems mentioned earlier because I do think that the expansions will be good as long as they don't release with the same problems as the base game.
Either way, it's a huge shame because 2K clearly screwed up and when you have one studio develop parts of the game while another studio comes in to finish it up, it's almost a guarantee that the game will turn out to not be what it should be.
Story, characters and story telling wise, game is easily a 9+. Music, sound and voice acting is the same. It's the repetitive nature of the open world genre, horrible AI, bad lighting, bugs/glitches and just core gameplay that isn't good.
Really hoping that they can patch up the game to where it will then be worth buying again (even at $60) playing through to the end and that the expansions rejuvenate interest in the game.Comment

Re: Mafia 3
Finished the game a couple of days ago and really enjoyed it although the last 5 hours I did just do mainly story missions as the repetitious side quests got old.
After playing this for around 30 hours I went into GTA V because I never finished that game and boy I wish GTA V controlled like Mafia 3. From the combat to the driving Mafia 3 felt great, the cover system worked almost all the time and I never got frustrated. Trying to control GTA's characters felt so sluggish that I really never feel in control of my character.XBL: Countach
