As amazing as the story, cut scenes, and soundtrack are, the AI is as equally as bad. It's a shame. I still really enjoyed the game and think New Bordeaux is one of my favorite maps in a game.
Just received this an early xmas present.

I've read and heard a lot of negative things surrounding this game, but I'm enjoying the first couple hours so far, maybe that will wear off as the game gets more repetitive.

Soundtrack has the potential to be my favorite ever in a video game.

I'm about halfway through playing on Hard and the AI seems fine for me, but keep in mind I was never versed on the problems with the AI before the patch. So grains of salt and all that.

Really enjoying it so far, storytelling is top notch, soundtrack is even better. Will definitely play through again to grab that relatively straightforward platinum.

Man oh Man, I wasted my money. I don't know how their isn't the option for manual saves. You die, you have to start back at the last check point.

Does anyone else just love the hit squad? Sometimes I'll come up on a situation, say **** this, and then call up my goons to help me clear things out. That's such a cool option.

Just stared playing this game today and am enjoying it so far but I literally just completed the opening sequence and that's it. I have seen the questionable AI which is unfortunate but the story is really well laid out to start and the cinematics are top notch, really enjoying it early on.

                  imo..not much improvement(xbox One)
EA and 2k have the unfortunate task of trying to balance on a tightrope of fun and sim while trying not to fall 10,000 feet to their death. Instead of a safety net waiting down below there will just be angry customers quick to move out of the way and talk of their failure.

I agree. I'm on PS4 pro and it looks a lil better in certain areas but still not that much of a difference.

                      Re: Mafia 3

Finished Mafia III last night and well, it's my new 2016 game of the year replacing Gears of War 4. 100% completion. There's no play time tracker in the game which was disappointing but I would say that completing the game 100% took me at least 80 hours. Overall, a 9/10 for me personally.

Visuals are good. On PS4 PRO, I believe the game is running in 1440p if I remember correctly. Game looks great all things considered. You do have some graphical glitches and of course, pop in. It does take away from the visuals at times but not to where you want to stop playing or think that the game looks bad. The character animations are good but in certain situations, the enemies will end up in "locked" positions when you kill them. For example, I threw a molotov towards three enemies who were sitting around a round table playing cards or whatever and they burned to death but get "locked" in weird positions due to how they die. Weird but funny as hell sometimes. Love the atmosphere, immersion, setting and locale. New Orleans looks beautiful in the game and the different districts all have their own unique look and flavor. Love the rain and the puddles in the streets actually have accurate reflections. Too bad the car rear view mirror couldn't do the same but I understand why.

Music, sound and voice acting are all top notch. Don't know if it won or not but the soundtrack should have easily won the "of the year" award because it's by far the best soundtrack that I have heard in all of 2016 and considering all the licensed music in the game, it's not a surprise. Sound effects are all good. Nothing special but not bad or anything either. Voice acting is excellent from every character and really adds into the story.

Speaking of the story and characters, simply wow!!! Yeah, it's a revenge story but man, is it so much deeper than that. Like the soundtrack, the story and characters should have won this category in 2016 as nothing else comes close in my opinion. The way the story is told via a senate hearing is so very well done. Everything in this category is easily a 10/10. I could say so much more but honestly, it's better to experience it as you're playing the game yourself. Different endings are in the game based on how you handle the underbosses and will say that I got the "good" ending and I enjoyed it. Watched the others on youtube afterwards and they are also good. Be sure to watch the credits because there's an story related clip in between which is good. I missed a little of it and had to youtube it. I wasn't happy that I missed that but it was on me. Bottom line, the story and characters were simply the best of 2016 in my opinion. On a related note, I loved the Lincoln Clay character. No nonsense, serious, im going to kill everyone attitude. Perfectly fits in with the story and prologue. I'm Italian and playing as Lincoln, I wanted to kill every motherchucker on my path of deadly revenge. HAHAHA.

Gameplay wise is where a few of the problems occur. The AI is bad and dumb not that it's surprising as this is a consistent problem in the majority of open world games. You can easily spam the whistle in cover. LOL. Also, the detection isn't that good either. I played on hard with aim assist off. The enemies can kill you quicker though on hard as a few close hits with a shotgun can definitely kill you quickly. Basically, the AI does more damage to make up for the lack of intelligence and awareness. With that said, the stealth kills are brutal as are the executions and shooting an enemy with a shotgun and see them go flying back five feet is so damn satisfying.

Open world wise, Mafia III is a Ubisoft style game which for those who don't know, I love and prefer over open world games like GTA or Batman Arkham where the setup is different. I love being able to take over district by district while getting all the collectables in the process. For each district, there's basically a set amount of money that the different rackets are earning and you simply go around destroying everything and everyone in your way in order to decrease those rackets earnings. Once you get it down to zero, you can then assign the racket to one of your underbosses. There's two different rackets in each district such as drugs, sex, etc. After you decrease the earnings to both rackets in the district, the "boss" will appear for that district and once you eliminate him, you then assign the entire district to an underboss. If you assign both rackets to say Burke but then assign the district to Vito, Vito will control it all. Basically, controlling the district overrules control of the rackets.

I never did that. I had my setup of what I wanted to do and whichever district I was going to assign to an underboss, I also gave that underboss the rackets as well. Don't know if anything story/gameplay wise happens differently when doing this but I do know that if you don't keep the districts even between the underbosses, they will turn on you which is definitely pretty cool but I had everyone even since this is how I wanted to finish the game.

The driving on simulation was okay. Steering at times was a pain but it's passable. The rear view mirror is horribly glitched and there should have been an option to turn it off/remove it. If you flip your car or go in water while still inside the car, you can't get out and will eventually die and respawn. This is definitely stupid but once I learned this the hard way, I simply avoided doing this again.

There's no traffic laws whatsoever which is disappointing but considering that there's no fast travel system in the game, I can see why they made that decision. Still, a bad decision nevertheless. Only time the cops will come after you is if they see you hit someone or shoot/kill someone or if it's a preset during a mission.

I personally loved the gameplay loop and the Ubisoft style. If you don't like this then I suggest sticking to the main story and go from there. You can also unlock upgrades for the cars in general and for Lincoln. Basic, typical stuff but it's tied to the underboss Cassandra for the most part. This definitely adds to the game in my opinion because if you favor one over the other, it can hurt you in some aspects of the game.

Despite the flaws and negatives of the gameplay, I still completely enjoyed it especially since the last open world game I played was The Division last March so after playing linear games or first person shooters since then, I very much enjoyed Mafia III.

A few other tidbits.....the rain was awesome in the game as was all the wet street effects and puddles. Looked good especially with accurate reflections in them. I know a lot of people complained about the sky and whatnot when the game launched. I didn't notice any problems or weird stuff outside of the preset/predetermined weather/time during story missions. It could be sunny and if the story mission is meant to be played at night, it will simply change over in a flash. Some may not like this but it didn't bother me as it was preset for a reason which was the story.

Played on PS4 PRO and had no crashes or freezes whatsoever. Outside of the normal clipping and items being stuck in mid air, the only glitch I had was a boat that was under a boardwalk for a side mission. Thankfully, going to another location with a boat, I was able to complete the side mission without any problems.

Overall, Mafia III was crapped by critics and gamers for the same generic formulaic setup that every open world game has. My problem with this is simple - the so called great games like Batman Arkham Knight, MGSV, Fallout 4 and even The Witcher III suffer from the same exact problems but yet, get a free pass by the majority and just like I'll stand by Mad Max, I will do the same here for one important reason -

If you're going to bash an open world game for this setup/problems, etc. nothing wrong with that as long as you're going to do the same with all the other open world games. As someone who played 70 hours of MGSV, completed Batman Arkham Knight in around 50 with everything completed except for that Riddler garbage and other games, this simply pisses me off because it's simply not a fair opinion.

I do favor Ubisoft style open world games but there's plenty of them that do the same in various ways yet get a free pass and im sorry but that's bullcrap. Considering the story, characters, locale, soundtrack, gameplay loop, etc. that Mafia III has over the majority of those other games, I will definitely stand by and stand up for Mafia III every time.

On a side note...I still have the season pass and the game. Will hold onto the game until the season pass stories (there will be three different ones) get released and I will play through them as well. Per a 2K rep on the Mafia III OT at NeoGaf, this info is said to be announced soon so im hoping it is by month's end.

Sorry about the rant but seeing fun and awesome games like Mad Max and Mafia III get crapped on when so many other games do the same exact crap pisses me off to no end. Either bash them all or give them all a free pass.

Tips in regards to what though? The game auto saves a lot so even if you die, you won't lose more than maybe a few minutes of progress, if that.

Just remember killing all these guys in the swamps, then died, only to have to go back and kill them all again. It was frustrating.

Think of it as a failed mission. Few if any games allow you to continue where you left off if it's a story/side mission. Use stealth. Use the whistle in cover and isolate enemies one by one. If you're getting overwhelmed or outnumbered then run. LOL. Because you will die on hard.
