I can't be completely helpful because I also lost, granted a step later, but in hilarious and true RDR2 fashion...

I see the guy on my radar, I ride up to him, and dismount. I've got just my Cattleman Revolver on me. I don't think to take a repeater or shotgun off since I'm just going to talk to this gentleman. I figure if he tries anything my revolver will be enough to put him down. Then we get into the bottle shootout and I win. Then we go for double-or-nothing shooting birds. Since I don't have a rifle, and can't go back to my horse to get it, I can't hit a damn thing with my crappy revolver. He wins, brags, then says maybe we'll run into each other later.

It was frustrating but I guess I need to go Rambo-style every time I get off my horse and bring every weapon imaginable.

As with RDR, this game gets so much better when you've unlocked the paint/target version of Dead Eye. The animations and kills when you can target body parts are fantastic. I'm thrilled Rockstar let us unlock it so early in this game compared to RDR.



One thing that is increasingly getting on my nerves is the shooting mechanics while on horseback. Why does holding LT just bring up an icon telling you to hold RT to aim? I really wish LT would pull your gun and aim like in RDR. The whole mixing of LT and RT when on horseback vs not is confusing the hell out of me when I have to make a split-second reaction when I get ambushed on horseback. I've had numerous occasions where I've tried to shoot back and pressed LT and I ride around like an idiot without a weapon drawn.









It's not just age; a ton of people on Reddit have been talking about how confused and overwhelmed they are. There are massive threads over there with tips and explanations. I think a lot of people were expecting RDR Part 2 but we got RDR the Quasi-RPG instead. There is so much information to take in and the tutorials could be much better. Myself and my two friends who bought the game (mid/late 30s) were all confused at the beginning. One of my friends rage-quit a few times. It probably took 15 hours of playtime (maybe more? I still don't know how to check) and getting towards the end of Chapter 2 before I felt pretty comfortable.



I will say that there's a ton of stuff you can ignore. You don't need to craft stuff, for example. At least I haven't found the need to yet. You don't have to upgrade various things at camp. It may make the game easier but it's not required. You don't need to customize your guns or change your outfit all that often (just keep a winter outfit stored on your horse for cold-weather missions). Food/tonics/etc is plentiful so worrying about your Cores isn't a big deal once you get going.

Agree. I'm mid forties and it's not over whelming at all but the help menus are but good. For example, check out the combat section. There is no mention on how melee combat works.

The game is still at a different level than anything before it and it's not close

Is there any way to just unholster your revolver and aim it without having to press L1 to bring up the wheel and then use R1 to pick your weapon? I hate having to bring up the wheel and having to choose a gun every time I need to have a gun! Am I doing something wrong?

To any of you "older" gamers (I'm 46) - do you really feel like you want to enjoy this game BUT you also feel like you're totally overwhelmed and it's more intimidating than it is fun?...

Just asking for impressions --- that's where I am right now.

someone a few pages back posted this video and it helped me understand the basics of the butcher at the camp

I really wish they could tinker with the logic in this game a bit for the next patch. If someone in town starts something with you, you select "defuse" and they just keep at you and eventually start SHOOTING AT YOU, you should be allowed to defend yourself without getting in trouble for it. I mean, people witnessed that happening and still decide to sell YOU out!

I’m always underweight. Doesn’t seem to impact much. I eat stew and various other things and I can’t get above underweight.

I was in the same boat. I dont feel any real affects of being underweight, though. The saloons serve fried meals and stuff. I eat those and shower and sleep. It got my weight back up. I didn't realize that not sleeping was literally killing me.

In my experience, i've yet to reach a mission that introduced me to a fence, but went to St. Denis and a fence was located on the Map that I could go to and buy/sell items including my gold bars. I know you do unlock one closer to your camp at some point, but I think if you just go to St. Denis its available immediately.

It's basically a pawn shop.
