I honestly regret purchasing RDR2 and I don't feel like that very often. It's a very good game on a technical level, but it's boring. That's not to say that there aren't fun moments weaved throughout the game, but the grind to get to those moments just doesn't feel worth it at all. If all I wanted to do was to fish and look at pretty landscapes, this would probably be one of my favorite games of all time, but that's not what I want.

As a narrative, the way the story is put together doesn't do anything for me. There's too much conversation between characters that I care nothing about -- including the protagonist. The combat itself isn't really all that great either, at least not enough for that alone to keep my interest. I have a digital copy, so I'm sure I'll complete the game eventually, but I can definitely understand why someone wouldn't enjoy RDR2.

It doesn't have to be a matter of someone being a "kid" or having a short attention span, or whatever. It's possible for someone just to not like this game and that's okay.
I think having too much to do and no order to do it in makes it hard for some people. For me I never really had that much fun playing. I finally got to saint denis and put the game down and haven't played since. The wonky controls and everything being so slow at times get annoying. Too much miro micro managing to do to really enjoy the game imo.

Not to break up all the negativity here but I had absolute blast playing it and it beat my big expectations. The only major gripe I had was I wish it would have been easier to get perfect pelts. I usually have short attention spans with games and the setting and story always keep my attention as it was a little at a time. It took me a while to finish it because I went slow on purpose and didn’t want it to end. It’s definitely one of my fav games of all time.

        Re: Red Dead Redemption 2

RdR is one of, if not my GOAT.

RdR 2 has been a great experience for me. I've been taking my time doing a little bit of everything. The game looks great, even on my OG Xbox 1 and 1080p TV. I'm enjoying the story, regardless of any shortcomings or slow-downs. I haven't been disappointed nor have I been overly gushing in amazement.

The best thing about the game could be it's biggest downfall: depending who you are and what you want/expect out of a game, the massivness could be good or bad. It's wide open nature with so much to do can be overwhelming. Personally, I only hunt as long as I feel compelled to. I only fish until I am bored. I only meander about the world randomly until I don't want to anymore. And I only play mission's until I feel the need to change it up. Truth is I can only take short, 1-2 hour sessions before I need to put it down, but that's not a bad thing IMO.

I play a few times a month, on weekends in between dad-duty, and I get the enjoyment I expect out of the game. I don't have any idea when I'll complete the story, it could be months from now and I am perfectly fine with that. For me, if I tried to rush this game or play it everyday and complete every challenge etc, I would almost definitely get burnt out like some of you have said.

There are certainly two sides of the coin on this game (every game, really), and I understand the wide range of view points. Could be the greatest game ever, a boring chore or anything and everything in between.

I wonder how many people who didn't finish it never figured out you could put your horse on auto-pilot and make those long rides a little more bearable.

Holding down the A button in Cinematic Mode for 8-10 minutes was less appealing to me.

It also makes the ride longer since your horse moves at a more leisurely pace in Cinematic Mode, unless I've been doing it wrong. Plus your horse stays on the beaten path so it will take longer; taking shortcuts across a prairie can save a ton of time not to mention that's how you run into random areas and structures, which is one of the best aspects of the game.

You don't have to hold the button down the whole time. You hold it down for a few seconds and that's it.

I figured that out accidentally one day lol.

If you just hold the button, yes the horse goes at a leisurely trot. If you tap to get it up to full speed then hold the button for a couple of seconds and let off, your horse will continue at full gallop.

                Re: Red Dead Redemption 2

I had no idea there was such a wide swath of folks who didn't like this game. This has been one of the most fantastic gaming experiences of my lifetime, if not the best. I'm midway through my second playthrough and I'm still in frequent amazement and contentment on a daily basis. I have considered that perhaps I am too easy to please.

That said, I can understand most of the criticisms and complaints mentioned here, even if they don't apply to me.

                1. The Pace: I love the slower pace - to where it's almost meditative at times. On occasion, I derive joy from literally just walking along the sidewalks of Saint Denis. I find the world so rich, so alive, so real, that it's often soothing to take my time and just soak it all in.

That said, there have absolutely been times where riding my horse from one place to another has been a chore, particularly if I'm in task mode instead of "enjoy" mode. It's not altogether different from those times in GTA where I'm in a rush to get from the Redwoods back to LA instead of enjoying the PCH.

                2. The RPG Elements: I was overwhelmed a few hours into the game. On one hand I was being completely blown away by everything but on the other I felt strangely exhausted. I think it's because I didn't know how to juggle and perform all the new elements of the game. After a while, auto-pilot hit and everything became smoother, especially once I realized that doing these things on a daily basis was 100 percent not critical. If my health hits a rut, a two-second LB-Right Stick to feed Arthur a can of beans on the go fixes things up.

That said, I could 100 percent see how this could be seen as nothing more than an annoyance. Even in my case I'm not sure how much I'd miss certain elements if they were gone (say, brushing the horse). I not-so-secretly kind of like that all those options are there though.

                3. Enormous Size of the Map: I don't know if this is a huge issue with people but I guess it could tie into the boredom. But the size of the map is one of the game's primary highlights for me. In real life I am enamored with North America's beauty - I'm big on hiking, roadtrips, random explorations, mountain climbing, etc. So having the ability to travel to and explore so many different American ecosystems, and being able to bask in their splendor through RDR 2, has almost been worth the price of admission for me on its own. Yellowstone-esque hot springs, Rocky Mountains with incredible snow physics, the Louisiana swamps, Appalachian vistas... it's all gold to me.

As a bonus, a lot of those areas feature Easter Egg-like discoveries and/or mysteries. I've never felt more rewarded in a video game for merely exploring an area I found interesting in the first place. I love the idea of checking behind a waterfall—because, hey, maybe there could be something there—and being rewarded with an underground cave system.

                4. Clunky Controls: Nothing to really counter here. It's easy for me to imagine a smoother system but it just hasn't really negatively affected my experience. I could see how it could for others though.

Altogether, the game just feels too epic. It brings an era to life that I'm particularly interested in and at times, it often feels like I'm getting a chance to live through it.

Yeah the game never really stuck for me, pretty easy victim for gaming ADD. It's relatively dead on Twitch and hasn't really had the stayng power of other Rockstar titles.

Haven't played the game (currently setup to be my June or July game) yet but im the opposite of Gerg04 when he says that he can only play for a two hour or so session at a time. For me, if im off from work and take breaks during the game to go online or I just can't keep playing for hours on end, that tells me the game won't last long at all. If im into a game and enjoying it, I just want to keep playing. LOL.

I'll see which way it goes for me when I finally play the game.

It's hard to explain from my perspective. I truly enjoy the game and the story, and it honestly may very well end up right next to RdR IMO as the best. And even though I said I haven't been completely blown away, the game really is amazing on many levels.

But for whatever reason anywhere between the 1 to 2 hour mark is the max I can go in one sitting. I am ok with that, though, as I just move on to other stuff, gaming or otherwise. I don't look at it like a bad thing at all. My gaming habits also gravitate towards multiplayer/competitive games, so I'm sure that's part of it.

If you're someone who can sit down all day on one game, and have any affection for R* games you're in for a treat. Believe me, if I could, I'd get absolutely lost in this game for hours on end because the probabilities for it are endless.

I don't expect most or maybe anyone here to read the whole piece(It's literally a 10 page essay), and the people who love the game will disagree with most of what is written in it, but I think this encapsulates all the reasons why someone might not enjoy this game.

Only thing I agreed with from that article is that Rockstar needs to do more work making their AI more difficult. Other than that a lot of his complaints came off as someone looking for things to complain about. Again, it's weird how people feel they need to justify why they don't enjoy this game as much as others. If you don't like it then you don't like it. To put that much effort into an article to show why you dislike so much about the game is just silly and it was hard to take serious at times.

I love the game. It isn't perfect. I know some things like the pace of the game or the micro-managing are not for everyone and it will turn some people off, that's just a part of gaming. There is no perfect game that will satisfy everyone. If he can put this much effort into complaining about the majority of things he did then I don't doubt he could also write a 30 page article about the shortcomings of The Last of Us or Mass Effect or any other game. If anything, by the end of that article I took the author a lot less serious than I did when I first clicked the link.

I did get a laugh about him trying to spin the fact that he had a twitter poll 3 weeks after release and over a quarter of the voters were still in the first couple of chapters and the majority of voters were still in the first 3 chapters. If anything, if people are still playing the game and enjoying it and are that early in the game then they are apparently finding plenty to do and enjoy. I don't know why any "critic" would try and spin that as a negative and say the game gave the player too much to do or was too overwhelming.

Regardless, he and I obviously have differing opinions on the game and that is nothing crazy. No game is perfect. He had some legitimate complaints, but like I said, for the most part that article came off like someone having to search for things to complain about and it really was hard to take serious by the end.

Hated the game when I first played it. Hated it even more after moving into other games. Wasn’t until then did I fully realize just how boring an experience RDR2 truly was.

I have some very strong concerns over the rumored Bully sequel after GTAV and RDR2. Both of which were extremely underwhelming in my eyes.

Sounds like you might just be over rockstar. If you didn’t like those 2 games I’m pretty confident in saying you won’t like anything they put out moving forward.
