    Re: Nioh

I wish there was something that told you how many times you've died. I picked this up knowing I get frustrated with dieing in games. I'm still on the first level and have died countless times. Alot of times its me being careless. I keep coming back to it though..I wonder how close I am to the first boss...I recently found the second alter if that means anything

      Re: Nioh

I only played one Demon/Dark Souls game, it was Dark Souls II. I probably lasted about 7 hours before quitting and trading it in.

I played Bloodborne for about 22 hours. I loved that game up until the last 7 hours, which were all spent entirely on one boss that I just could not beat. I watched videos, read guides, I was ridiculously over-leveled by the end, and I still couldn't get past it no matter what. I still own the game but haven't touched it since then. Maybe I need to go back to it.

On Friday I picked up Nioh and have already logged about 24 hours into it, and no sign of slowing down. I love it. Someone on NeoGAF said it perfectly, this game is "Bloodborne combined with Ninja Gaiden." It's just awesome. I love the inventory management, love the blacksmith and the economy. Loot is great, character development is great. Story is, well, honestly I really don't understand who anyone is or why anything is happening, but that's fine.

Will you die playing this game? Yes, but I think the difficulty is much more fair and reasonable than in Souls/Bloodborne. I highly recommend this game. Action mode is super crisp at near constant 60 FPS. One of the few games I go with FPS over resolution on my Pro.

In my humble opinion this is one of the best games so far this gen.

Edit: I still find myself wanting to mash buttons and don't manage my Ki very well sometimes. I really need to work on that.

Got the game last night, and played through the opening + the first main and side mission. Died a lot (especially to the huge Yokai enemies) but I did manage to kill the boss on my first try.

There's a depth to this combat that the souls games don't have, with the different stances and quick "stamina" recovery mechanic. Makes it feel like a fresh experience.

Did I miss a character customization aspect somewhere or is the main character's appearance always the same?

There's no customization in this one.

Getting what feels like and according to the guides I've been following close to the end. Just had a huge "anime ***" anime style boss fight last night. It was pretty sweet.

I am enjoying this game but can feel myself being almost done with it and wanting to move on. It's a gift and a curse this spring is so packed with games.

Yeah when you are at the blacksmith you can pay to get a haircut and a shave but you do have to unlock it first.

Love the fact that although they made the game hard they also gave us impatient people who sometimes have issues with these bosses an easy way to just move on.

Yeah I use help sometimes too. What's fun is that after you level up some more you can go back and beat them on your own for satisfaction. Also, helping others beat levels is terrific fun and on the higher levels you can find some great gear.

Later on when you open the Hidden Tea House you can take on the appearance of different characters you encounter throughout the game. That's kinda cool.

Just some thoughts on the combat so far:

I need to use my living weapon WAY more often. I always end up dying without even bringing it out, often against one-time enemies that won't respawn after I reach a checkpoint. Such a waste.

I'm getting the hang of the stances and switching between them (Ki Pulse mechanic is awesome), but right now I'm not really seeing the downside to being in high stance. One of the death screens said mid is supposed to be be more useful for blocking, but when I block with high I seem to take the same amount of Ki damage. The only difference I can see is that holding block in mid while moving recovers stamina, and high/low does not. Not sure that's enough of a downside to justify switching when Ki recovers quickly by letting off block, even in high. Also, I use Dual Swords as a main so my attacks come out pretty fast even with high stance, and they do so much more damage.

I see a parry rating, but it's not like Souls parrying - it's simply the amount of Ki damage you take when blocking? Do I have that right? And the attacker Break/defender Toughness seems to be closer to the "Poise" mechanic in Souls?
