Re: The official "OS Occupation" Thread.

What a lucky guy.I just quit a teaching job here in South East Asia. There's tonnes of jobs around and my Mrs works at a major hospital...so there was no real reason to keep doing it for a while.

I just woke up the other day and thought "I want to get really fit".

So, rather than work, I am now going to the gym for a few hours every morning. I am doing half an hour on the treadmill, hour on the bikes, weights and swimming.

It beats the crap out of working and I REALLY envy athletes who get paid to do this sort of thing. I feel so much better physically already. Seriously, i can't even imagine getting paid to do this. Pro sports guys have GOT IT MADE

 Afternoons are spent reading...

Figure I'll do this for 3 months and then take a 12 month contract somewhere. Comment

Re: The official "OS Occupation" Thread.

I worked at Kroger for about 2 weeks in the summer and quit. Getting paid $6 an hour just isn't worth it.Originally posted by BlzerLet me assure you that I am a huge proponent of size, and it greatly matters. Don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)Comment

Re: The official "OS Occupation" Thread.

The benefits are good but actually doing the work sucks. I couldn't stand being in that hot *** warehouse sorting packages for hours and only getting one 10 minute break in the first hour.Where I work you get up to $23k for school. For hourlies you get $3000/year and for management you get $4000/year.

Doesn't matter how long you've been working there. I know that the "Earn and Learn" program differs from place to place but that's how it works where I'm at.

Oh yeah, and you may say that UPS sucks but paying $49 a month for health, vision, prescription and dental is pretty damn good.Originally posted by BlzerLet me assure you that I am a huge proponent of size, and it greatly matters. Don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise.

Re: The official "OS Occupation" Thread.

It really depends on what state you live in. I pay about $90 a month for my health coverage, and it's cheap compared to what some others are paying in Mass.Comment

Re: The official "OS Occupation" Thread.

The amounts you guys are talking about for health insurance is not very high.
In New York...the amount for the family plan can be downright staggering.
Since I'm a member of the Uniform Service of the City of New York for the past 16 years, I haven't had to pay for my health insurance since then...but before that...it was incredibly high /per month.
 Count yourselves lucky.

Re: The official "OS Occupation" Thread.

I have all you guys beat as far as health coverage is concerned. I pay over $500 a month for my wife and I to be covered under our health insurance at my current place of employment. It's absolutely ridiculous. We had a much sweeter deal before this new company came in and bought us. Of course, the old company was CBS, and as you can imagine, they could afford to give us cheaper insurance options.Comment

Re: The official "OS Occupation" Thread.

Yeah that makes sense. I figure part of it is where one lives, part is company etc... I know other employees in my current company that work in San Jose; Portland, OR; Austin and other places across the US pay a nice penny for coverage.

I'm just happy to pay the little I have to pay! Lets me add more to the 401K, money market and Roth IRA's that I have. Retiring early is the key! Last edited by mjb2124; 04-09-2007, 11:07 AM. Last edited by mjb2124; 04-09-2007, 11:07 AM.Comment

Re: The official "OS Occupation" Thread.

From reading some of the remarks in this thread some people need to be reminded that how much you EARN compared to how much it COSTS to live where you are is more important than how much you make.

For instance...Bk lives in one of the most expensive places in the country to simply exist. Therefore...a large six figure income might not be as comparable as someone who has less than 2000 dollars in monthly bills and makes 80,000 to 100,000 a year.

I have a cousin who graduated from Bama and moved to Washington DC to work for a very presitigous Interior Design Company. Her rent for her 900 square foot apartment is MORE than my mortgage on a 2000 square feet, 3 bedroom home on a golf course.
