I don’t think that was ever the case in the US. You could pay for Office when you got your laptop, or could pay extra for it to be preinstalled, or the store might throw it in as an incentive to buy with them. But it was never like Internet Explorer where it was just there. They did used to have Works I guess which was like a stripped down version.

The way I've always seen it, when you buy a computer you enter the serial number (or might have been a product id) underneath your laptop to activate a full subscription for Microsoft office.

I've ended up just getting WPS instead, but I definitely would've preferred having a free desktop version of office instead of relying on an alternative.

How is WPS? As far as alternatives go I've only tried OpenOffice and LibreOffice.

I'm sure there will be a hack for that pretty quickly, fortunately.

              Twitter as a news source.

Also, not something that bothers me as much as I just don’t get it, when people post “has anyone seen/read/played _____?” and just leave it there. It’s like asking “can I ask you a question?” What are you, taking a census? What do you want to know, skip the foolery.

I watch a YouTuber named John Campea who talks movie/TV/streaming news (he is lightly tapped into the film industry himself), and he responds to Super Chats as well with what sometimes seems like a fanbase of pretty dense individuals.

Anyway, sometimes they'll posit "what if?" questions without a follow-up, and he calls them out on it saying that would then be that and there isn't anything else for him to add if they don't narrow the focus of the hypothetical situation (like what kind of response they actually want from him).

                They may ask questions like:

"John, what if Lightyear made $100 million on opening weekend instead of $50 million?"
"John, what if the Oscars had 10 Best Picture movie nomination slots in 2008 instead of only 5?"
"John, what if J.J. Abrams directed a Transformers movie?"
"John, what if COVID never shut down movie theaters?"

He'll always respond the same way, kind of with a: "Yeah, and? What if that? What do you want me to say about it? Then I guess that would have happened. What do you want to know? You need to ask me something about that situation."

I need to find an example of one when he calls somebody out on it, but I'm on his side of the "what if?" bit not being enough information for a targeted response.

It does the job. I've never used it for PowerPoint, but in terms if basic document and spreadsheet stuff it's done its job. Don't know how different it is from word when it comes to the more technical things, but I've never needed it for that anyways.

Never heard of WPS...do you mean TPS?

I hear those TPS reports are a bear.

                          Prius drivers;

I'm begging you. For the love of all that is good and decent. STOP DRIVING 5-10 MILES UNDER THE SPEED LIMIT!

Or just get the * out of the way!

Word Perfect Suite? I used to use Word Perfect until I started graduate school and everyone was using MS Office software for everything so I switched to Word.

Not sure what TPS reports are, but it reminds me of this scripted dialogue between 2 scientists at the beginning of Black Mesa (Remake of Half-Life).
