    Moving to Texas

Well for the second time in the last year I will be officially calling a new place home. Just found out today that I got the promotion I interviewed for and will be moving to Dallas/Fort Worth. A little nervous as I have never been to the Lone Star State but I've heard a few rumors that if you're not originally from Texas people make it pretty hard on you down there. And I don't think I'll blend in very well with my Michigan accent.

Anyway if any Texans in the DFW area or Texas in general can give me any advice it will be greatly appreciated.

      Thanks.

Very nervous about going down there. Kinda of feels like I'm about to move to another country. And I'm a damn long way from Wrigley.

          I have no idea.

I'll know in about a week. An agency handles all relocations within my Company. So basically they do all the work for me all I have to do is drive down there. Its pretty cool because it takes away all the hassle of moving and stuff. Also I will have to train whoever gets my job before I go down there as well.

So I should be really busy for the next month or so.

Yeah I'm sure I'm just working myself up. I thought Louisville was gonna be bad when I first moved down here but I have really liked it here and kind of sad about leaving.

I guess its just knowing how far I will be from my family and friends will be the worse thing. Louisville wasn't that bad because I could be home in 4.50 hours but Texas is a little bit farther South.

The good thing about it is I'll actually have some co-workers I know down there as opposed to up here being a Sales Rep and basically knowing nobody when I first came.

                Lucky lucky man.

I'm a native Texan stuck up here in Wisconsin so I've lived half my life down south and half my life up north. And I'd move back down south in a heart beat if I could.

If you've never spent a lot of time down in Texas you'll find out a lot of things really quickly.
                • You'll learn how to use the word y'all very quickly. Before you know it you'll start using it without even knowing it.
                • You're going to learn a new kind of 'hot' weather. You think you've been in 'hot' weather before but you haven't. You A/C unit will become your life line and you'll forget what a heater is used for.
                • You can go ahead a leave your snow shovel at your current residence when you move. You won't need it. Dallas gets one snow/sleet day every winter and the city basically shuts down.
                • The people down south are overly nice, something I don't find too often here in the badger state.
                • Sports are everywhere, especially in DFW. Dallas Stars, Dallas Cowboys, Texas Rangers, and the Dallas Mavericks. There's also arena football, indy wrestling, whatever you desire.
                • If you think Chi Chi's is good mexican/tex mex food then you have no idea what you have in store for yourself. Frijoles over by Six Flags is the first place my wife and I go when we go back home to visit my family. Colter's BBQ, Sonic, Whataburger, Black Eye Pea, just too many to list. There's alot of good food in DFW that I just can't get here up north.

I could just keep going here but I wish I were in your shoes. And if you're a baseball fan do yourself a favor and go see a Rangers game at Ameriquest Field; it's a beautiful field. They might not field a great team but you'll get used to that.

Life is a sport, so play hard!

I guess you give Texas a big thumbs up. The sports scene in that area is something that really excites me. Never lived in a city with sports teams (lived fairly close to Detroit most of my life but never been a fan of any Detroit teams besides the Red Wings and of course Michigan Football). ... I'm really down on the way the Bengals and Knicks are being ran currently. So maybe since I will be moving to the area, I might just jump on the Cowboys and Mavs bandwagons.

I don't ever think I could get use to using the word y'all though.

That is the strangest thing i've ever heard. In fact, everyone I know who has lived in Texas and then go to another state say that Texas are one of the most friendly people ever. Of course I am biased.

Not sure where you are moving from but you may be a little taken back at how big the D/FW area will be. In the north the citys build up, in Texas they just grow out. It is extremely spread out here.

                          Re: Moving to Texas

I've actually been trying to convince my parents to move my family out of LA to the Dallas area. Our business crapped out here, we're having a hard time with the plastic "LA" mentality, it costs too much to live here, and we have two little ones and we're worried about their education. We also definitely don't agree with the politics and values of the city. We also like cooler, rainy weather during the winter months. We've dealt with immense heat though living in Fresno for so long, where temps in the summer would routinely get over 105.

We pay $3200 a month for a house in a nice area but that is a piece of crap house. It's breaking down and its just not worth living here.

We don't have anything tying us down here except family, and I don't think thats as legitimate a reason considering a lot of our family is also OUTSIDE of the LA area as well.

I've been pushing for the Frisco/McKinney/Plano-level areas in the Dallas area because you can get an amazing house down there for 1500-2000 a month.

Not to hijack the thread of course because the info I'm asking for is also beneficial to ZitoMulder. I was down in Dallas for 2 weeks back in 1998 when I was 10 and absolutely loved it. The quality of people there seemed to be almost too good to be true. Everyone was so nice and accomodating. The area was spread out and clean and the food was delicious. There was also no lack of things to do.

My question to you guys is, what is there that a family looking to move out of the LA area to possibly the Dallas area would need to know? How are the safety and schools in the areas I've mentioned? Are there other nice neighborhoods besides Frisco/Plano/McKinney? We're worried about safety and quality of living first. How is traffic down there? Can't be as bad as LA, can it? Is it easy to get places? What about getting to Downtown Dallas from a suburb?

There are a lot of things I'd be interested in and I'm sure ZitoMulder would love any impressions you guys can give as well.

been in Texas 30 years of my life, and 27 of them in Dallas, no problems.

don't know what b.s. rumors you've heard to make you worry, but life is good. Cost of living is cheaper and you can pretty much get anything done here.

only fault with Texas is the women in some areas are beautiful trash! meaning all the fine ones are either gold diggers or hoes! lose lose situation. You have to go to areas like Grapevine, Lewisville and Plano to get a good one!

And for advice coming from a brotha! Don't move to oak cliff or south Dallas and you'll be good!
