as far as gas is concerned...the more refineries there are, the more supply there is

but a refinery hasnt been built in this country since the late 70s and we arent going to build any more. They are not environmentally friendly.

New Refineries would definitely help as the efficiency, cost, and waste would be increased from new machines and processes.

the "whole thing" is not because of OPEC....OPEC is acting like they always do. There are a lot of other factors that lead to OPEC being such a major factor.

we need to reduce our dependence on foreign oil (at least reduce it moreso than it is currently). We need to produce more here (but while being as environmentally responsible as possible). If we produced more here, OPEC wouldnt be as much of a factor (although they will always be a factor, we will always use foreign oil, because we dont want to tap our US supply faster than we need to).

OPEC controls a lot more than you think. OPEC doesn't have to offer every company/country oil at the same price. If the US starts producing a lot more oil or try to hurt OPEC's power, OPEC can simply raise the price for the US. OPEC has enough supply to control the world market, directly or indirectly. Unless you are ready to get all your oil from some where else, you cannot mess with OPEC.

Another thing is that the move toward other types of gases, has other consequences. Food prices are going up now because the US farmers are not growing for food, but for gas. Why would you sell your crops for food if you could get maybe 150% or more selling the same exact thing for gas.

it would increase supply...but it isnt going to happen. We are not going to build any new refineries (and for good reason)

good points on OPEC imo. They have the power.....however, OPEC is not new, and neither is the way they do things. It has been this way with them for quite a long time. That really hasnt changed.

OPEC is pretty much doing things the way they always have. It's just that now, a lot of other dynamics are changing and adding to the OPEC problem imo. There are quite a lot of factors contributing to the rising costs as well as OPEC.

btw, i wonder how much cheaper the price would become instantly if oil futures trading on the stock market was eliminated (not realistic at all, I know. It will never happen. Im talking hypothetically)....and futures trading is just one of a crapload of factors contributing imo...but i imagine the price would decrease quite a bit if oil futures trading was eliminated (although the price would still remain high)

What would be the purpose of putting our effort into a monstrosity of a financial project to build new refineries and drills in the U.S. when

*It sidetracks our effort to create efficient, renewable, inexpensive energy

It makes no sense on ANY level to invest in more oil infrastructure. That money needs to go towards ethanol, hydrogen, etc.

you are absolutely right imo...We should not build any more refineries, and we are NOT going to. There hasnt been one built in this country since the late 70s....Like has been said, they are not environmentally friendly.

and like has been said, we do need to find other sources of energy obviously...again, oil is not a renewable resource so necessity will become the mother of invention eventually. There is not an unlimited supply of oil, although our generation wont have to worry about it (our grandkids wont appreciate it though).

Finding alternate energy sources is easier said than done though obviously.

And from what I've gathered corn ethanol fuel, which is becoming popular in the Midwest, takes about as much oil to produce as the fuel it creates. So basically you are back at square one while price of the corn used for food is driven up.

Ethanol produced from sugar cane, such as in Brazil, yields eight units of fuel for every 1 unit of oil used. Using the 1 to 1 ratio in corn makes no sense at all except for the farmers, who would now be getting more money for their crops.

It is $3.55 a gallon around here.

To throw my 2 cents into the mix. I have a problem paying this much for gas when the oil companies are reporting record profits every quarter and every year. With the amount of profit they are making they could drop the gallon a gas $1.00 a gallon and still be making money. It becomes how much money is enough? A big part of the whole problem is corporate greed.

I filled up yesterday for $3.79 9/10, but during Spring Break when I was home, I saw a Shell station whose 87 octane was $4.17!

even though oil is at 115 a barrel the big companies only pay about $5 a barrel for it. Whats funny is we have just as much oil and gas being supplied and stockpiled as we had 10 years ago. The difference it the third world countries exposure to oil and that is causing the increas demand. Also corporate greed, but if I was in the industry I would love it. In 1998-1999 when I worked as a broker oild was trading from 12-26 a barrel. Gas was like .99 to 1.19. The government still imposed the same high tax back then as they do now. We only have ourselves to blame for buying a bunch of gas guzzling vehicles. Although we should all blame Rockefeller, in the early 1900's the first auto's where made to run on alcohol, but he had a such a huge stake in oil he pursuaded everyone to go that route and look where we are at today. The solution will not be cheaper gas, but to provide more efficient vehicles that get 50-100 mpg. It's a shame I remember my first vehicle was an 88 S10. It got like 26mpg, and it would cost like 10 bucks to fill up. I could put $2 and fo all week in highschool.

Corn ethanol's positive is mostly found in the environment effect, nothing more. Switchgrass or sugar cane ethanol is much more efficient. Unfortunately the corn-producing states are holding back initiatives to produce different types of ethanol.
