    And I never understand the percentage of tipping. I've said it before, but why do we tip more based on the price of the meal?

    If I spend $50 on a meal or $20? The waiter probably did the same amount of work, so why should I tip more on the $50 meal?

      I think the reason we tipped based on the price of the meal is that normally more money = more food which then = more work bringing out the food.

      Let's say for instance, if your out on a date. That's only 2 plates per course, where as if you had a family of 5. That's 5 plates per course. So there's more work to be done. Not to mention there's more of a possibility of extra requests during the meal (More refills on drinks, condiments, or other small requests)

      Now with the subject of tipping, I want to ask everyone a question..

      Who tips or gives gifts to their garbage men/mail man during holidays?

      I never understood this, but I've seen or heard people doing it. I know that garbage men make alot of money, and even though it's a disgusting job, if they don't like it they can find a different job. I've never done it, but I feel like sometimes the garbage men give me dirty looks for not giving them a Christmas gift.

          I already gave the perfect example of how that is often not true. Same restaurant, same service, one person ordering. You get a $12 hamburger and fries or a $25 steak and potato. Server brings out one plate for each, yet some how earns twice as much. I could go get a lobster and steak and spend as much as a whole family might if they got kid's meals and a special.

                they are taxed on their total sales. My wife sold close to $2000 on father's day in sales

                  Which is part of the problem. The government assumes if they sell X they receive Y% of that.

                    I was actually thinking this the Friday night when my wife and went out to eat and I accidentally ordered a $48 Porter House. We had an appetizer, one drink each and dessert and our bill was $111. We were there for over an hour, but that was because the kitchen was slow getting the food out.

                    I've been to much less expensive restaurants and kept the waiters/waitresses busier and was there longer than I did last Friday night. However, since my bill wasn't as much there, then they didn't get as big of a tip as the waitress who did less in less time. It's a weird system, but I still tip my 20-25% unless the service is absolutely terrible.

                      Yeah honestly the percentage thing really gets me too, even as a waiter myself. My sales don't impact what I'm taxed its a flat rate. If anything the shift I work changes it, but not even sure about that.

                      As I said earlier I'm not big on fancy expensive restaurants so I haven't encountered any situations where my bill was, say, 200$ for two people, so I haven't been in a situation as such.

                      I think you should tip according to service, not cost. We leave 20$ at our sushi spot because its all you can eat and they consistently bring food to you, not because it necessarily costs more.

                      When people come into my work for example, I don't really put any expectation on them as it compares to their bill. Roughly I hope/expect 5$ per person, which is how I typically tip myself. If they (or I, when I go out) are being a little needy, or get extras (lots of appetizers, a million refills) id bump that number up some.

                      I just don't understand the idea of tipping more simply because the food costs more. I'm not really enamored with the idea of fine dining though, especially considering out here there are soooo many well priced options for good food. If I were to try it, maybe I'd understand better.

                        We automatically tip out our bartenders and hosts/bussers based on total sales, so higher bill = higher amount of the tip from that table going to other people.

                          I consider total service more than total sales. If I (or the group) is making them work harder, like constant trips between the table and bar vs just refilling a couple waters, I'll tip a higher percentage.

                            I never really pay attention to percentages.

                            What I don't like is when the tip is automatically calculated into my check.

                            My friends and I can be difficult sometimes, so I try my best to compensate the waiter or waitress for their trouble, as long as they are nice about it.

                            If It's just me and the girl, I still tip pretty well.

                            I went out with her family once for her sister's graduation and her mom was being a realllllll bitch about having to wait an extra few minutes for something. I kept thinking, "My god woman, we have 20 people here and they assigned one waitress to us. It's not her fault". I felt bad for the girl so I threw her a decent tip even though the parents covered my food.

                            So, to sum up my post, I agree about tipping based on service rather than percentages.

                              I just don't understand the point of tipping. I'd rather pay more for my meal then to tip. Other countries don't tip and some think its an insult. America just needs to catch up.

                                And until America does catch up, if you don't want to tip...don't come out to eat and waste our time as servers. Get takeout or cook yourself, please.
