Do you have any respect for any pro league commish?
Goodell, Selig, Stern, Bettman. Are any of them worth more than used toilet paper? I swear I want to launch a foot @ their rear end everytime I read a quote or see their picture.-August 17, 1960Originally posted by VP Richard M. Thanks, dookies!Tags: None -

Im pretty impressed with Goodell so far. I like how he is cleaning up the league and not taking much crap from anyone. Stern i was fairly high on until all this referee stuff (the gambling and horrible officiating). Selig and Bettman are a joke.Check out my Tampa Bay Buccaneers CFM Thread.
You too can be a 5* recruit at FSU.......

I believe all of them at least deserve a little respect.
I mean, sure they make some bonehead decisions, but they got to their respective positions for a reason and they deal with a lot more responsibility than I'd ever like to have.Comment

Goodell, I believe, is probably the best. Bettman, I believe, is probably the worst. Selig and Stern have these serious issues (steroids and game fixing) to deal with, so they've fallen out of favor recently. I'm starting to gain a little respect for Selig though. It seemed like he was taking the hit for a lot of baseball's problems and then all the sudden I haven't heard anyone take any shots at him the last few years.NHL - Philadelphia Flyers
NFL - Buffalo Bills
MLB - Cincinnati Reds

I like what Goodell is doing. Selig has also done some great things for the game, namely interleague play and the wildcard.Comment

ditto.
I know its the style to rage against the machine, but I actually respect what these guys do and am convinced thier not secretly trying to destroy thier respective leagues like some...Comment

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

Selig takes more heat than he deserves.
But they all generally suck.Green Bay Packers | Milwaukee Brewers | Bradley Braves | Wisconsin Badgers

Re: Do you have any respect for any pro league commish?
I love what Goodell is doing. I don't really care about the NBA or NHL really. But Bud Selig is doing all he can to ruin baseball. Sure, the wildcard was a great idea, but that started thirteen years ago. Interleague play was an awful idea and is cheapening the game. (I'll elaborate my position on this if anyone wants me to, which I'm sure they will.)
Look I know that it all comes down to the almighty dollar, but baseball is different than every other sport. Baseball is our pasttime. It can't be on the cutting edge of innovation. That's not a good thing for baseball.
Certain accomodations can be made (such as the wildcard for a quick-growing league) but, in general, a Cubs-Cardinals game today should be as similar as possible to a Cubs-Cardinals game from fifty or even one hundred years ago. (And there should never, ever be a Cardinals-Royals or Cubs-White Sox series outside of the Fall Classic.)Comment

To each his own, but I love interleague play. Yeah you get some lame matchups, but I like the local series. Cleveland-Cincinnati. Milwaukee-Minnesota. Oakland-LA.
You still play half your games against the division. I just like to play somebody different once in while.Comment

Re: Do you have any respect for any pro league commish?
It's not really about the lame matchups for me. Royals-Rangers is just as boring as Royals-Giants. I think the only reason interleague ever started was the $$$ for the reasons you just said. The Chicago teams facing off, or the New York or L.A. teams playing each other, was just too much money for MLB to pass up on. My major beef against it is that the NL and the AL don't play the same game with the DH discrepancy. I think it's special that the only time an NL team ever has a DH, or an AL team's pitcher has to hit, is in the World Series. To each his own, but I love interleague play. Because if you think about it, all 162 regular season games are the way for each league to determine its representatives to the playoffs. When you make teams play outside of their league it just cheapens the regular season and can allow a team to sneak in more easily.
I don't think there is much of a reason for teams to play more teams either, because even in the AL you're playing thirteen different teams all season. That's more variety than NFL teams.
But once again that's just me.Comment

Re: Do you have any respect for any pro league commish?
A 162 game season is by far the least "cheap" of professional sports.
Yeah interleague play brings money, and that means the fans like it. When you have good ideas and improve the game, the money follows. I dont know why people get in some hissy fit and think that a business trying to make money has to correlate with screwing the consumer and low quality. Its the exact opposite.Comment

Re: Do you have any respect for any pro league commish?
What if Goodell came up with this great idea: He'd have the Bears play one game a season against the Chicago Rush of the AFL, using AFL rules. The game would count for the Bears' regular season NFL record for trying to make the playoffs, too! Because the fans in Chicago were willing to pay a lot of money to watch, that must mean it's a good idea and improves the game, right?A 162 game season is by far the least "cheap" of professional sports.

Maybe I'm just idealistic, but I wish baseball wasn't just about the money, like everything else. I always thought baseball would be the last sport to "sell out".Comment
