Thunderstorms/possible tornadoes today. Sub-freezing temperatures pretty much all next week.

Similar here, eh. 60-80% chance of rain over the next 36 hours followed by low temps of around 14F. Folks in the south already struggle to drive coherently, why not add some ice on the roads to cull the herd a little.Comment

Re: So what's the weather like where you live?
This week been a blizzard and artic freeze. Really our first heavy amount of snow for the season and this state so wasn't ready. They didn't even plow the roads until 8pm on Tuesday night when the blizzard came that day. Yesterday and today we are back in the 20s for the high, after having most of the week in the single digits as a high and -20 as a low.Comment

Been floating between the Teens and low 30s in Atlanta but this time next week, it’s supposed be 60s and 70s.#RespectTheCultureComment

Re: So what's the weather like where you live?
It's gotten this cold before here, I just don't ever remember it being this cold for this long.
Down into single digits Tuesday and Wednesday. And pushing that again over the weekend. Everything is pretty much shut down. I'm used to getting takeout on the weekends - especially for NFL playoff games - so it's going to suck eating microwave dinners while watching this weekend.
Pipes froze Tuesday, but a plumber came out to get them thawed Wednesday. Fortunately, no leaks. Always thought you only had to drip the cold lines, but you're supposed to drip or stream the hot lines too. My utility, water and gas bills next month aren't going to be pretty. I'll still take this over those 100-degree (plus insane humidity) days in July and August though.
And then yeah, end of next week we'll be pushing 70. Crazy.Comment

Re: So what's the weather like where you live?
Today is the last real cold day for winter...hopefully.
Projections the next 2 weeks just show basically similar weather as what we saw in late December.
If winters are like this, I'm fine with that, but sadly this winter is probably a rare occurrence, and February could easily be bad.Comment

Re: So what's the weather like where you live?
Annnnnd we're back in the 60s, and the high tomorrow is 70F. Not a fan of it because when that warm front is caught up to by the approaching cold front, there will be high chances of tornadic activity in our area.
We lost the elevator and the roof off our river house last year to a tornado, lost a horse and half our house to one in 2012. Tornados are beautiful to watch in their own way, but so destructive. I usually watch and photograph the ones that come through our area when I can, as our field is elevated and can see a good distance.
*For context, the elevator isn't a luxury but a necessity. My uncle was shot in 2003 and is completely disabled (blind, cannot walk without assistance, has to be fed, bathed and tended to often for hygienic reasons). We have to have the elevator to get him up onto the porch and into the house, as he cannot climb or go down stairs. River houses are elevated off the ground 15-20 feet in this area because of flooding along the Black Warrior River.Comment

I didn't do the master shower, but the piping/handle to turn the thing on is against a wall that is shared with the outside wall, so I don't know. Had the house on like 69-72 with the cabinets open. Will do the same during whatever next cold snap there is I suppose. Went OK.
I don't know. This **** makes me nervous due to my unfamiliarity and lack of handy nature.Comment

I had a very light stream of the hot and cold sides of both bathroom sinks that have both handles and, kept the kitchen and other side bathroom on too but those just have one handle.

I'm in Alabama and while it's not that abnormal to get below freezing temps in the winter, it's usually like mid to upper 20s for a day or two. But we were down in the teens and single digits pretty much all last week.
The other problem I had is my house is built on a slab, so the water lines ran under the slab. But I've had three slab leaks in the last two years, so last summer I got the plumbing completely redone in my house. The water lines now run up through the garage ceiling into a walk-out attic and then back down to where they need to go. That attic got really cold with the weather. I thought I had everything pretty well insulated up there, but that's where the lines froze.
I kept both the hold and cold lines running a light stream after the plumber came out and didn't have any more issues. But I am going to see if there's something else I can do in that attic.Comment

You're in LA, right? Did it get that cold?

Gah. Slab **** terrifying. So even with the new piping it still froze up?Comment

Re: So what's the weather like where you live?
Our weather here in Alabama can't seem to make its damn mind up. As usual.
In the last two weeks, I've dripped the faucets to prevent freezing pipes, had the heater going for my animal companions, then had to turn on the air conditioning along with a window unit I bought to go at the back of the home, followed by flood warnings, tornadic activity and sporadic rain showers with high wind gusts.
It's still January. The high this week was a humid 71F. The low next week is predicted to be 32F.
My heart belongs in Alaska with my remaining family left there, I feel. My body longs for it.Comment

Hopefully it doesn't get that cold again for awhile, so I've got some time to figure out why they froze to begin with and correct that. I did add some more insulation after they froze last week.Comment

Re: So what's the weather like where you live?
The new piping is pex, which is supposed to be more resistant to bursting. So at least there was that. The old copper pipe might have burst.
