    hmmm.... I like Auburn.

I follow pro sports, but they don't excite me. I guess if I had to choose an NFL team I would say the redskins since Campbell is their qb and Carlos Rogers plays for them also. And my 3 best friends are fans of the eagles, cowboys, and giants respectively, so it makes things interesting.

      Re: Regarding people's favorite teams

NFL - Born and grew up in Northern Virginia so I am a hardcore Skins fan! Just before high school we moved to Michigan, so I root for the Lions as a distant 2nd team. I liked most Michigan based teams growing up cuz I had so much family there.

MLB - Growing up I was a Yankee fan because Don Mattingly was my favorite player and the Yankees had a minor league affiliate (Prince William Cannons) in our area so it was nice seeing some of those players do things (Bernie and Gerald Williams). Once the strike hit I stopped watching baseball much only to get back into it while in high school. I was in Michigan by then and started rooting for the Tigers and have ever since 1997.

NBA - Same as baseball, my favorite team was whatever team my favorite player (Clyde Drexler) played on. So I went from the Blazers to the Rockets. After Clyde retired, I stopped watching basketball for a couple years. I started getting back into it around 1999 and the Pistons became my favorite team.

NHL - Always been a Capitals fan. The Red Wings are the only pro sports Michigan team that I despise. Now that I live in Chicago, combined with my hate for the Wings, the Blackhawks have become my other team I root for.

NCAA - Favorite teams are Michigan State, Arkansas, and Virginia. The reason I root for Arkansas is because my dads family is down there and my first pop warner team was named the Razorbacks.
      My Teams:
      NFL - Washington Redskins
      MLB - Detroit Tigers
      NBA - Detroit Pistons
      NHL - Washington Capitals
      NCAA - Virginia Cavaliers
      NCAA - Arkansas Razorbacks
      NCAA - Michigan St Spartans

Well I live in Portland and hate the Blazers so I dont get why there is some need to support your home team, there are enough people here to support that team so I dont get why its some rule or necessity when rooting for a pro sports team. Secondly, there is always the problem with the home team being shoved down your throat by the local media and thats a major turn off for me as well. Im a Niners fan because my Dad was a Niners fan growing up, Im a Dodgers fan because I loved watching them back when Fernando was pitching, Hershiser, Strawberry when he came through, Piazza was my favorite player for a really long time. NBA wise Im a Pistons fan because I loved the way they beat the hell out of Jordan year in and year out, so all 3 of my favorite teams are in different cities then where I live now.

            Packers... check
            Brewers... check
Never followed the NBA too close (I cheered for the Bucks and would go to a game or two) but Chris Paul and David West really drew me into the game so I am a Hornets fan...
Hockey I didn't follow until getting stationed out here so I am a Caps fan.

Other than that, My favorite player as a kiddie was Warrick Dunn since I watched him at FSU and I loved Tampa growing up due to him and Sapp and Brooks, so as long as they aren't playing GB I cheer for the Bucs.

I follow Maryland for college FB/BB, not quite sure how that came about but it's been like that as far back as I can remember (think I grew up hating Duke & NC)...

I cheer for the Badgers too, even though they make me pull my hair out, because I have friends on the teams.

People move. It happen a lot of times you keep your teams. Some times you maybe keep one of the teams.

That's exactly what I mean man. As far as the more then one favorite team in a sport, I agree. I can kinda see it as ok if they're in different conferences in a league though. One thing I would like to know is why don't you want the team in your city/state to do well, why don't you root for them? Why don't you like them? I'm honestly asking because I just don't get it. Again, is it just that I'm a New Yorker and want the team in my city/state to win all the time? Why don't you want that?

                  Re: Regarding people's favorite teams

Gee...a favorite team justification topic. Well, I'm a military brat and have moved all my life. Since my wife and I've been married, we've lived in five different cities in the last five years. Anyway:

NFL: Niners and Broncos. The first football game I remember was the second Niners/Bengals Super Bowl, which my dad and I watched live either late night or crack of dawn when I was kid living overseas in Turkey. I was hooked. My family then moved to Denver where we lived for 14+ years, I went to college, met my wife etc., and with the love that city has for Elway (top three QBs of all time) and the team, it's hard not to be sucked in.

MLB: Indians and Rockies. Indians because rooting for a lovable loser after watching the 'Major League' films is fun, and the Rox...well, see above.

                  NHL: Avalanche...self explanatory.

NBA: Spurs. David Robinson was a role model for me growing up and watching him play was great. Admittedly, I don't follow the NBA all that much.

FIFA: Germany/U.S.A. and Bayern because of my family heritage, where my Aunt was born in regard to Germany, and well, I'm a U.S. citizen.

I mean, what's worse (for the TC or others), having teams from different cities, rooting for the teams where you lived the longest (and really, do most people really stay in one place all their life?), or rooting for the teams where you currently reside?

I follow the Minnesota teams because that's all there is on sports radio, the papers, and local news. They aren't my favorite, I'd root for my two NFL teams over the Vikings if they played, but at the same time, I'd root for the Vikes over nearly anyone else because I'm in the state.

Well I'm sorry if I forgot to include that moving to a city doesn't mean you have to switch to that city/state's team. It is common sense that you shouldn't switch allegiance's just for moving to a new city/state. I also didn't think about military "brats" or people in my first post so I'm sorry for that. I was mostly talking about people that grew up or spent most of their childhood life in one place but liking a team across the country, again if their home city/state has a team.

Just be cautious. New Yorkers don't exactly follow these rules either. It's easy now because there's the Yankees and the Giants. But, when the Yankees sucked, I remember people in NY telling me they were Braves fans.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

I think taking a narrow view on it without knowing the person is shallow and pedantic.

I grew up in Vermont, where local teams are considered to be either from New York or Boston. When it came to picking favorite teams here is how it worked for me.

Florida State (CFB) - My cousin went to FSU when I was a kid, I adored her as a child so around 1987-88, FSU became my favorite team.

Dallas Cowboys (NFL) - I grew up with a family full of Dallas fans, it wore off on me.

Kansas City Royals (MLB) - All of my friends were either Red Sox or Yankees fans, choosing KC was becoming Switzerland in those debates. Plus George Brett was my favorite player.

New York Knicks (NBA) - Went with the 'local' team here.

Georgetown Hoyas (CBB) - This is the school I wanted to go to plus Patrick Ewing was my favorite player as a kid.

New York Rangers/Detroit Redwings (NHL) - My (much older) first cousin played for their farm league teams back when there were like 6-10 NHL teams, so I root for them now.

Been a Michigan fan ever since i was in kindergarden, my grandpa use to always bet me a dollar on the OSU/Michigan game when i was little. Of course he always gave me Michigan. Back then i could take that dollar and get a pack of baseball cards. Never stopped following Michigan. I love both Michigan football and basketball. I don`t have any other favorite college teams.

I think its funny when someone tells me that I have to cheer for OSU because i live in Ohio. Get a lot of crap here most of it is fine, sometimes people take it to far but for the most part people are fine.

I always laugh when people say that i can`t be a real Michigan fan living in Ohio. Just because you live in the state for the team you root for, it does not make you a bigger fan than someone who doesn`t live in the state. Nor does going to a certain school make you more of a diehard.

I guess the way i see it, me serving in Iraq does not make me a more of an American than someone who has not served there.

I think people can root for whoever it has never bothered me, heck i don`t even care if your a bandwagon fan. As long as your not rooting for the Taliban or Al-Qaeda

NFL - Giants, the 2nd one as baseball is least in the way, this postseason is better than the NBA regular season

NBA - Suns, the NBA team since the beginnning, though i follow the locals too Knicks more than Nets on that part
