The whole liking a randomly good team from across the country with no connections to them when you were 6 years old thing just doesn't hold up.
You either A) couldn't have been THAT big of a fan to still be a hardcore fan 20 years later or B) should have gotten to the age where you figured out that it was ******** that you still claim them as your team because they were the best when you first started watching.

So I since I grew up in CT and was a Dolphins fan as a kid I should have "figured out" at some point in my teens that it was stupid to be a fan of a team 1,000 miles away and become a Pats or Giants fan? How is that not bandwagoning? Just stop rooting for the team I actually care about and manufacture some BS passion for a local team?

Not really, I could care less about the NFL outside of fantasy football. I guess I 'root' for the Fish and the Giants but I still haven't watched a Dolphins game from start to finish since 2003. I wouldn't call myself a fan of either team.
It is interesting that the only sport I've stopped caring about is the one which I liked an out of market team. Obviously you shouldn't change loyalty's just because you move... that's common sense. I'm assuming you grew up in or around Philly/Penn. So you actually have a legit reason at least in my imo to be a Eagle fan even if you were to move. You grew up an Eagles fan, watching the games on TV maybe even going to a few in person.
When I made this topic I was aiming it towards the fans who didn't grow up near their favorite teams, some cases no where near them. Like other side of the country. When in fact the city/state they actually live in has a professional team. To me that doesn't make sense. There are a few cases were I can see something stopping that. One being their dad is a fan of HIS home city/state team and you starting to root for them as well as a father/son thing. Then their are military families who move around a lot.Fan of NYY,NYG,NYK

I like the Grizzlies(Van/Memphis) because they were the worst team on NBA Live 2000/NBA 2k and that was the only team my friends would let me play with to even their chances to win. The same year we "came across" a way to watch all of the NBA games on the satellite so I threw all my support to them because I could actually watch them.
I am a Jaguars fan because I'm sort of anti, the Jags and Panthers came into the league the same year and you had to put the code in on Madden to get the expansion teams so everybody wanted to play with the Panthers because they were local, so I was always stuck with the Jags.
I went to ECU so thats legit, even tho i picked the school based on playing with them on College Football USA 96. Didnt even know where the school was, just knew i wanted to go there.
So Jags, Griz, and ECU all based around videogames.
As a child i bandwagoned Jordan and the Bulls, Carolina Tarheels, 49ers, Deion Sanders and the Falcons, Penny Hardaway and the Magic etc...Ericmaynor3.com

To the OP...I was a fan of KC before Carolina got a football team. Been a fan since 1990, and not ever going to leave them. That makes me a bad "fan" for not rooting for the local team so be it. It's like he expected us, when we were younger (in my case, 6-7) to say "I better be careful in picking my teams and pick all teams close to me or else people will call me bandwagon". Please. I didn't even know what bandwagon was until I was way older.Comment

Duke basketball/FSU or Miami football is the worst for males in their early 20's right now.
Unless your parents went there and were hardcore fans that had you watching every game from a young age or something.....then your argument is probably pretty weak.
Even I was smart enough at 6 years old to realize I couldn't randomly pick the best team across the country (or even in my region) and fake a love for them that would last the rest of my life.
Whats dumb about liking the team from a young age and watching them play every game. Obviously you are going to grow fond of that team whether they're 5 miles away or 500 miles away.
Its not like local teams are sending you a paycheck or anything.
