Re: My dog just died.
Good for him, hope he lives a long healthy life. I'll definitely consider rescuing. Still battling these demons though.Comment

Don't wait too long. There's a good buddy out there right now who's waiting for you and his/her time might be running short. Sleeping in some cold pen just waiting for a home and some love.Comment

Re: My dog just died.
I KNEW I shouldn't have clicked on this thread. I don't even normally read OS Neighborhood threads. I've had tears streaming down my face since page 1. I'm very sorry to hear about your loss, Alex. Sounds like you had a great buddy for many years and it's important to remember that as lucky as you were to have her, she was as lucky to have a great buddy like you.
I know it seems so bad at first. I had a golden retriever named Sterling that I got when I was 8. He was with me all the way through growing up, and even me going off to college. I had a ton of great times with him but he eventually started getting sick. It was after I left for school so my parents did all they could because he really was a family pet. He developed some cancer and developed a tumor in his head and a couple on his legs. There were surgery options but with no guarantees my parents opted not to choose any of them and put him through any of it. When first diagnosed they said he had about 6 months, but he was tough and lived a full couple of years. When he got to the end it was rough though, he could barely walk at times and was just in bad shape. Some days were better than others but eventually there were just too many bad days and we had to take him in. That was so hard. He lived a full 14 1/2 years and I know he had a great, happy life much like your dog did.
It took me a long time to get over him, but after around 10 months I got a dog of my own, a crazy little lab/hound mix who is just awesome and we are inseparable. She weighs 50 pounds but is sitting on my lap now and as I read these stories I am crying while being sure to pet her and let her know she is loved.
I still remember Sterling and think of him often, but it's all the good times we shared. I was definitely lucky to have him around for all those years and now I am lucky to have Ellie by my side. Time will help. As much as it hurts, time goes on. And eventually things will get better. In due time I'm sure you'll have another buddy who will be lucky to have you and will be a great friend for many years.
Take care, man.Comment

Re: My dog just died.
It's going to take a while. And everyone is different so you can't even gauge it based on what others have experienced. Everything gets changed, life isn't the same. I know. But eventually you'll get there. Just know that life goes on and it will get better. There's no set amount of time when all of the sudden it gets easier. Just keep your chin up man.Comment

Re: My dog just died.
Sorry to hear about your loss man.
I have a cat and I think of her as family.
I love dogs too, but a dog is impractical in my situation. Cats less maintenance.
Pets are FTW.
IMO all pets go to heaven and people who legitimately love animals go there too ... so you and your dog will meet again.Comment
