Good point. I'm sorry for your loss as well. I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy.

        Re: My dog just died.

I wouldn't get another dog too soon... it's hard to deal with having another dog immediately just because you think about the old one constantly... It's worse if your old dog was really well-behaved and the new one (especially if it's a puppy) is a crazy bastard... you start to resent them sometimes. So yeah, I'd suggest holding off for a bit to make sure that you're ready for another dog... you don't want a "rebound dog" that you end up regretting later... heh.

My dude The York died about 2 years ago now -- he was pretty young but got a tumor on his kidney I believe. My mom called me when I was at a concert saying that she was taking him to the vet, and she ended up having to put him to sleep that night (I didn't find out until the next morning). She still spent some ungodly amount of money ($950 or something) just for the testing that they did and for putting him to sleep, which seems just criminal to me... but at least she didn't opt for surgery or something, as there were no guarantees that he'd make it or live beyond another few months. He was the craziest dog ever and one of the smartest:

I don't know what I'm gonna do when Ozzy goes... he's my homie even though he lives at my Mom's house. I've unfortunately had to go through even worse things than dogs dying from old age or sicknesses, so it's lost some of its egde I guess... We had another Shih-tzu and a Yorkie (tiny little 5 lb. female that was The York's woman and had puppies a year or so before) that got out of our yard and got killed on the highway back in 2001.. yeah, it was bad. I didn't even see them afterwards, but my mom was a wreck when she found them and brought them back to bury them. The York escaped that time too (we think the neighbor kid left the gate open) but he miraculously came back before he got into any trouble and was there waiting for us when we got back.. I guess the other ones stayed together, as they were right near eachother when my mom found them. My band was playing a cancer benefit for the weekend, but The York stayed in the house with the gate wide open until we got back... I'm sure he knew what happened or that something was wrong...

I'm sad now... misery loves company though.

              Re: My dog just died.

My ex-wife had to put our cat to sleep earlier this month. We had him almost 10 years. She had him @ the pet hospital for almost a week. They diagnosed him with diabetes and liver was failing. They suggested putting him to sleep, of course, my ex wanted no part of that. Eventually, she agreed to let him go. We thought she was running up a huge vet bill. She text me yesterday saying the bill was only $350. So we're thinkin they didn't do what they could to save him. I feel sorry for my ex. We had no kids so Courtney was her baby and the one constant good thing in her life. That loved her as much as she loved him. I still call to make sure she is doing ok. Non-pet owners don't understand the bond so they just blew it off when we talked to other people. Though we are no longer together, I was the only one she could talk too about. Losing our cat saddened me to. She has another one, I have one that we had together but neither compare to the one we lost. To the OP, I feel you. Sorry for your loss.

Today's grief is worth than yesterdays. It is really tough on me right now.

Today has really just been an awful day for me. I was so set in my routines and now its all different. Amazing how life can throw these curveballs at you.

Today really sucks. Read some nice poems though about grieving dogs. They helped a little bit.

                      Alex...

                      Just found this thread.
I'm very sorry to hear this.
                      Hang in there....
Most people with pets know what you're going through and will be willing to listen to you as you grieve to help you get through it.
To some it may sound silly...but pets are family too IMO and when you lose one, it can be very painful.
Sometimes the void is even larger as in your case it sounds...you spent so much time with your dog.
Just keep the good memories front and center..

                      M.K.

                          No.
But my girl Smokey is 13.
After reading the thread this morning....I went to do some chores...which involve me going out in the truck...she ALWAYS comes with me...and if anyone else comes for the ride...she always jumps in the front seat and gives them a look like..."hit the back....this one is mine". Well this morning I looked over at her on the ride and can't picture her not being there.
