Sorry to hear about it. I've had 2 family dogs die in my lifetime. They went up in the woods to be alone during their final hour. Couldn't imagine if it happened in the house. Only time will make things more bearable.

My dog did the same exact thing. She wanted to be alone.

My mom told me that she read somewhere that it is somewhat common for animals to try to go somewhere secluded or far away when they know they are going to die, though I don't know why. That's why my mom got scared one night when we knew our Newf wasn't feeling well and she went out to give him his medicine before she went to bed (he had hypothyroidism in his later years) and found him laying in the snow by the fence at the back of our yard. She actually put a blanket on him to keep him warm and was afraid to open the door the next morning, but when she did he was back by the basement door (where he usually slept) waiting for his biscuits. Why he was by the fence that night is a mystery as he had never laid there before. The night he did pass away, he was near the basement door where he usually slept. I should probably add that outside our basment door was another small room beneath a small addition onto the bakc of our kitchen and he slept on an old quilt on top of a piece of rug on top of some foam rubber pads. He had a nice insulated doghouse but never used it.

Yeah, my dog died less than a year ago from eating rat poison. He also went off to a place in the yard to die that he wasn't known for hanging around at. I couldn't even find him at first. I finally found his body and wasnt sure if he was alive or not, so I started calling his name and he didn't respond. Later on we found a box of rat poison that had pretty much been eaten all up. I'm a grown man but losing that dog put a lump in my throat.
