Nahh, I used local dating sites that wouldn't help you unless you're looking for an Israeli gf... Anyway, I don't think it's about the site itself, but more about identifying early if the lady is for you or not. Sure, there are different sites for different audiences and you need to find the ones that match you best, but it's about a feeling if a certain lady is a waste of time or not. I must say that I'm quite experienced with those sites, since I met all my gf's through those sites (I don't go out much, don't go to bars, don't go to parties, don't drink and also my friends didn't really have anyone to match me because they weren't that successful either...LOL. Oh, and I didn't seem to meet any girl by bumping her at a grocery store like they show you in the movies...weird!).
Anyway, I'm not ashamed to say that I used those sites a lot. I had some weird dates and some...ummm..."physical-hot" dates, but at the end I found my woman and she found her man. If you ever have any question or need some advice (completely subjective, though) you can PM me.
      Good luck!

Re: Anyone try online dating sites?

I was bored one night, living in an apartment by myself, and decided to check Match.com out. I browsed through the profiles of women living in my area when I came across one that struck my eye.

I clicked the link to message her, not knowing you had to be a paying member to contact other folks. I almost said, "Screw this!", but decided to go ahead and pay the $19.99 to sign up so I could e-mail this girl.

The e-mail I sent had the subject, "No pressure, but I paid 20 bucks to contact you." I went on to tell her a bit about myself, etc, etc, etc. She wrote back the next day and we started chatting a bit on AIM.

One night, I was about to hit the sack when I decided to check AIM one last time before bed. She was online. We chatted for a bit and she told me she was sorta feeling blue. We decided to exchange phone numbers so we could continue the conversation on the phone. We talked for a bit when she asked, "So...what if I came over to hang out with you...right now?" Keep in mind, this was at like 11:30pm. I said, "Sure, what the hell!"

So she came over and we spent the ENTIRE NIGHT talking. Not making out. Not fooling around. Just talking. I mean...we were literally up until 7am talking.

11 months later, we were engaged. We got married in June of 2006, and now we're expecting our first child next month.

So yeah...I guess you could say it worked for me...the ONE TIME I tried it, lol. 1 for 1 is a pretty good average.

Re: Anyone try online dating sites?

I ended up using Yahoo Personals. Worked for me. And they had a free 5 day offer or something, so i used that, didnt meet anyone but on day 6, my future wife saw my profile, paid the 20-25 bucks to be able to contact me, she did, and now ive been married for almost a year.

I never felt weird about meeting that way. Felt like i could almost screen the person more so than i could at a bar. Do they smoke, do they drink, religion stuff, sense of humor. I could find all that out and cut the cord pretty easy if i had to. Im not a smoker, so i hated going to a bar or a restaraunt or the bowling alley or where ever, meeting a girl, and then finding out 2-3 weeks later she smoked. That wasted 2-3 weeks of my life.

From what I can tell, the girls on CL are fat, ugly, or ****ing crazy. And any combination of the three.

                    Maybe it's just my area.

Re: Anyone try online dating sites?

By the way, I never payed to a dating site in my life. Oh, and there was a time I was able to log on the largest dating site here and do everything a "paying-member" can do...there was a trick, but they blocked it later on. Anyway, I met my wife on another site and she actually payed for a few days there, and that's how it happened: I sent her a PM with my Messenger address (same PM I sent some others - copy->past...LOL). Just before she received my PM, someone else sent her a PM with HIS Messenger address. So she added him to her Messenger but the guy was logged off (thank god!), so she added me and I was logged on... and the rest is history...

I don't mess with the online dating thing. I've met about 10 chicks off of Blackplanet and Myspace during my college years...70% disappointment.

Some times it works some times it doesn't. In TJ's case it was a winner, but I have heard a lot of loser stories too. My brother met someone on line and he has been dating her for a couple months. I really don't think it is any different than meeting a girl at a club or bar. I think it does make it easier to be yourself or to be fake too. You just have to go with what you feel is best for you.

Re: Anyone try online dating sites?

We are in a different period now. 5 years ago, you talked about meeting someone online and a lot of people thought you were nuts. Today, it's completely acceptable.

I'm also not a big club guy. I visit bars, but go mostly with my friends to enjoy each other's company. I also hate speaking over loud music. I rather get to know someone.

I have considered joining one of these sites, but the price has scared me off a bit. Also, I'm not sure which site is best. I see these success stories and everyone talks about getting married. I'm not even thinking about marriage at all. Maybe someday I'll want to get married, but as of right now, I don't ever want to. I just don't see the greatness of it. Maybe it's growing up with family that just didn't have successful marriages.

Anyway, I want to join these sites, date around, meet a girl I may really like, but eHarmony, for example, talks about marriage, marriage, marriage. Match.com seems to say success is through marriage. It doesn't match my idea of success. And let's be clear, yea, sex would be awesome, but it's not the sole reason I want to joina site. I'd like to meet a girl that really matches me.

Since I don't want to get married, I guess I'm assuming that most girls (and my assumption is that more girls want to get married than guys) that join these sites are also looking for that soul mate. That knocks down a great percentage of the girls on these sites. If I knew that there were girls on there that want the same thing I want - to meet someone they can spend time with but not necessarily get married to - then I wouldn't hesitate to join.
