I was in for 8 years and some change, got out in 08 I finished up in recruiting which was another interesting scenario.

Oh, just read your last part, when I got out I became a corporate recruiter, then the economy drama happened and I was laid off. I just went to school full-time, the new GI bill is the hotness man, they give you BAH and pay your full tuition, I would strongly recommend using it.

I was in the Army, 52D (generator mechanic), and nah I wasn't exactly high speed. Only served 4 years from 200o-04'. Ft. Bragg was my only stateside duty station, but I spent a year at Camp Hovey in Korea, and that was a blast. I'm like you Cusefan, looking to finally put the G.I. Bill to use.

Yeah that was Basic Training. Man I actually liked basic believe it or not. I didn't like getting up so early in the A.M. haha but I had fun. Couldn't understand why people were stressing over it. Not going to lie though didn't too much care for that 22 mile or whatever it was full pack hike. That sucked. Man it was dead NJ winter cold as hell and by the end of the march I was walking with my jacket off and shirt WIDE open pouring with sweat. And those company runs were a b**. A one eye, one knee skinny had to be 50+ year old (or at least he looked it at the time) broken down drill took us on a run and was killing us. The only thing that made me stay with him was pride, scratch that, towards the end it just turned to pure hate. No lie. I just said to myself "I'll be damned if this old white(no offense to anyone, I needed motivation LOL) broken down hillbilly is going to out run me" lol. I swear I just kept imaging jumping him and choking him out. When he finally stopped I think he could see the anger in my eyes. LOL. I was step for step with him and he stops and asks me "Where's your company?". I turned around and we were the only two in sight.

Great story!! I was a DI for two cycles at Benning. I wanted to shoot half my class in the first week. By the end of the cycle I hated to see them go.

I can relate to your story. I had a "Top" that was 5'6 199lbs when I was stationed with 2nd AD in Northern Germany. He looked like he would get winded just getting out of bed. He used to run our asses off! He would just keep going and going. 1sr Sgt Homer Payne. 18 years with the 82nd. Dude was a trip.

I used to have some issues with border patrol back then. Like I would take a jeep and go to a local guesthouse and drink with the locals issues. One night I was out and about when a fight ensued with some local German fellows that didn't care for our presence in their country and the way we chased their women. I responded with a "Golly Gee" and got arrested by the Polizei for assaults. I was innocent!! Top came and got me at the station and decided I was going to be his driver until I got orders to go elsewhere. He was going to keep his eye on me every field problem. He called me a waste of talent.

That lasted about 2 months. We rail headed down to "Graff" for Reforger and the 2nd day in I ran over a heard of Russian Boars while driving him to a meeting. I then jumped out and finished one off with my bayonet. He freaked out,in a good way. He couldn't believe what he just saw. He helped me throw the big pig on the hood of the jeep and off we went to the meeting. He then checked on my service record and decided I was cool. After that ee would both sneak off for beers.

To tell you the truth, this may be the first time I've ever referred to it as "Nam". I usually say Vietnam. Hey, got to go to lunch, will join in when I get back. Great thread.

LMAO! My pops was definitely over there the same time you were. I would ask him but if he hasn't told me by now I'm pretty sure he doesn't want to talk about it. My mom just now told me a story and if she had to wait 40 years to do that I'm pretty sure thats just a story best untold for now. He's the nicest guy you want to meet. A better man than me so I'm just glad it didn't turn him to something else. They still happily married after all these years and nowadays thats saying something.
