My dad spent 16 years in the Army. He had his basic at Fort Knox. I know he was at Fort Campbell, Fort Jackson, Fort Bragg. He was a drill sergeant, green beret, MP and embassy guard. He did 3 tours in Vietnam and was a POW for 18 months. The Army let him go after 16 years of service. He pleaded to let him stay in another 4 years so he could have his 20 and pension but they wouldn't do it. They gave him a second Purple Heart and a medical discharge.

Active duty U.S. Marine Master Sergeant.

I've been in 17 1/2 years and I feel every bit of it.

My best duty station was definitely my last one in Washington D.C. I worked the hours I wanted, when I wanted, and with only two other Marines.

My worst duty stations could be either Somalia, one of the two tours in Iraq, or the upcoming tour to Afghanistan. Something tells me it will be the latter.

Thanks to all those who are serving and/or have served.

Damn brother,I thought you were retired. I believe your right about Afghanistan,I wish I could go with ya. Somalia was the worst place I have ever been. EVER. I'd take the Sunni Triangle over that place any day. I got there in late 92 and left after being wounded on October 3rd 93. Whan were you there and where? I'll bet we can share some stories about what we saw in that place. Unreal.

Please keep in touch if ya can.

Hopefully I will be there with ya. I am applying with KVR as an electrician to go back there for another year.
When rookie Randall Cobb was told by this U.S. Marine that he was a big fan of the wide receiver, Cobb said, “I think I’m a bigger fan of yours.”

It seems like that whole coast of Africa is up there with the worst places ever. I was there at for the first few months of '94 for Continue Hope and Quickdraw. I'll be content if I never have to go back to that country again.

All the briefs I've received on Afghanistan, especially where the Marines are going, lead me to believe it won't be much better. That place is in bad, bad shape. I don't think the average American can comprehend just how bad some of these countries can be. The problem set there is challenging to say the least. We get out of one country after 7 years there and we go right into another one for probably at least that long.

No doubt. There's a few folks stateside that hate this country and think it's a bad place to live that I would love to send there. They wouldn't last a week. All of us that served there know exactly what a real ghetto is.

No doubt. I would like to say what I really want done there but it's against TOS. I was there in 02 and there's somethings that just can't be fixed. There are some great people there. But the bad outweigh the good. Some tribes need to be........nevermind. Stay in touch and try to keep in touch.

Thanks to all you guys for your service. My father was a Vietnam Vet (Air Force) and always told me since I was a kid.."I was in the service, so you can go to college."

He was proud of what he did, and has great memories (and some bad ones) but my parents always told my sister and I that we were going to college. So the military was never something I was interested in joining.

That being said, I appreciate all you men and women answering the call and doing what you have to do to keep my lazy butt safe.

It's amazing how many years a lot of you have done like Jackdog with 24. I've done around 3 and think I've been through a lot but when I put it in perspective I havent done **** compared to a lot of you guys. I'm still not sure if I want to "career" it or not, I have 2 years remaining on my contract. I have no idea what I want to do, I mean I dont know what I want to do next weekend lol. When I signed up I told myself I was going to do my 5 years (Corpsman sign a 5 year contract not the typical 4 ) and get out, but I'm not so sure about what I want to do.

LOL!! I was like that at the end of every enlistment. I can't tell you how many times I said "The hell with this BS". Then about 2 months before ETS. I Re-up. If I wasn't wounded out,I'd be already waiting for Squint in Afghanistan.

LOL I was the opposite. I was doing my bid and getting short and said "You know this ain't that bad, maybe I'll stay around" but the minute the Army said "Anyone want to leave early to save us a couple of bucks?" I was like

I did make one vow though. I'LL NEVER MAKE ANOTHER BED IN MY FREAKING LIFE!!!!! Wife gets upset couple times a year but she knows what she was getting when she met me.
