When I was in Japan I worked along side the Camp Fuji Fire Dept., and we'd go out to these training areas as support to put out range fires.

One day the Chief took us to this old WWII bunker. It was just weird being inside there, wondering what it was like on that same day about 50 yrs ago. There was Kangi (spelling) written on the walls, bullet holes, it was just eerie.

It's truly an honor to have served, and God Bless all those who have and who've made the ultimate sacrifice.

Anyone here seen The Longest Day? Best movie on D-Day on a tactical level (whereas SPR was more focused on one squad). Rommel and a few other generals in his staff expected the attack to be at Normandy.

What really did the Germans in though, was the fact that Hitler was a horrible commander-in-chief.

God bless the Western Allies (I'm not including the Soviet Union because they were just as bad as the Nazis.)

Seeing their sacrifices on an HBO miniseries is beyond words. I can't even imagine what they went through. As said before, thank you isn't enough.

I dont know what would be scarier, being on a boat for D-Day or Jumping from a plane a few hours before the main assault.

Its great how the Media has shed light on the sacrifices made during WWII but it is about time they show what the Vets of the Korean War went though...

The Korean War is ripe for a BadA** game or movie to be made about it. It is pretty much the only War were one Soldier could actually hold off Thousands of Enemy soldiers. I got well versed on the subject due to all the Korean War books I would read when I did battalion Staff Doody.

I'm gonna go and watch my "World at War" series, the one relating to D-Day.

I remember reading a book (can't remember which as I've read several regarding D-Day). But a german officer woke from his sleep...early. His first job was to grab his binoculars and scan the coastline to see if anything is amiss. He saw the invasion fleet coming right towards him. Probably the first German to see what was about to happen. He says he never ever saw anything so impressive, he never imagined anything this massive. He remembers saying to himself that moment..."We have lost this war."

I've seen it, there are two cuts of the movie one at the original 178 minute length and one in color and slightly shorter for TV. It's a fantastic movie and one of the few movies made back then that would still work well if commercially released today because it's so detail oriented.

Hitler wasn't horrible from '39 to '41ish but that's neither here nor there. If he was awake at the time of the D-Day invasion things could've turned out differently as the German High Command was set up in a way that no action can be done unless Hitler authorized it. Another scenario for the Nazis at least neutralizing the effects of D-Day would be for Hitler to actually listen to Rommel who knew the information that the Nazis were getting about the invasion was all a ruse and was convinced it would happen at Normandy.

I agree with you Thank God for the Allies but you can't just not thank the Russians. The Russians had the most casualties in the war and if it wasn't for the Russians sticking it out and surviving when everyone thought they'd fall then WWII would've gone down MUCH differently. Yes Stalin wasn't exactly the best man in the world but you can't omit what those Russian soldiers went through.

There's a bench in London that recreates one of the conferences (I think yalta) where Churchill, Stalin and FDR sat. The bench statue only has Churchill and FDR with a gaping hole in the middle (great for tourists to take pics I must admit) where Stalin should be. There's actually some historians and the like that think Stalin should be represented. I'm not starting an argument here but It was a struggle of epic proportions for everyone going against the Nazis. You can't just brush away the achievements of one of the allies, and one that suffered so much.

Stalin also didn't lift a finger to stop Nazi Germany's initial aggression. He had his sights on Finland.

There not much Stalin could have done. If The USSR went on the offensive against Germany in the beginning of the war, They would have been walking into a meat grinder. The Soviets only pushed The Nazis back into Berlin after they had been decimated in Stalingrad. If Germany had fought against the Soviets in the begining of the war, WWII probably would have turned out different. Even still, Germany still would have been unable to fight on two fronts so the outcome would have remained the same.

They actually both fear each other. So they thought they could use each other and in a way they did. Until Hitter decided to go against the treaty he made with Russia. That was actually the down fall of Germany. They had to fight two fronts. Bad move by Hitter.

I agree with what you said by the way. Just pointing some other things out.
