Re: The Food and Beverage Thread

Just curious, what do some of you guys eat when it comes to healthier "snacks" or pre-meal foods?

I want to somewhat clean what I'm eating. I'm not looking to go full-out health nut or measure the exact amount of calories, etc, that I'm putting into my body but I would like to eat a little bit cleaner.

I'm guessing a lot of fruit would be a start?

I eat so much fruit during the day it's crazy. Bananas, grapes, Asian pears, peaches, strawberries. I also eat peanut butter, a kraft milk bite for breakfast. Granola, sunflower seeds.

What's a relatively good price for NY strips? I know how to shop chicken, but shopping steaks is new to me and while I live on a budget I still want to eat good. Kroger's ad has NY boneless strips on sale this week for $5.99/lb.

I'd stock up on those...they're usually 6.99 lb

Yeah, you'd have a hard time trying to find a better price.

I need to find somebody with a Kroger card then, lol. I figured it was a good deal, just don't know how to gauge prices for beef/steaks.

For some reason I just want to grill all the time now.

Gotta watch Kroger, often when they put beef on sale it will be select.

(Noob question) As in USDA Select? How many different grades are there?

Ahem, I'll field this one. For your buying needs? 4. In the industry? 8.

                    Prime/Choice/Select/Standard

Each with their own level of grading for Marbling. +/o/-

Rarely if ever will you see Prime beef in the supermarket. I remember seeing prime beef in Costco once but that was about it. And while it may be select, don't let that deter you. A good grill temp and some nice seasonings and the average palate won't notice the difference. All I buy is select beef with the occasional choice Ribeyes when I'm having guests over.
Look at this way. Prime = Expensive Steakhouse near you. Choice = Logans roadhouse, Select = Steaks at home, Standard = Alpo.
Litterally. Standard and the 4 grades below are considered canner meat.

Actually it is USDA Choice they have on sale. Snap. So yeah, check your Kroger ads.

Martin's has BOGO on Fresh Top London Broil or Roast. They also have country pork ribs on sale 1.99/lb and beef back ribs for BBQ and pork spareribs for 2.99/lb.

I've yet to try and do ribs in anything.

Yeah fruit. Although personally I only eat bananas since I don't like fruit/veggies.

If you wanna go low cal you could look into rice cakes. White Cheddar go about 35-40 calories apiece.

Or there are 100 calorie "snack size" bags of popcorn. You actually get a decent amount for only 100 calories.

Greek Yogurt isn't bad either, I recommend Honey Vanilla.

IMO, high protein / high fiber is the way to go. Which reminds me they have these choc & pb fiber brownies now that run about 90 calories.

I'm always looking for low calorie snacks (although not necessarily "healthy" per se), to squash the hunger down between meals.

Have class tonight so I am at it early today. Ostrich burgers. Added salt, pepper, tablespoon of sriacha and 2 tablespoons of panco and mixed it all up.

Moving into an apartment in the fall so trying to learn some of my mom's more complicated recipes I don't know.

Cooked shrimp burgers last night, a recipe we got from Emeril awhile ago. Oh so good

I am in love with everything to due with Buffalo Chicken. Even Buffalo shrimp is amazing. Every time i go to a restaurant I always see if they have some kind of buffalo chicken sandwich.

Just spent a week down in Disney, so much good food, but perhaps on of the best things I had down there was something so simple.

The Dole Whip, so so so refreshing in high humidity and mid 80s weather.
