I'm so thankful I have my emergency credit card, otherwise I would be in some seriously deep financial trouble. As I mentioned earlier, I got a pretty nice tax return this year but also had my 30+ year old boiler/furnace bite the dust. Earlier this week, the HVAC guys came and replaced the old one. The house is now VERY nice and warm and I have three times the water pressure I did before, but the overall cost was $7,000 due to some work that had to be updated since it was no longer up to code. I did not have $7,000 in my bank account, but do have my "emergency credit card" which has a big limit on it. I put the charge on that, got my refund a couple days ago and paid most of it off. I can now pay off $500 each month on the card and have the remaining couple thousand dollars balance disappear pretty quickly. I don't use the credit card to buy any goods. I just use it for emergencies like this, or to buy oil for the house, etc. Things that I will slowly pay off.

And that is EXACTLY what an emergency credit card is for. Non-discretionary spending.I'm so thankful I have my emergency credit card, otherwise I would be in some seriously deep financial trouble. Re: What are YOU going to do with your tax return money ?
Just found out I'm getting about $900 back. No idea what I'm doing with it. Probably going to the bank and disappearing slowly just like the rest of the funds in there. I am kind of thinkin about a TV though, best thing I can get for under $500 maybe. Best believe y'all at OS will hear about it if I do get one....Comment

Re: What are YOU going to do with your tax return money ?
Well I just bought a house, so we are getting the 8000 refund from that, on top of the 2500 so far in Fed rebates.
we are going to have to pay our local taxes, so it will be about 700 there.
We are planning to use some of that money to pay for some new things at our house and the rest is going into savings.Lets go Pens!

OK, so I got $1,600 back between federal and state refunds. A bit less than I expected but I'll take it. I'll probably pay off my small credit card balance and buy a video game (probably MLB '10: The Show) and maybe a book. The rest is going in the bank.New Jersey Devils- 1995, 2000, 2003

Re: What are YOU going to do with your tax return money ?
While I was initially saddened by having to spend $7,000 on the new boiler, I have to say that my house is now INCREDIBLY warm and it is not burning through oil like the old one was. Plus, since the water is no longer leaking through the boiler and down through the basement floor, I have a lot more water pressure throughout the house. Plus, next year I'll get a $1,500 rebate from the feds and a $500 rebate from the state for buying this energy efficient boiler. So barring any other unforseen travesties, my return next year should be put to great use. (I'll finally pay off what will be a minimal amount left on my two remaining student loans, and if I get the raise/promotion I'm hoping for this April, thngs will be even better.

Re: What are YOU going to do with your tax return money ?
Yeah.... So I did my taxes today and owe the Feds $1533 so looks like no return for me this year.
To make matters worse, it looks like the homebuyer tax credit of $6500 that I thought we were going to get, we won't get. Stupid Government stipulations that basically penalized my wife and I for getting married in 2008. If we had not gotten married, we'd qualify for the $6500 tax credit. Hell, technically if we had not gotten married, she could've bought the house we are currently in (with both of our financial backing) and we could qualify for the $8000 first time home buyer tax credit since this would be her first home.
Things like this make me despise this Government even more. Long story, short... Anyone who got married in the last 5 years and who owned a house before that, won't get the tax credit.Comment
