Re: Weight Loss - Tips & Daily Check-in

I tried the low carb thing but didn't like it personally. I kept getting what i would call a "brain fog" where i found it hard to concentrate and think properly. No doubt it works great for dropping the weight but i didn't find it sustainable in the long run.

For someone who likes to workout as much as i do (lifting 5-6 days per week and cardio 6-7 days per week) i found it didn't give me the energy i needed. Good luck if you can get through it Roadman the first few weeks are gonna be tough!!!

      Thanks Jonesy.

This one issn't as rough or as bad as Atkins or SB. After the first week, weeks 2-4 go through different carb cycles. For instance, the first day of the second week is called a baseline day where you start adding other veggies like potatoes in, whole wheat bread, bagel, etc... and then the second day is a low carb day. Day 3 might be a high carb day, then back to low carb, etc.......

It's like jolting your system so it doesn't become like a pattern.

We will see. I'm hoping by the end of the week, I'll want to start to work out.

Re: Weight Loss - Tips & Daily Check-in

I've heard and seen some awesome results on bodybuilding.com from carb cycling which sounds like what you are doing so i have no doubt it'll work great for ya if you stick to it. Are you doing weights / cardio or just trying to lose it with diet only?

I did Atkins for a while many years ago and while i did lose some weight it was pretty extreme and impossible to have much of a life while doing it and it gave me headaches and bad breath as well. These days i pretty much stick to calorie cycling and eat more on big lifting days like back, legs and chest and eat less on smaller body part, rest or cardio only days.

The thing about fat loss is there are literally hundreds of methods that will work its just a matter of finding one that works for you and one you can sustain over the long term. There's no "better" or "worse" method imo because everyone's body is different and what works for you might not work so well for me etc.

A quote i always think about often: "Nothing tastes as good as being lean feels". I need that everyday when i drive past about 12 fastfood restaurants on the way to and from work.

Heh, my wife just mentioned I have bad breath.

As soon as the first three days are over with, I'll go with the Bob Harper DVD's I purchased over the summer. They are 2 one hour workouts that involve cardio/weights and one 30 minute DVD doing an upper body workout with some cardio. I was sweating profusely before I quit about a month ago. Now, I want to ramp it back up.

On the days inbetween, I want to go to the gym and do some cardio and 30 minutes of swimming.

I tried Atkins as well about 5 yrs ago and lost 35 lbs, but gained it all back.

That seems to be a pretty common thing with Atkins (the gaining it back bit). I did the same thing. I decided then and there that any diet that told me that a piece of fruit was a diet buster i'd avoid it like the plague.

Those Harper Dvd's sound pretty good. Insanity or P90X are great too if you want to stick with that sort of thing. Might be a nice step up once you get comfortable with the BH one's. GL man, make sure you check in regularly so I can see how you are doing. It's much easier doing it as a shared effort imo but at the end of the day it rests on you. Saw this badass quote this morning on a fitness journal i follow:

Its YOU vs YOU. You fail its on YOU. You succeed its on YOU. YOUR choice.
Hopefully we can get some of the other regulars like ODogg, Born, Jeremy etc to post in here regularly as well. Some of the other regular's got hit with the ban hammer so they won't be back unfortunately.

I've seen ODogg posting in other areas, not sure how he is recovering from his doctor visits. I will definitely check in on a regular basis. I think it helps us stay in line and we can gain advice as well.

Here's a link to Harpers DVD.

40 bucks for 4 of them.

Coming out early October in the states, I think.

Re: Weight Loss - Tips & Daily Check-in

I'm really pleased so far. Besides the headaches and bad breath, I've lost 6 lbs in two days.

                From 282 to 276.

Last night, according to the book, I was suppose to endulge in a 8 oz T Bone. We didn't have any steak on hand, and we had three kids in three different places. I picked up their food(Rocky Rococo Pizza and breadsticks) and decided to go to Hardee's(Carl's JR) for a low carb burger. (no bun, lettuce wrapped around the bun) That was tasty, but I didn't know how saturated fat would flow in with the fish and chicken I've been eating lately.

Today is suppose to be the last day of headaches. We'll see.

Egg Cheeseburger coming up. 1 egg 5 egg whites, 3 oz lean turkey meat and cheese on top.

I'm still working at it. I just haven't had much success over the past two weeks. I've only been working out for 3 weeks and I lost 8 pounds the first week, .4 the second week and was up 1.6 pounds this week.

At first, I was going by the Body for Life book but, I'm thinking about changing my work out regiment up a little bit because I'm more concerned with losing weight than gaining muscle right now.

Re: Weight Loss - Tips & Daily Check-in

                    find your bmr
eat less then your bmr (100-500 cals less)
do this for several months/years or until you reach your desired goal/look.

**you may need to adjust your deficit if you stop losing weight. If you do, it means to eat less. I would also recommend logging food so you know what you're eating and how much.

I'll also add, do not just set a goal on weight. Weight is just a number, it's pretty meaningless unless you know what that weight is made up of. Try to aim for a BF% goal as well. If you go to a gym, find a trainer who's not busy and ask them to measure it for you. Seriously, ask. If you don't go to a gym, have your doctor do it.

                      Caching.

                      Down another 2lbs.

Lost 8lbs so far in 3 days.

I know this is the first week and it's mostly calorie restricting and water. I would expect the normal 1-2lbs per week weight loss after this week.

Re: Weight Loss - Tips & Daily Check-in

Caught myself getting off track the last three weeks. Missed some workouts in the first week and then took the last two weeks off completely. Full days of college football on saturdays and NFL on sundays gave me the perfect excuse to sit around, eat junk food and drink all day which left me lazy for the rest of the week.

So to get back on track i'm going to try to pull off the full 90 days of p90x and get real strict with my diet. No modified/shortened routines, just the full thing (minus the Yoga part, i know its good for you i just cant get into it so i figure ill replace it with some cardio work). Big time commitment but i figure its worth getting up at 6am for, hey if you can do it Jonesy so can i right? Started today with chest and back, i was a little rusty but luckily my numbers were still somewhat near what they were before. I'm scheduling it so that my rest day is on Fridays and hoping that by working out on Saturday and Sunday mornings it will keep me in the right mindset to avoid eating unhealthy foods while lying around my house all day watching football.

Plus the best part is if i pull off the 90 days my last day will be on Christmas Eve, which gives me a week to relax and cheat a little bit over the holidays before starting again in the first week of January. I plan on checking in here at least once a week so hopefully you guys will be seeing me pop up in here regularly.

I did atkins a long while ago. Your weight will fall off but at some point you will realize you can't live without eating carbs forever. It is a nice way to drop weight quickly, though.

I think the best thing if you aren't a calorie counter or just don't know what to do is weight watchers. The wife and I fell off for about a month and so I did gain 3 back but I'm still down 40 lbs since April or May of this year. It really teaches you how to eat so even if you cheat for a meal, it doesn't kill you.

Oh, and don't be shocked if you lose 20 pounds your first month on it. I lost 60 pounds in like 2.5 months on atkins.

                            It's not Atkins, though.

This morning I had Oatmeal with Protein Power. I wouldn't be able to have that on Atkins.

It's called, Crack the Fat Loss Code. For the next 3 weeks, I'll have low carb days(one carb serving before 3 oclock), and two high carb days.(2 servings before 3 oclock) Then, 2 weeks of accerlerated fat loss, similar to week 2-4 but eating carbs in you last two meals of the day. Weeks 7-8 are called maintenance with one cheat day included.

Then, it's back to week 2-4 and repeating the cycle until you lost the desired weight. This book wanted to point out it wasn't Atkins, only for the first week.

                            Wow, 60lbs on Atkins.

I've tried WW in the past. I might have to go back if I don't succeed on this one.

I see, seems like a nice way to lose some weight quickly. Out of all the things I've tried I think long term success would be with weight watchers.

I need to get back on the horse, here guys.

However, I seem to have already started. I left Blacksburg at 235 to go to Australia, and after a metric **** ton of walking, I'm now 231.

I have a bet with my fiance to get down to 225, with a further benefit to me once I get down to 220 (by the time she gets back late November). I'm not going to lie... they're sexual.

I'm going to post every day in this thread. I'm going to get this done.
