Re: Weight Loss - Tips & Daily Check-in

Alright Alright. I weight 280. Trying to get down to 225. Going to be a long grueling process. I downloaded a calorie/workout app for my iphone. I am allowed 1890 calories a day. Did my first workout tonight...nearly killed myself on the elliptcal. No pain no gain though. Going to keep at it.

This thread rocks! For anyone interested the app is myfitnesspal and its free.

Interesting: I have 360 calories not used today but -
13g over my daily fat goal
4g over my saturated fat goal
    1650mg over my sodium goal
    13g over sugar
I guess Mcdonalds for lunch was a poor choice...lol

Re: Weight Loss - Tips & Daily Check-in

I'm currently at 220lb and feel ok with that. I'm still not as tone as I think I should be. The Summer was tough to stick to the schedule and I found myself eating much more than I should during the evenings. I was dropping in weight though pretty fast.

I had a heckler today while I was running. "Run Forest Run," they shouted. That kind of ticked me off some, but oh well.

Anybody got any tips on running on a treadmill? It hurts the **** out of my shins and calves. I mean, it starts hurting literally within 3 minutes of jogging. I toughed it out for 30 mins today but, it hurt like a *****.

            230 and I'm 5'10. I guess I'm considered obese.

The reason I'm having to stop is because my legs not because I'm fatigued and it sucks. It was like this last time I was working out too except last time I wore a pair of old New Balances. I figured a better pair of running shoes would help so I bought a pair of Reebok Zig Tech's and it seemed like my legs hurt even worse. I guess I just need to keep at it and get my leg's adjusted to running again.

I've had the same problem when I first started. I'm also flat footed so I had to order some special shoes from my cousins work. It's called Foot Solutions and the shoes help a lot but they are very expensive. Best thing to do is to stretch as good as possible before hitting the treadmill.

I dont know your normal activity level, but you may want to just start by walking at a fast pace(ie just before jogging pace) on the treadmill to get your legs acclimated. See how they hold up. Increase time or incline and once you can get through that relatively pain free, then try running again...maybe try intervals of 5min running/5min walking for 30-45min and increase from there.

Is it hurting right under your knee cap? This happened to me a few years ago and I could hardly move my legs to run. I asked a guy I know that runs ultra marathons and he said I should not be running every day and to rest a couple days. Also, he mentioned to ice my knees after running. I think he called it runner's knee.

That's my advice as well. The old saying 'you have to work before you can run' has some merit to it. You need to get your muscles / joints / cartilage etc accustomed to the pounding and stress jogging puts on your body. I'd try intervals for the first few weeks (ie stop after 3 minutes if that is when the pain is starting, walk until it stops hurting then run again). It will get easier and unless you have some issues like DTX and Dave mentioned you should be able to overcome it and if not you may need to visit a podiatrist. We i started running i jumped in and ran for 30 minutes and put up with the pain but i was sore for week. Now i can run for 30 minutes every 2nd day with no pain at all.

I'm still on the road with work and have been very consistent with my workouts. Yesterday afternoon i did a 30 minute run up and down some pretty steep hills, was totally drenched in sweat. As i'm travelling with work in my car i have to keep the workout clothes in a plastic bag in the trunk because it stinks so bad. This morning i got up at 5.30am and did a great weights session with my dumbbells + various types of pushups and crunches. Really looking forward to getting home to my wife and daughter tomorrow!

Thanks for the advice guys. I think that I honestly just need to get my legs accustom to the pounding they're taking. I'm not sore at all today so, I'm going back but, with a different approach and an old pair of running shoes. Wish me luck.

Nah never heard of it but it's not my cup of tea. Sounds like another one of those 'can't miss' gimmicks that is almost a complete waste of time. IF you wanna get in shape, eat less, don't eat crappy food, workout consistently and eat healthy alternative's as much as possible. No magic pill or remedy is going to make as much difference as simply putting in the work.

I had a good weekend workout wise. Saturday i was home alone for much of the day and as i often do i started to fall off the wagon and started eating too much (huge breakfast, half a large bag of chips, a huge homemade burger for lunch) but i managed to catch myself and realised i was undoing my hardwork from during the week so i headed into the gym for an intense chest workout followed by 45 mins of cardio. I had my post workout shake and didn't even feel hungry for the rest of the day so didn't eat anything until the next day. I often go into auto-pilot when i'm alone and/or bored so i really have to pay attention to that or i can fall off the wagon so easily.

Today (sunday here is Australia) I ate really well and did a solid bi's + abs weights session followed by another 50 mins of cardio.

I usually don't workout on the weekends and prefer to do M-F but i'm away for 2 days this coming week with work which will cut back my workouts so i did sat and sun to compensate.

Down 2lbs this week which is good. I'm not overly concerned with the scales though because i'm lifting so much weights. I'd be happy enough at my current weight (as long as it was mostly muscle and i was only 10% bodyfat ).

Keep it the good fight fella's.....

                            Back to back posts FTL...

Up at 5am this morning, chugged the sugar free V and into the gym for a back workout.

I really suck at pullup's (can only do 2 or 3) so i started today's workout with Pullup negatives. Basically you hop up onto the pullup bar like you have done a pull up and slowly let yourself lower to the ground. Also followed that with lat pulldown to use the similar muscles i'll need to strengthen to get better at them. I won't let these suckers beat me.

After the negatives and lat pull down i did 4 sets of deadlift followed by 4 sets of DB row's. Then i headed out the door and took the dog for 45 mins of walking / running.

                            Diet today is:

Bfast: 1 cup of oats, 1 scoop of protein, 1 cup low fat milk

Lunch: 1 cup brown rice, 1 skinless chicken breast, 1 cup of veges

Afternoon snack: 1 banana, 1 cup low fat milk, 1 scoop protein

Dinner: steak and salad with ff dressing.

So far so good for me. I started working out last Wednesday and weighed in at 230. I weighed myself again to day and I'm at 221.8. I know I'm going to hit a wall soon but, hopefully, I can knock off some more of these easy ones first.

I gotta get back to my workout regime. From March-July I lost a lot of weight, and became more toned overall. I also felt healthy, worked out regularly, and ate a lot better.

In July I moved to Chicago and I'm back with my wife now (we weren't living together from March-July due to military duties) and I've been eating bad again, and working out less.

I haven't gained any weight according to the scale, but I don't feel as toned if that makes sense. I've been working out 1-3 times a week, but my diet has been horrible.

I'm pissed at myself, because the hardest part of working out is getting into the regime and then it becomes a habit. I finally got into it and worked out daily, and now it's tougher and tougher to motivate myself to work out.

Overall I'm still much better physically and diet wise then I was a year ago. My eating has been bad but not even close as bad as it was a year ago. I really miss working out though, it makes you feel better all around.
