it will vary depending on your sex/age/weight, but anywhere from 2,000-3,000 is a good rough estimate (you'll notice foods are based on a 2,000 calorie diet)
I found a very good calorie calculator here. It will give you both Maintenance and Fat Loss levels, depending on what you're looking for.

Do NOT look at/pay attention to other calorie calculators that will severely overestimate your necessary calories if you are overweight. They rely on outdated formulas that will increase your consumption far too much for each extra pound you're carrying. For example, when I was first starting, I was a little over 300 pounds, and one calculator told me I needed 3,600 calories per day to lose weight! (At that same weight, the calculator I linked told me 2,400 per day was Fat Loss range.) Stick with the one that I linked because it's been working great for me.

Yeah that calculator seems pretty good. It says i should stick between 1700-2200 for my height and weight which is about right from my experience.

Diff'rent strokes and all that, man, but I must just be one of the lucky ones. Whenever I feel a little hungry in between meals, I just grab a glass of water and 90% of the time it will do the trick. The other 10% I gotta grab a low-cal snack.

Another great hunger depressant is simply to eat slower. I've also found another good way to help burn calories is to stand for an hour or two each day that you would normally be sitting. This isn't always possible (and it's more difficult than it seems) but if you don't want to exercise/want to supplement your exercising, give it a shot.

I'm good on the whole standing for hour thing. I do enough exercise in my life and when I work 8 hours a day standing up and walking from one spot to the next almost the entire time...I think I'll pass on that one.

          Thanks though.

One other hint; I've found that caffeine (in excessive amounts) can be a major appetite stimulant, at least for me. If I have more than two cups of coffee or tea, I find myself being ravenously hungry for the rest of the day. Anything less than that and I just eat a normal amount of food and have no desire for anything more.

It's very difficult to distinguish between dehydration/hunger. They can sometimes feel identical. If I'm hungry before its time to eat again I'll usually down a 1/2-1 L of water and be fine till its time to eat again.

You're right...sometimes it is plain old hunger. If that's the case, just eat. You're not doing yourself any favors by going into starvation mode.

Starvation mode doesn't really come into play unless someone is consuming a very low amount of calories (think 1200 or less). Not sure what that has to do with hunger/dehydration being indistinguishable. Are you advocating to just eat whenever you feel hunger even though it could be dehydration instead?

any of you guys calculating the number of calories just to live? I mean min by min, you are burning calories because you are using energy to function.

Just checking in, I won't be weighing in again until Thursday with a goal weight of 283, but I'm already pretty worried I won't be hitting the goal this time. I know I haven't been doing all that it takes to get there and the weekend of the 4th really kicked my ***. But we will see Thursday. I hope everyone else is doing better than I.

I'll be back on Thursday with (hopefully) a better report than I expect... maybe if I run myself into the ground over the next 3 days I can hit that goal.

Not me mate. I had a shocking weekend, too much crappy food and beer. Basically undid 2 weeks of work in 2 days. Back to it today......

No. I would try to drink a glass of water first and see what happens, especially if it hasn't been too long since your last meal. If those hunger pangs don't go away, it might not be a bad idea to eat something. I was always told to listen to your body. You don't need to eat a gourmet feast, just a little something to satisfy you.

Haven't checked in for a little bit but my last weigh in was last Wednesday at 328. I'm hoping to be 326 or lower tomorrow! That'd make my weight loss 34 lbs! I'd love to hit 325 and have lost 35 lbs, but it's a reach..

Awesome weigh in this week! I'm down to 323.6! This is from April 13th where I was 360! Down 36.4 pounds in 3 months! It'd be so awesome to be at 260 by April 13th of next year. My current goal is to be under 300 by the end of summer. We'll see!
