I'll be back on Thursday with (hopefully) a better report than I expect... maybe if I run myself into the ground over the next 3 days I can hit that goal.
It has to be even tougher for you if you're a chef. I cringe when I have to use 93/7 lean ground meat for a hamburger instead of 80/20 chuck. Can't imagine the sacrifices that have to be made if you are used to making good food all the time. I suppose you probably know a lot of a healthy substitutes though..

I find I really have to eat light if I have plans to go somewhere. I enjoy my beers and good meals so I eat really light before I go to picnics and what not.

The days that suck are when I realize I have to go to a dinner and forgot about it and had a nice big breakfast and lunch. I try and end up ordering something light which sucks!

Alright, I'm back on the wagon. I weighed in today at 239.4. I'd like to make it down to 210 by September, when I head to Australia. My fiance wants me to feel comfortable with the idea of wearing a bathing suit... which I haven't felt comfortable with since I was around 10.

The website says I should expect to be 210 in October if I lose 2 pounds a week. I don't want to be unhealthy, but I'd like to get there in September.

Re: Weight Loss - Tips & Daily Check-in

So I decided to finally join this discussion as I need some motivation. I dropped 20 pounds in the begining of the year in a biggest loser program here at work. I took 4th. But now I haven't at all been motivated to get back and I probably put about 10 back on.

I was 245 last October and now I'm probably around 235. The lowest I got was 225.

I'm going to the gym with the wife tonight so I guess if I'm going to join in the discussion I should get on the scale and see exactly where I'm at.

I went and bought some new shoes yesterday and got my gym bag ready so there's no excuses.

Another weigh-in for me today. My goal weight was 283. I didn't think I was going to hit it because I haven't been doing the best on keeping up with this. But I got on that scale and hit 282.5! It was a sigh of relief to know I didn't ruin my progress. And I know I will be right back on the wagon for my next weigh in on the end of the month, because it would be so great for me to get under 280. Here is my progress so far:

                  May 15: 303
                  May 31: N/A (no weigh)
                  June 15: 291
                  June 30: 286
                  July 15: 282.5

In two months, I've dropped 20.5 pounds... and it feels fantastic. At this rate (dangerous to say, I know) I will hit my goal weight of 220 in January. (I'm guessing I won't even be satisfied with 220! But as a guy who has been overweight his whole life, the idea of weighing 220 pounds is pretty good.)

It's pretty difficult! As a chef I know all of the tricks restaurants use to make food taste better than you can get it at home. Ever try to copy a recipe but it "just doesn't taste the same"? Restaurants load on butter and salt like crazy. I have to stay away from doing that. But you're right, I do also know some tasty, good-for-you meals. In my opinion, the simpler, the better. I will buy a whole turkey on my day off, and go home and prepare it and cook it, then refridgerate what I don't eat. Then, I have "lunch meat" ready to go (without all of the processing you get from Oscar Meyer, etc.) and turkey is really solid health-wise. Throw on some low-fat mayo, lettuce, and tomato, and you have yourself a fantastic, healthy sandwich.

I was thinking the same thing from my 4th of July food extravaganza! Turns out I didn't do so bad. Good job, man.

Yeah, fresh lunch meat sounds awesome..I use hill shire farms and a food scale to weigh the amount so I know the points..

I'd so love to be a chef, at least a home chef. I waste a lot of time watching food network and then translating their recipes with some healthy alternatives. But, usually only have the time to try maybe one recipe a week.

The next time you go to the grocery store, check your lunch meat package for the sodium content. It's likely to be high no matter which brand you choose, but try to go with the one that's the lowest. Controlling the sodium is a positive of preparing your own lunch meat. The caloric content's going to be about the same but man, they get you with that sodium.

I love meat, and it's (relatively) low in calories, so it's great to eat!.. but when it comes packed with sodium, it can bring a whole host of other issues.

I like Jennie-O's low sodium lunch meat. Check it out if you can find it. It can be in the deli case or on the actual shelf or both.

I think I may have mentioned this one before on here.

My wife and I have stopped buying processed deli meats since last November. Instead all our sandwich meat come from roasts that we cook ourselves. We find cheap pork, beef and ham roasts, slice them up and we have sandwich meat for the week.

Is that due to the sodium? So the sodium in a pork roast will be lower than deli ham?

I'm no nutritionist by any means but I would imagine there would be quite alot less sodium, fat, preservatives and chemicals in a roast than in processed deli meat.

Yeah, true, I should start doing that, just get a ham on Fridays and slow roast it for the following week for sandwiches. And throw in vegetables as a side.
