    Re: OS Running Thread

Here's a question I've heard mixed responses in regards (if it's been discussed in this thread, I apologize): Is there a drastic difference between being in "basketball shape" versus "5K and beyond" shape? There are many times where I feel like I'm in excellent basketball shape. And yet, distance running past 3 miles feels virtually impossible. Maybe I'm answering my own question. I just feel like I've known folks who could run distance laps around me that I'd then turn and outrun on the hardwood.

I suppose I'll throw out a connected question as well: it'd make sense to me that sprints and other quick running drills would be most suitable for basketball training. However, would jogging distances also aid? Or is that all in my head? I've heard some claim that long distance running could possibly harm my basketball shape, but I've never put much stock into such a claim.

There is a difference, as you are using two different forms of energy. Basketball is more quick-hitting, short bursts of energy, what we call anaerobic or without oxygen. Distance running is aerobic, or with oxygen.

I wouldn't go so far to say that jogging would hurt your basketball shape, but yes, sprints and other short-term exercises will suit you better.

Fellas I need some tips. How did you guys ease yourself into becoming a regular runner? Did you begin by walk / jog repetitions or just tackled the pavement?

Any opinions on Couch to 5K program?

I started off literally doing 10-15 minute jogs that damn near killed me. I would do it every other day without timing myself or anything and do push ups/sit ups for 30 minutes on the days that I didn't run. After a few weeks of that I could start doing 20-25 minutes and eventually doing a long run of about an hour on Sundays. I would do that routine for 2 weeks and then on the 3rd week I would do an easy 2 miles on Mon, Wed, Fri and then 4 miles on the Sunday and then do two weeks at the original distance.

Training for a race is the easy part because you have something to train for. Running to run is just so boring.

One of my friends did it a few years ago so he could start running with me and he loved it. He improved quicker than the program progressed, and he was running 3 miles with me without a problem by the end of it. He did play football in HS about 10+ years ago, so at one point he was in shape, just let himself go.

Not sure what kind of shape you're in, but even if you don't do C25K, I'd suggest a walk/jog program.

To each their own. Possibly because I've been doing it basically non-stop for most of my life, but I love running. Helps clear my head, keeps me shape for the most part, and it helped me pick up chicks. Can't beat it for exercise in my book.

I think they're pretty new, but does anyone have a pair of the Sketchers GOrun shoes? I'm pretty intrigued by them and I'm in the market for a new pair of running shoes soon. I have Nike Free's and I like them, so I was just going to get the Free 2.0's, but these Sketchers' look pretty nice.

I went for a run yesterday for the first time in a few months (broken leg kept me down) and felt like dying afterwards, I only ran for like 10 minutes but it's a start I guess.

Not as exotic as portugal, but my wife and I just signed up for the "national marathon" in DC March 17th. It will be our first ever (and likely only) full marathon. We've done a few 1/2s, but wanted to try a full before we have kids. Plus we'll be visiting one of my good friends and staying at their house. Training begins this week, got a 9 mile run this weekend.

Just completed my 7th marathon this weekend in Portugal, setting a new PB for myself.

No matter how many times I run them the euphoric feeling you get after never gets old.

Great news! It's 6 degrees and snowing in CO, so I definitely will not be running today.

I want to start running to get in shape, but I have always considered running rather brutal in the past. Any tips to get started, as that seems to be the toughest part?

I am pretty average as far as my weight goes, but I'm not really in shape, either, and would like to change that, to be honest.

EDIT: I see there are already some tips in this thread and I have looked the Couch to 5K program over and it looks promising.
