How are your knees? Haha. My knees were wrecked after my first and only 21km/half marathon.

Haven't ran in like 4 weeks, just been hitting the gym. I ran the half marathon back in March. First time. I used to just run those 5k and 10k fun run challenges then I tried the half marathon on 3 days of training. Went on full adrenaline not the training haha managed a 2 hour and 20 min finish time. Only got into running last October.

My knees were fine. My gluteus and hamstrings were a little tight and my feet were sore for a few hours after the race, but otherwise, no real physical issues.

After looking back at how this first half-marathon went, I already have a few changes to prepare for the second one (no timeframe)

-Follow a training program. I didn't do one this time and I know it hurt me a little, especially towards the end when I was traveling a lot for work.

-Schedule better. This is tough with my job, but I'd like to find a better pocket of time where I'm home more before the race.

-Take a protein bar/bites with me. This was probably the thing that hurt me the most the final 2.5 miles. I ran out of energy and while the gels and chews were good and helped, I didn't have any protein in my system and for me, that's not good. This is a simple fix.

-Do more strength training. I really cut back on this to make room for more running and I'm not sure if that was a good idea.

I make those modifications and I know I'll shave time off of my next race.

Allow me to come in and muck up all these 5K and half marathon stories and whatnot. I ran an officially timed mile for the first time in probably over 15 years today. I mean, I've run miles, just not timed them.

Anyway, I play basketball a lot and I've been biking a ton lately. Hadn't run a mile since April.

          My time: 8:46.

Obviously, I came out of this feeling like I have an exponential amount of room for improvement. But then I thought about the time I ran a 5K back in 2007-ish. I'd been running and jogging a fair amount leading up to that but my time was still around 27 minutes (I think more than that, actually).

Is there a difference between being in distance running shape (yes, I'm counting one mile continuous as "distance" in this case) versus sprint/stop basketball shape? I feel pretty good on the basketball court even though my distance times are awful.

Yep, you're working different parts of the aerobic system with hoops as compared with actual running. More fast-twitch/anaerobic work in hoops and straight aerobic with running.

Nothing wrong with 8:46. That's a good place to start from if you're looking to run a couple of times a week.

I'm starting to train for a 10K that is in a month. My goal is to finish under 50 minutes. Feel like that is a good goal since I just got back into running.

My doctor complained at me for the second year in a row about my HDL being too low so I figured I should actually start exercising. Girl at work is working with me and running is one of the things I figured I could manage. Ran for the first time in 3 years last week and made it a good 1.1 miles one way, but had to walk back from there. Yesterday made it almost 2 miles straight, walked a bit to catch my breath, and ran another mile or so when she caught back up. We don't run that fast, maybe an 8:30 - 10:00 mile pace, but it's an improvement over when I was in 6th grade and one of the fat kids in gym and I could maybe it make it a half mile before huffing and puffing the rest of the mile.

Booked a 26.2 in Titusville,PA for Aug 2. Drinking beer on the patio is great but it is nice to have a race to train for as well. Will be my first in the US no less.

How low is your HDL? How does your LDL and overall cholesterol numbers look? I've had "low" HDL for a while (usually right around 38-40), but my LDL and overall numbers are well within the normal range and my cholesterol ratio is more than 3.5, which is considered good in most medical circles.

Anyway, I hear you on worrying about the number and running is certainly a good way to try and boost it.

Running with someone is great for when you're just getting started; you can pace each other and push each other, too, without overdoing it. Sounds like you're starting on a good path. Don't feel bad about walking. Heck, I walk 1-2 times on my longer runs for 30-60 seconds (either because I need to or I'm taking a quick water/gel break), so nothing wrong with that.

I've been pushing myself too hard, running a lot every day. Last night I ran and my hips, back and knee started to hurt, which has been happening a lot recently.

My HDL is 32, my LDL is 70, my triglycerides are 85. Overall I'm 119. So my cholesterol is fine but not only is my HDL is the small molecule HDL so it doesn't do jack at cleaning anything up.

I ran 2.25 miles straight today and walked/ran the last 2.5. I take another class or two a week since we have a gym at my office. Lot more than I've ever bothered doing. And working with someone definitely helps. She's been doing this almost 5 days a week for ages, and although she gets a little overambitious for what I can do, it's still nice having someone that knows what they are doing to help. I would never keep up on this by myself, especially when I'm sore the next day.

Yeah, those numbers aren't bad at all, in fact, very similar to mine.

Ran 7 miles the other day; longest run since the 1/2 marathon as I'm slowly starting to ramp the mileage back up. Felt good. I am running before work 1-2 times a week to beat the heat. It's been an adjustment, but definitely better than waiting until 7-8 p.m. to go for a run.

Cant believe I've only just found this thread...

Got in to running last year in a bid to shift weight (I was trying to impress a girl, don't ask) and now no day feels complete without a run. I completed my first competitive run last month, a local 10K which I finished in just over 52 minutes.

Now I've got the taste for more so once I'm back off my current vacation I'm gonna try stretching out for half marathon distance in time for September.

Walked onto a 10k course today without registering. Ran it and won it with a decent time but everyone was slow as it was a horse track. 1/2 marathon in 2 weeks.

So, ran a mile along the road in around 8:46 a few weeks ago. Tried it again on a real track and finished in 8:13. Happened to be traveling through Phoenix and gave it another go around in the neighborhood I'm visiting. Finished around 9:00. I was trying to pace because of the insane heat (105-ish today) but I still felt dead from 0.84 miles on forward.
