Quick check in: I am enjoying The Malcolm X bio enormously a few chapters in as he does not idolize Malcolm (specifically mentioning discrepancies in his autobio) yet is also very honest about what occurred. Marable saw previously unreleased government documents and other documents from the NOI. You can see why this took two decades to create.

Also, in anticipation of my Kindle, could anyone recommend free, public domain books for me to check out? So far, I have a small list of authors/books. (Any book published before 1923 should be available)

James Joyce - The Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (and maybe Ulysses)
Dumas - The Count of Monte Cristo
Twain's entire catalog
The Art of War
Alices Adventures in Wonderland
etc.....

Any specific suggestions? Thanks!!

So I'll finish up the Stieg Larsson Millennium series this weekend...a little late after my initial pace but still pretty good. Great stories, eager to watch the Swedish film versions.

After this it's Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games, and then I'll re-read A Song of Ice and Fire, and then if I'm daring enough, I'll start one of two series, The Dark Tower or Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time.

Suggestions?

I ran across some books of mine that my brother had for awhile and started reading one: Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller. I forgot that it was one of the ones I had to read in high-school.

Just finished Full Dark, No Stars by Stephen King.

I thought it was a good read. Give it a look if you want a quick horror fix, some of the stories are downright disgusting. You may find yourself hating a couple of the main characters in the stories because of how selfish they are.

I've heard nothing but good things about Hunger Games, I may jump on that next as well.

Just finished reading The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz and Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. Both were pretty great reads. As far as other things I'd recommend off the top of my head.

I am an avid Sherlock Holmes fan / reader and have a huge collection of books from a number of authors. Pretty good thus far...

Finished Animal Farm, liked it but I didn't enjoy it as much as Lord of the Flies.

Grapes of Wrath was going to be next but I finally got a library copy of True Grit. New movie caused everyone else to want it too so I've sat on the waitlist until today

Finished of the Larsson books (awesome ending!) and am six chapters into 'The Hunger Games'. Yeah, it's pretty good.

Think of The Running Man mixed with a little bit of Midgar-ness (the city in FFVII with the big, fancy center and the slums around and under it) topped by short story called The Lottery that I had to read in high school and you have the setup.

Recently read "Fahrenheit 451" again--one of my favorites.

Reading "The Fighter's Mind" by Sam Sheridan. Pretty good stuff if you're a fight fan.

Sure. I'll try to do it without spoiling the plot for you - Basically it follows a family from through the Trujillo era of the DR to the present. It features many parallel narratives from various members of the family. The order of the narratives isn't anywhere near chronological but you'll be able to figure out who's talking and when. One of the things that stuck out for me is that the story almost seems like a bit of a satire at times. The narrative voice is really interesting and informal. There are also various footnotes around the book that contain witty and sarcastic descriptions of events that happened during the Trujillo era. If you don't speak spanish you might want to have a translator around as he does use some phrases at times. There are also various sci fi references in the book as well. It's going to be something different to anything that you've read before since most people treat a serious story seriously while he does it in almost a satirical manner.
