Re: OS Book Club Pt II

Funny the Hobbit and LOTR should come up...I just downloaded them for the kindle and I'm going to reread them again (Hobbit for the 2nd time/LOTR for the fourth?). I hated the Simmarillion...it was like an encyclopedia, which is cool, but it wasn't really a story or anything.....just background/filler material to flesh out the world.

LOL on the songs.....I read them the first time through and QUICKLY skip past them on any re-readings.....I might as just well say "and then they SING!" and flip to the word after the poem/song....
The line must be drawn HERE! This far, no further!

I started reading The Hobbit a few days ago. Weird that y'all were already discussing it in here.

I finished reading book 1 of the Hunger Games trilogy last week. Waiting on books 2 and 3 to get here. The first book was great, highly addicting.

I have no idea how popular this book it- but has anyone read All the Pretty Horses by Cormac Macarthy? I've been reading it for school, just curious if anyone has read it, and what they thought about it.

I have it, but haven't read it yet. Its part of a trilogy right? How are you enjoying it? Have you read No Country for Old Men?

Yes, part of something called the "border trilogy."

This book appears to have gotten a bunch of praise, with quotes from major publications lauding McCarthy's style. The story is alright, as I enter the last third of the book I'm enjoying it more and more.

Since I'm reading it for a class, I'm paying attention to McCarthy's stylistic choices, such as his incessant use of the word and, his long, uninterrupted paragraphs, and his constant use of personal pronouns, rather than proper nouns, which often leads to (what I believe to be) needless ambiguity. I find a lot of the writing itself to be disagreeable, which is why I was curious to see if anyone else thought the same way.

And no, I haven't read No Country for Old Men.

I read all three in about a week and a half. I really enjoyed it.

I finally started Game of Thrones after putting it off for a good long while now. I'm about halfway through and I have the 2nd book waiting for me when I finish.

Just recently read somewhere that Muse's album The Resistance is kind of a soundtrack to George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four so it makes me want to read that again with that thought in mind. Haven't read it since I was a sophomore in HS.

One of the recent books I just finished was “Blood, Sweat and Chalk” by Tim Layden. If you’re a dire hard football fan who loves the strategy behind the game, this is a can’t miss.

About 75% through the second book. My wife read them all and forced me to read them...very impressed so far. Very addicting.

Ready somewhere yesterday that they will turn this into a movie. Wonder if it will be a trilogy. I'm sure the movies won't do the books justice.

I'm about halfway through the second book. I'm not surprised a movie will be made based on the series. I'll be intrigued to see it.

Finished book 3, Mockingjay, of the Hunger Games Trilogy. Excellent series and all 3 books were great reads.

The next book I'm going to read is Unbroken: A World War II Story of Suvival, Resiliance, and Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand.

Hopefully it gets here this week.

I just finished an excellent, yet somewhat jumbled (in a good way) fantasy series The Malazan Books of the Fallen.

Ten books in the series and only once did the story not really advance much. I will say it was jarring twice when the author change locales and introduced COMPLETELY new casts of characters. In the end though it generally pulled together but there were a couple things that I was curious about the author left open. It was one of those cases where a character played his part in the narrative and was no longer a necessary cog moving forward.

I'm moving on now to Brandon Sanderson's beginning **** the Way of Kings. I hope he jumps on continuing it after he finishes completing Robert Jordan's final wheel of time novel. But writing those monstrous books takes quite a bit of time.

Can you tell I like my fantasy epics?

Lost my Kindle on a plane.

I don't really want to spend the $ on buying another one but I had a heap of books on my account and it's hard to go back to reading 'normal' books now I have experienced the goodness that is the Kindle. Not sure what to do.....
