If you're talking decent whisky (minus the E of course) that is affordable then Crown Royal is the standard for a bottle under $30 IMO.

Phobia did mention Crown Royal XR (Extra Rare) and I happen to have an unopened bottle of it in my cabinet right now that I picked up a few months ago and am just saving for the right occasion. I didn't pay $190 for my bottle though, I find a source that has them for $131.95 which is a steal so I might pick up another bottle or two before they're gone because 37 year old, high-quality Canadian whisky doesn't grown on trees anymore!

I'm a big fan of the Crown Royal Whiskey's. I have yet to get a chance to try the No.16 with is suppose to be one of the best tasting whiskey's on the market(And it has vanilla in it, which is my favorite).

If you get the good ice cubes and just add alil water whiskey is great for sipping.

The CR Cask No. 16 is excellent, but the XR is still quite a bit better. They are two completely different animals though.

I'm not a big Scotch drinker though, I never acquired a taste for it I guess but there are literally over 1000 brands of Scotch that absolutely destroy any American whiskey, bourbon or sour mash garbage that the average troglodyte consumes at their local pub on a nightly basis.

Think I'm a snob when it comes to whisky? You should see me in the beer thread!

P.S. If your whiskey is so crappy that you need to mix it with anything besides a glass, rocks or a splash of water, then you should probably really consider upping your standards.
Ouch. I have been dis-limbed. I'm a pizza snob so my skin is hard. I'll have to do some research on what differentiates the good and bad.

I agree with Dislimb though. Jim and and jack are pretty much your budlight/ coors of the Whiskey world. They are mass produced crap. Plus cheaper boubon will give worst hangovers. This was proven in a study done by which they compared the compounds that are in each.

Your cheaper the bourbon the less quality distilled it will be. Resulting in high amounts of acetone. Which then result in worst hangovers.

But even quality scotch, Irish, and American whiskey suffer from the same issues. The general rule is the darker the drink the more substances will be in the drink that cause adverse effects.

With all that said. Makers, Crown XR, Crown #16, etc are considered higher quality for a reason. They are lol. I can sip on a glass of Crown XR on the rocks all night and have zero taste issues with it. Try that with a bottle of Jim and I will want to puke my guts up.

All Whiskey will have the alcohol burn to them straight. But it is the quality Whisky that can balance spice, flavor, aroma, high ABV, and alcohol burn in a subtle enjoyable taste. This is what you pay for. Aged, Whisky that packs the punch but not on your taste buds. Instead gives you a enjoyable burn with wonderful mouth feel and flavor.

Speaking of which I picked up a bottle of that Buffalo Trace on my way home from work yesterday. I sip on two glasses of it straight over the rocks and WOW what a drink. Smooth with some hints of caramel, a wonderful spicy pallet, and a great burn that is not overwhelming.

I suggest you guys give it a shot. For $23 a fifth, it is a excellent quality to price ratio

I actually like Beam. It's certainly not preferred to premier whiskeys but as a cost effective choice, I will take it over any of the other bottom shelf whiskeys.

When I first saw this thread, I thought it was this thread that got bumped:

              http://www.operationsports.com/forum...hlight=whiskey

Funny, most people in thread were in that one as well.

Hmm..I posted in that thread. Woodford Reserve then...Woodford Reserve now.

I'll have to try it out. I don't know that our store here will sell it. In NC we have ABC stores and they tend to be limited.

Plus these is always the its happy hour somewhere excuse as well.

                    I love me some whiskey.

I like Canadian club or Canadian club classic as my cheaper alternative and drink Chivas regal or Dimple if i'm feeling like spending a little more.

I've never even tried a very expensive scotch, bourbon or whiskey (anything over $100 per bottle).

Whiskey fights? Nah...I'm normally calm, cool, collected, and very thoughtful when it comes to whiskey.

Jagermeister, on the other hand, has never passed my lips without me making someone bleed that night.

[and I do so love Jager, a shame it results in what it does, up to and including the eviction of my college roomate two days BEFORE our first year began]

                          Big bump.

Picked up a bottle of this stuff as a Christmas present to myself:

I've tried to drink whiskey straight for a long time, to try and get the enjoyment out of it that I know is there. I've tried Glenlivet, Woodford Reserve, and other higher rated whiskey. However, this is the smoothest I have had the pleasure of tasting. I usually give up on whiskey after a few sips and crack open a beer, but not with this stuff. I suppose it's how sweet it is on the tongue, and given that it's twice mellowed compared to the old No. 7, it definitely goes down smoother. Hopefully I can use this as a jumping off point to enjoying some other whiskeys as well.

For an everyday drinking whiskey you can't beat Jack Daniel's but if you want to spend a little $ every now and then you can't go wrong with Johnny Walker Green, Gold, Or Blue.

I had some Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve last night, it's pretty strong at 120 proof, but it tastes great with a little water.
