My new reason to hate the Post Office

After going through different transactions to take care of varying packages (not to mention the time to package and label everything), I go to pay for my transaction (around $23) at my friendly neighborhood post office when the clerk hands my card back to me and says, "I'm sorry but it is our policy that we cannot take a credit card that is not signed" (mine has "ask for Photo I.D." on it... ya know, for some security purposes). I think I literally said "you must by joking." There was nothing I could do. Even tough little general looking supervisor who was listening in on our conversation said it was policy for several months. I stated, "well it should be posted somewhere". "Oh, we had it posted for some time, but it is not anymore." Ya....this was going to go nowhere. I even offered to sign it there and then they could match it to my signature on my driver's license. But no. I even mentioned "you can do this online and no one is going to ask you for a signature doing a transaction that way (implying, not even the Post Office).

You know what's real funny about this. I could go through my self-check-out grocery store line.... buy $400 worth of groceries, swipe my credit card and sign it "Elmer Fudd" and there wouldn't be a problem.

So, here's the lesson boys and girls.... in this day and age of identity theft and electronic ripoffs, your United States Governmental Post Office wants you to have signed credit cards, that, if ripped off, would give the crook a copy of your signature. Ahhhh, the idiocy that IS the P.O.

Searching now for my local UPS offices.........

Man I haven't been asked for my ID when using a credit card much less been told I had to sign the back. I've never even signed the back of a credit card before. But this type of lunacy, especially at this time of the year should be fully expected by the post office, I send out a lot of stuff for eBay and I've run into all types of stupidity from them. I usually use the flat rate shipping boxes and somehow even those lead to hilarious and frustrating problems.
As Shaquille O'Neal left the Suns practice court, he yelled out, "Alvin's the coach. We must be the Clippers. And I must be Olowokandi. Nooooo!"

A little OT, but I hate when places don't ask for ID when using a credit/debit card.

When I was in retail we were required to ask for ID for anyone using a credit card or using a debit card as a credit card.

I stood in line at the post office once for 10 minutes it got all the way up to me and 1 person ahead of me 1 behind me and the clerk looks at the time and says " Sorry it's time for my 10 minute break you'll have to come back" and walks off.

I'm working now for...ummm...one of the the competitors. If I did that, I'd probably be fired by now.

Wait a minute...that may work... I don't have the courage to leave (since I need a job), but then again, I feel like I'm dying slowly working there. I just need the store owner to kick me out...hmmm

I can't find a damn thing on the internet regarding any regulation about this. I can find all kinds of documents written by the USPS, but there is nothing evident about using credit cards that aren't signed. I mean honestly. I could have walked out to my car, grabbed a pen, signed it, came back in (or gone to another post office) and ACCORDING TO POLICY, should have been able to use my cc. Maybe they should spend less time on things, like, oh, writing 60 page documents about accessing your P.O. box and more on COMMON SENSE!

I'm not sure why this is a big deal. If it's policy it's policy. If they don't follow policy then they could get fired or even sued. You must not work for the government but you have to follow policy.

Because EVERY other place I can go to and make a purchase will take my credit card, ask for my photo ID and complete the transaction. Plus, I'm not supposed to be aware of every policy put in place by the USPS. If one of the most common ways to pay for something is done in an altered method, then POST IT on the door, a sign in the lobby, anything! I could see if it's something obscure, but this is certainly common.

This is why people have trouble with a government run agency..... they typically don't follow common sense and are full of inefficencies! UPS, FedEx, etc. would gladly take my card sans signature and conduct BUSINESS.

I swipe people's credit cards every day and never ask for an ID. It does bug me, but it's just not something I'm supposed to do.

It's been that policy at my post office for the past year or so. When it happened to me, I signed it in front of them and they accepted it.

I've worked at a couple retail locations and we were told that we can't accept cards that are not signed or cards that say "SEE ID" on them. I have no idea if that's a regulation throughout various companies or just the ones I've worked for.
