Re: My new reason to hate the Post Office
Ok I read this thread early this morning, and I agreed with the OP. How strict can one place be when it comes to Credit Cards and purchasing small items and such. Like the OP said, there are many places we can easily make $100 purchases, without a single time being asked for an ID.
HOWEVER, after much thought, I have to side with the Post Office on this one. Unfortunately it seems everything nowadays is related to terrorism in some way or form. I think this is one of them. I'm not trying to make this an arguement about terrorism, so Mods please don't think I'm steering this converation away from topic.
With all the packages being sent out this holiday season, it would be easy for a person, with terrible intent to use someone else's credit card to send out malicious packages. So even though you have an "Ask for an ID" which most of us have on the back of our card, it's a policy that I respect the Post Office for believing in.
You can argue why the post office just didn't ask for an ID, but I believe that ID's are easily faked these days, and the eyes of the workers at a post office are not trained to spot fake ID's.
Just my take on it.Comment

Let's go with the terrorist situation here...
So the post office doesn't take cards with out a signature. Ok, anyone with a 3rd grade writing level can forge a signature. Trust me, I had to forge a few Citizenship reports back in elementary school... But anyways, it doesn't even matter how well you forge the signature, because most places don't even check IDs. So they have no idea what the real signature would look like anyways.
I was actually in the post office a week ago, and all I did was hand my card over to the clerk, and that was that. He turned over the card to see if it was signed(my card is) and swiped the card for me. The clerk has no idea if that is actually my signature or not. If I was that terrorist, I would be in and out with no problems whatsoever.
Though what if my card had said "See I.D." Well then the clerk(unless they're just lazy) would have to check my I.D. Unless I went through the trouble of producing a fake I.D., I'm out of luck at that point.
If anything, having check ID on the back of your card is much safer. Because in many cases, your are ensuring that the clerk actually takes some sort of step to verify your identity.
Maybe I'm just missing something here... but I just don't see the problem with putting that on the back of your card instead of a sig.Last edited by Jgainsey; 12-22-2010, 10:38 PM.Now, more than everComment

Re: My new reason to hate the Post Office
I never use sanitary hand and I haven't had the flu in years and years. A few small colds here and there, but that's to be expected. "Antibacterial" is a giant marketing ploy with no solid scientific support.Comment

Re: My new reason to hate the Post Office
If you wash your hands it's the same difference but who wants to always be looking for a place to wash your hands with soap and water after touching these sorts of surfaces? If you're not going out of your way to massage the money in your hands, then intentionally sucking on your fingers, the benefits are going to be nil. It's good that anti-bacterial stuff puts your mind at ease, but it's just typically not necessary in the course of daily activities. You appear to need it for more than strictly a physical benefit, most people don't.Member of The OS Baseball Rocket Scientists AssociationComment

Re: My new reason to hate the Post Office
Well the problem is most people will touch the money, then at some point touch their eyes or face in some fashion. That's how you get sick. Door knobs are the same way. I always use my shirt or put on gloves to open doors. My favorite sort of door is one that pushes out, so you can avoid touching with your hand entirely.Streaming PC & PS5 games, join me most nights after 6:00pm ET on TwitchTV https://www.twitch.tv/shaunh20

Re: My new reason to hate the Post Office
Here is explanations behind See ID or Signing...
'See ID' against Visa, MasterCard rules
Chris Monteiro, spokesman for MasterCard, says, "Technically, a MasterCard is not valid unless signed by the authorized cardholder. If a person has not signed his card, the merchant technically should not complete the transaction." The merchant can only complete the transaction on an unsigned card if the cardholder signs the card in front of the employee and then produces valid identification proving their identity, Monteiro says. The cardholder then has nothing to gain by refusing to write anything but his signature on the signature panel.
Visa's policy is nearly identical to MasterCard's. Visa covers this topic in its "Rules for Merchants" handbook. There is a section entitled "See ID," which says: "See ID or Check for ID is not a valid substitute for a signature. The customer must sign the card, in your presence." And if the customer refuses? "A refusal to sign means the card is still invalid and cannot be accepted." The handbook then reminds merchants that if they ignore this mandate and accept an unsigned card anyway, they risk financial liability should the cardholder later dispute the charge.
In another section, the Visa handbook also prohibits merchants from demanding identification as a condition of the sale -- so if the merchant does accept your unsigned card, they technically cannot force you to show identification. The converse is true for signed cards as well: A merchant cannot refuse a transaction if you choose not to produce identification, and a merchant does not have to ask for additional identification when presented a signed credit card.Last edited by EnigmaNemesis; 12-23-2010, 09:44 PM.Ⓥ Boston Red Sox | Miami DolphinsComment

Stupidity on that person's part. Don't paint all government employees with such a broad brush. A vast majority of us put in an honest day's work and do our best to serve the people who pay our salary.Comment

You should be able to sign right there and it should be valid."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace
