lol I was like that with Hurricane Alex last year, just because it's my name so I thought it might be cool to have a destructive hurricane named after me. I'm weird.

          Re: Hurricane Irene

This morning the local weather said that the track is starting to pinpoint itself to the wilmington nc area and then up over or just to the east of raleigh nc. Now when I say storm I don't mean the western edge, I mean the center of circulation. They did say that the models that were taking the the hurricane further east with each update have stopped doing that, and for the time being the track is remaining the same. The other disheartening thing is that they said the storm could now reach cat-4 status before making landfall.

You would think I would learn never to listen to the local weather people. As soon as they say it looks like the trend for the storm to move further east has stopped, the track moves further east. I do realize these storms are very unpredictable and that the entire southeastern seaboard is at risk until the thing is completely gone.

It keeps curving east, which is good so long as it eventually launches iself out to sea. As it is now it might be at it's worst path though, it looks like it would hit a lot of the east coast at this point.

This thing is shaping up to be kinda a beast at this point. Hope everyone in the Carolinas and that area make it through safe! We'll get a bit of it here but not like you guys will.

Hey GiGGAS, I am in Williamsburg VA. I think you guys might be in store for som rain and wind, but I would not think anything severe.

We however are praying and crossing anything we can cross. Isabelle was a tropical storm when she hit us and flooded the entire town and we did not have power or water for 2 weeks.

                            Re: Hurricane Irene

This thing has the potential to hooktail out to sea, but it will likely cause problems in the Carolinas and the Virginia Tidewater. There is also the distinct possibility that it could stay offshore (or maybe just graze the Outer Banks of NC) and head up into the NE, making landfall in NY or MA, which would certainly would be interesting.

Regardless, it looks like the placement won't be similar to Hugo as I had thought a few days ago. It looks like Myrtle Beach or so is about as far south as I would put the cone now, though anywhere from Myrtle Beach to Cape Cod has the potential for hurricane force winds depending on where Irene makes landfall. The geography of the East Coast is set up in such a way that just a small deviation in track could mean the storm makes landfall hundreds of miles north or south of the expected location, so it's really hard to pinpoint.

Of course, the storm could make landfall in NC, then head back out to sea before making another landfall in the NE (though the time over land would have weakened it quite a bit).

The latest run of the GFS had Irene staying just offshore of NC (maybe grazing Cape Hatteras) before making landfall in eastern Long Island.

No telling where this thing will end up. Someone was telling me today that several years ago there was a hurricane very similar to this one and they were forecasting it to hook and go out to sea. So everyone let there guard down and it never hooked, it plowed right into the wilmington nc area. So I'll still be preparing for the worst until this thing is gone.
