Re: Hurricane Irene
Well me and the fam are evacuating sometime today. Our house flooded 2 years ago, and it's not looking good. This thing is no joke. Don't take this storm lightly. Seen too many in my 33 years of living in Va. Pray that I don't come home to 2 feet of water in my house like last time.Redskins, Lakers, Orioles, UNC Basketball , and ND Football

Re: Hurricane Irene
My friend was back home from the beach yesterday, met up with him and he's now staying around here. He's a really smart guy, he was just fascinated with being there, but clearer minds have prevailed; it's just going to be way too dangerous to be there. Delaware (as well as New Jersey) is under a state of emergency already. Evacuations have been called for in lower Delaware, where the beaches are.
Supposed to be here tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon, and get worse into Sunday. I'm expecting loss of power for a week. We've gone over getting candles, water, got some food, got these ice pack things that stay cold for a long time.
Next few days are going to be really dreary. It's great we're getting such a large warning, but it sucks waiting for the storm to hit.
I don't think I'm going to work on Saturday. I'm scheduled 5PM to 11PM, it could be fine when I go in but I don't think so by the time I'll be out. I live 3 minutes from the store, I walk there, so I'm kind of stuck in the middle. Our store stayed open for all the snowfall this past winter too but I'm thinking this is going to be too intense. Probably won't have power by halfway through my shift anyway.NHL - Philadelphia Flyers

Re: Hurricane Irene
Weather Underground provides information about tropical storms and hurricanes for locations worldwide. Use hurricane tracking maps, 5-day forecasts, computer models and satellite imagery to track storms.
data from NOAA and Air Force Reserve hurricane hunter aircraft
suggest the intensity of Irene is slightly lower. Although peak
flight-level winds at 700 millibars were 128 mph...Dropsonde
observations indicated that a higher-than-typical reduction of the
wind from flight-level to the surface applies...and the initial
intensity is reduced to 105 mph. Given the current storm structure
and predicted environmental factors...little change in strength is
expected during the next 12 to 24 hours. After passing North
Carolina...southwesterly shear is forecast to increase and sea
surface temperatures will be gradually decreasing. This should
result in gradual weakening of the cyclone as it moves near the
mid-Atlantic coast. However...Irene is expected to remain a large
and dangerous tropical cyclone and has the potential to produce
damaging winds...storm surge flooding...and extremely heavy rains
almost anywhere from eastern North Carolina northward through New
England.
Irene is moving northward at 13 mph. There has been no change
to the forecast philosophy. Irene should move northward for another
12 hours or so....followed by a gradual turn to the north-northeast
as it moves along the East Coast of the United States. The track
guidance is in good agreement on this scenario and no change was
required from the previous NHC forecast through 72 hours.
Only a small adjustment was made to the Hurricane Warning on this
advisory. It is anticipated that the Hurricane Warning and watch
areas will need to be extended northward along the U.S. East Coast
this afternoon.Comment

Re: Hurricane Irene
This thing could cripple the economy. Even if many lives are spared, the damage to structures will be overwhelming.
Best advice I can give you, if you are told to evacuate, do so. Your physical belongings can be replaced, but your lives can't. Don't even try to "ride it out." I went through a hurricane with 90 mph winds and feel fortunate to be here.
My thoughts are with all of you.Last edited by LingeringRegime; 08-26-2011, 12:22 PM.Comment

Re: Hurricane Irene
Good to see it is slightly weaker than expected. Still is a dangerous situation and will cause billions in damage.
Good luck to all of the OS East Coasters.Ryan Spencer

Re: Hurricane Irene
As it stands now, the area of NC that I live in is expecting 1-2 inches of rain and tropical storm force winds. Which isn't bad but knowing the area I live in, we will lose some trees and power will go out. The power will probably stay out for at least a couple days because the power companies will have to focus on the major power outages that will occur in eastern NC. Good luck to everyone that's in the direct path.Battle.net: xXKING08Xx

Re: Hurricane Irene
What's the word on the DC Area as far as this storm goes? I still need to head back to NY to finish unpacking the rest of my stuff but if they're going to get hit with the worst of this, would it make more sense for me just to stick down here in DC for a few more days or is there still a possibility where the path could change and NY not get hit as hard?Comment
