LOL........the benefits of living in a small town in a mountainous area where all the houses are spread out. Most of the people in this town don't even lock their house doors at all.

Crime is pretty much non existent in this town.

Usually, I don't care for motorcycle drivers but it is always a great sight to see the first one on the road at the beginning of spring.

My ultimate pleasure in my life is hearing my 5 year old son talk. He was diagnosed with autism two and half years ago. For those who are not familiar with Autism it is a developmental disorder which includes impaired communication and social skills.

Before his diagnosis he did not speak a word, was not toilet trained, would not approach people and would play with toys inappropriately (no imaginative play). For example instead of driving dinky cars he would spin them on the roof over and over again. He was obsessed with ceiling fans and would want all the lights on ALL the time.

Since his diagnosis he has been working with speech pathologists and early interventionists. Last September he was chosen to take part in EIBI (Early Intesive Behaviour Intervention) with the Children's hospital. A 12 month program where for 3 hours a day, 5 days a week 3 different therapists work with him. They help with playing with toys correctly, speech, reading, interacting with other children. They go to his pre-school and to the playgrounds, etc. They will go anywhere with you where you feel your child has anxiety. He was scared to death of swimming pools and even going down slides.

Since EIBI kicked in 6 months ago I can proudly say my son is:

            Speaking 1, 2 3 and 4 word sentences.
            Plays with other kids.
            LOVES the swimming pool!
            LOVES slides.
The obsession with ceiling fans and lights has disappeared completely.
            He is toilet trained.
Knows Santa Claus and can open presents on his own. His first 4 x-mas's he flipped out during every one of his photos with Santa. This last x-mas he ran right over to him called him by name and gave him a high five. An unbelievable feeling.
Every one that works with him say he has improved immensely and we cannot even begin to express our gratitude to all the help we have received thus far. They tell us he is more than ready for school and we have enrolled him in Primary for September.
            THAT...is all kinds of awesome.
Can you smile and tear up at the same time?
            I just did I think.

Amazing and incredible! Hopefully progress keeps on coming! Makes me proud to say I've raised some money for the my nearest Children's Hospital.

Re: The Pleasures of Life Thread

St. Patrick's Day in Rolla, MO. It's the place to be if you live in Missouri.

This is more a response to the "Grinds My Gears" thread, but I feel a slight history lesson fits in this post better than over there.

Where I live, there is definitely a lot of drinking, but I believe we celebrate St. Pat's more for the tradition it has within the community and university. It's not entirely about Ireland or the Irish. Actually, I feel that is one of the last reasons we celebrate St. Pat's in Rolla. S&T's site about the celebrations.

These traditions date back 104 years, St. Patrick's court, the shillelaghs, the parade, the snakes, the Follies... I admit I don't know everything about it because I don't attend the university. One of the reasons celebrations started and continue today is that St. Patrick is the patron saint of engineers. The school is world famous engineering school and Ft. Leonard Wood is just 30 minutes away, which is home to the Army Corps of Engineering School.

It's true that St. Patrick's Day/Weekend is larger than Christmas in Rolla. It is also, more or less, the homecoming of the entire city. High School students, S&T alumni, people who got out of town... The local Parish is also named after St. Patrick.

                            Accomplishing something, anything.

A major project at work, cleaning the garage, making a new dinner recipe, learning something new...

See a challenge, take it on, defeat it and move on to the next one.

Nice weather. I find the older I get the more a beautiful day puts me in a great mood.

Driving a manual transmission. I have a 2005 Altima with 130k miles on it, nearly as many scratches and dings on it and I still love the simple task of driving a stick.

Seeing the wifey truly happy. I swear I don't see it often enough.

When you are fortunate enough to be able to buy a new "chair and a half" and your wife says, "We need to break that in later tonight."
Being kind, one to another, never disappoints.
