I like this one. For me I grew up with this and can remember sitting on my front steps just taking things in. I don't quite have that feeling on our current home, mainly because I feel like I'm always working on it and can't quite settle in. But, I do time to time experience what you describe.

          Good one.

Re: The Pleasures of Life Thread

I've never discussed this on OS before this post.

My ultimate pleasure in my life is hearing my 5 year old son talk. He was diagnosed with autism two and half years ago. For those who are not familiar with Autism it is a developmental disorder which includes impaired communication and social skills.

Before his diagnosis he did not speak a word, was not toilet trained, would not approach people and would play with toys inappropriately (no imaginative play). For example instead of driving dinky cars he would spin them on the roof over and over again. He was obsessed with ceiling fans and would want all the lights on ALL the time.

Since his diagnosis he has been working with speech pathologists and early interventionists. Last September he was chosen to take part in EIBI (Early Intesive Behaviour Intervention) with the Children's hospital. A 12 month program where for 3 hours a day, 5 days a week 3 different therapists work with him. They help with playing with toys correctly, speech, reading, interacting with other children. They go to his pre-school and to the playgrounds, etc. They will go anywhere with you where you feel your child has anxiety. He was scared to death of swimming pools and even going down slides.

Since EIBI kicked in 6 months ago I can proudly say my son is:

                  Speaking 1, 2 3 and 4 word sentences.
                  Plays with other kids.
                  LOVES the swimming pool!
                  LOVES slides.
The obsession with ceiling fans and lights has disappeared completely.
                  He is toilet trained.
Knows Santa Claus and can open presents on his own. His first 4 x-mas's he flipped out during every one of his photos with Santa. This last x-mas he ran right over to him called him by name and gave him a high five. An unbelievable feeling.
Every one that works with him say he has improved immensely and we cannot even begin to express our gratitude to all the help we have received thus far. They tell us he is more than ready for school and we have enrolled him in Primary for September.

I do on the job training as my job in the Navy and seeing my students show up and not being able to associate theory with real world or have the ability to stand watch. Then 16 weeks later they have a good basic understanding of everything and can proficiently stand watch as they get sent out to the fleet.
