Re: The Pleasures of Life Thread

Getting unlimited internet plan for the first time in my life! Canadian telecommunications (and digital things like streaming) is something I'd say is drastically worse than USA.

Americans probably can't relate as much since I think most if not all on regular internet plans have been unlimited usage, but in Canada for so many years they've had limits. I've never gone over mine or anything, but I've also been cautious with my limits. Won't watch Youtube videos in 1080p(opting for 720p instead since 1080p size is almost double).

For a few years now Canada has had unlimited in packages, but it's becoming more common now, and I got a new plan and package with this. Also cut out some TV channels I don't watch(only 1 of all I cut out I actually watch sometimes, but can add on better version of it anytime anyways).

No data cap anymore! Can stream as much as I want, whenever I want. Netflix so much more often and other stuff too. Speeds also supposed to go up but I haven't noticed it much.

All that, and managed to pay way less than before simply by playing hardball with them.

Same here, finally got unlimited usage for the first time ever within the last month. It legitimately took me a week to get used to the fact that I had no limits lol, had to break some habits built in to control data, reminding myself it's ok to stream nonstop if I want

Will be weird at first getting use to it. Even in the past I'd hold off on updating apps I got until I'm elsewhere. Why use up a few hundred MB when I could wait a day or two.

Before streaming was normal, my limit was 120gb(4gb a day on average) and then bumped to 250gb. For reference, Netflix I believe is 1GB an hour for SD, 3GB an hour for HD. Add in regular internet usage and it adds up quick.

I also wanna try streaming tv channels now too using their apps. See if the channels casted through Chromecast on an unlimited plan that's more than double my old speed might actually show better than those same channels on cable.

No we have data limits here, at least where I'm at in Louisiana. I upgraded a couple years ago though to unlimited. I think the limit was 300GB a month which isn't much if you download most games from the stores plus streaming apps you'll kill that pretty easily.

I pay $70 a month for 200 meg and unlimited vs 50 meg and 300gb and that was $50.

I always thought most people in USA had no home internet limits. I saw a poll years back asking about this and I think minus Canada and Australia, most others said they didn't.

Just trying to get better connections now. New plan is supposed to be faster, but I haven't noticed a difference. Netflix runs fine with no lags, so don't know why some stuff isn't perfect too. Got best modem my isp provides, and I'm close by too. Casting videos on Chromecast is hit or miss at times in terms of speed and quality, except Netflix and YouTube which are fine.

And weird thing is that phones don't always connect the best here either. Tablet and laptops are fine. If someone comes over, their phone doesn't always get best connection for whatever reason, even if standing right by modem.

Are they logging in as a guest? Do you have any of the settings prioritized for certain devices? If you have one device prioritized over another that device will get less bandwidth. I'd reset your modem and router at least once a week if you do a lot of online gaming. Those would be my guesses but there are way more tech savvy people here than me.

They all login on same connection as me. I've never had issues with my devices, but their phones seem worse at connecting. Laptops connect the best. I don't even know if there's an option to set device priority.

Well if you don't know if there is an option then that eliminates that. You'd have had to login into the router and change it.

If they haven't restarted their phones in a while that could do it. I've had that issue when I haven't restarted mine in long time it'll drop and and get weak signal.

That could be a reason. I know people who never shut down stuff. My stuff gets shut down daily.

But even then, their phone connection seems weak. I see one or two bars even on phones that just started up. Speed test on all non computers comes off slow, though Chromecast works fine from these devices.

I'm thinking it's something within the walls or floors perhaps dampening the signals. This has been a long occurring issues mainly with phones. Even people who use their data and not WiFi here seems to get weaker signals.

Is your router dual band.? Are they connecting to the 2.4ghz or 5ghz signal? 2.4ghz will have stronger signal for a wider radius but less bandwidth. 5ghz will not have as big of a radius but provides way more bandwidth.

What do you mean by more(or less) bandwidth?

I use 2.4 on mine, and I think some devices go on 2.4, and some on 5.

The amount of data. I have 200 meg internet. With my Asus router on the 2.4 band I can only get around 50 megs but a stronger signal over a wider radius. On the 5ghz signal ill get the full 200 or very close to it but the signal will get weaker sooner.

Not all devices will have the ability to connect to 5ghz Like entry level smartphones, older laptops and and smart tv's.

So 2.4 means not as fast but wider radius, and 5 means faster, but smaller radius?

It's not a wide radius to begin with, but it is different floors, so perhaps that has something to do with it? Although I've tried standing next to modem at times too and it doesn't seem to make difference.

                                Watching old family videos.

Yes, I still have a VHS player too lol. Gotta convert them to digital one day, but wanna do it myself instead of paying someone/handing over valuable tapes. Enjoy that more than just looking at pictures. Though sucks looking at videos seeing quality then VS now. Childhood captured on a camcorder with basic quality. Nowadays you can capture every moment instantly in hd. No wonder people take so many videos and pics of their kids.

And of course if someone isn't around anymore, having it on video, getting to remember them as more than just you can from pictures.

My fave is Christmas video. Was almost like a typical Christmas day video. Presents and everything early Christmas morning, and other family visiting later in the day(including them walking through the front door with presents) , all while Christmas music played in background.
