    Re: OS Firearms Thread

Went shooting with a buddy a couple of months ago and loved it. I'm waiting to hear back from the range for the class I'm looking to sign up for. I know nothing, and that day was my only experience. In NH, you only need a license for concealed carry, and I hear its pretty easy to get (apply to your town/city's police office, and they do a background check). I won't be getting a concealed permit, but I'm looking forward to the class.

I'm thinking of getting either a .22 or a .40 to start off, kinda leaning toward the .22

Like I said before, to start, go with a .22. I've got a .22 and a .40, and as said before, you can buy 500 plus round of 22 for 15 bucks. You'll pay the same for 50 rounds of .40 caliber ammo.

It sounds as though you're looking for something to go plinking with, not carry. In that case, it's a no brainer. Not to mention, you can find a high quality 22 pistol (Ruger Mark III/Browning Buckmark) for 300 bucks.

I am not a huge fan of concealed permits as most people in the world are idiots, I personally think the risk/reward is not worth it.

I do like my long guns, I have a AK, Remington 700, Mossberg 500, and a Ithaca model 40(my grandpa brought this home from the war).

I bought a Smith & Wesson M&P9 last year and I love it. Feels really good in my hand and so far hasn't given me any issues with jamming or anything like that.

Question for you guys who are more experienced. Do you shoot with one eye closed or both eyes open? I was talking to someone at the range who is a pretty good shot and he said he shoots with both open. It was difficult for me to get a focus on the target when I tried that way.

And that'll buy about a dozen .50 Beowulf, but I'll be damned if it's not a blast to shoot. Plus everybody looks at you like they did Robocop at the range. Here is a comparison pic with a 5.56 Nato.

            Fired from a revolver, BTW.

Both open.....but go with what ever is more comfortable for you. Everybody is different.

Warning: This might be a little nerdy but I'll try to keep it just informational.

Our dominant hand is not always our dominant eye. With luck you're same dominant. Most people are and those people find it easy to shoot with both eyes open because their dominant eye is the same side of the body they are shooting from so the brain makes the adjustments much easier.

I'm right handed but left eye dominant and I shoot with a squinted left eye to force my right eye to get most of the input. I've tried and tried to shoot with both eyes open and can't get all the way there.

To test your eye dominance, hold both arms out palms away from you and put your hands together so that a hole is formed between your thumbs and index fingers. Now look at something 10-20 feet away through that hole. Close one eye and then the other without moving your hands. Which ever eye sees the object through the hole is your dominant eye.

It depends on the scope/optic your using. Iron sights or a scope- one eye closed, A Eotech or a red dot, both open. I would not worry about firing with both eyes open as it is more advanced and it's only use if for when people are firing back at you.

I guess I'll post some of my collection:

Henry Survival .22 with modifications, including a RDS, for target practice
30 30 Marlin, lever action rifle.
                    Springfield .40 XD
                    Highpoint 9mm (cheap)

I have a few more, including some hunting rifles and shotguns.

Honestly, I rarely shoot any of my guns.. favorite to shoot is the Henry Survival .22. I have a few hundred tied up in the gun. it really looks like a mini AR, yet you could squirrel hunt with it.. lol.
Quoting from a few days ago, but the more I look into the Henry Survival Rifle, the more I want one. It's the one that breaks down and snaps back into place, correct? Seems like it would be convenient for camping trips, but also fun to plink with.

How is that Henry to shoot? Always wondered...in vids I've seen looks like it kicks very little? VERY nice!

My wife and I love our guns. She's a little better shot than I am, too.

Springfield MilSpec 1911 .45 (her favorite. She's petite but she can drive nails with this thing)

My baby is my .30 .30, love that gun. Killed my first deer with it and it's reliable as hell.

My dad uses a 300 Winchester Mag and man does that have some kick to it. Destroyed my shoulder first time I used it. His brother has the 300 Winchester Ultra Mag.....I shudder to think how much worse it is every time they tell me story's about it.

Yeah, its a fun little gun to shoot. I have an extended clip and red dot scope on it and a replacement stock. You can take it and buy all kinds of add ons for cheap. When I feel like Target practicing in the back yard, without wasting more expensive ammo, I usually get it out.
