    Re: OS Firearms Thread

I'm not a gun guy yet (and maybe never), but I have gone to a range a few times and shot some handguns (when I was with groups).

I have to admit, the rush you get when you're popping off shots at the target is such a thrill. Add in the competitive nature of wanting to aim well and it was amazingly fun.

Always tempted to get a target shooter sometime but can never justify it given other things we'd rather spend money on.

I was a glock guy for a while, but I sold mine and bought the xd40 Springfield, when I finally got a pistol permit.

Just see what feels most comfortable to you.. everyone is different.

Ive only been able to legally carry for close to two years (turn 23 in a few months) and that's my usual choice for the glove box. That or a 9mm. I work in Birmingham now and while its not the worst place in the world, I feel a bit better when driving downtown. I'll gladly put a hole through my driver side door, before someone comes at me through the window.

This. I use a Glock 19 (9mm). 16 rounds, night sights, and extremely reliable.

But...I do tend to prefer pocket-carrying my S&W 642 in a Nemesis pocket holster. It's a revolver, so reliable as they come, small, lightweight, and five shots of .38 Golden Sabres. It's just easier and less fuss than dealing with the IWB holster and my Glock most days. Plus, with the pocket gun, I can stroll around with my hand already on the S&W's grip and in certain areas of Memphis that's damn reassuring.

I know...the Glock has a lot more rounds for a firefight. But I figure five shots is better than zero, and the .38 is a much nastier gun in close-in fighting which most mugging situations are. If I really need more than that, I was outgunned to begin with no matter what I had with me.

I agree with the personal preference part, my wife and I both have concealed carry permits and she swears with the Glock 26 (9mm) while I live by the XD45... it all comes down to comfort and accuracy. You need to realize if there ever was an event to draw your pistol your adrenaline would be pounding, so you need something that you could fire in rapid succession, accurately, and minimizing collateral damage.

I think I am going to go with the Glock 23 4th gen, compact with the .40 round.

It sounds as though you're looking for something to go plinking with, not carry. In that case, it's a no brainer. Not to mention, you can find a high quality 22 pistol (Ruger Mark III/Browning Buckmark) for 300 bucks.
I've been looking online, and I'm thinking either a Sig Mosquito or a Browning 1911-22. I don't like the look of the Mark III (of course, this could be different once I get them in my hands). Right now, the range where I want to take the class doesn't have any that fit my work schedule, so it's like a huge tease to be looking at all these guns.

Sig has a huge plant and store in NH (about 30 minutes from me), so that's a plus. But I'm sure it would be easy to find the 1911-22 as well, haven't done that side of the research yet.

Good choice, that's what I'm saving up for. It's also the FBI's service gun.

The only thing the M4 has going for it is cool factor, I honestly do not think it is a very good gun. The 5.56 round is a good round for anything over 200 meters, anything closer it's just going to be a through and through(that idiot in CO did not do his homework, if I had to get shot, I would want to get shot with a M4 variant).

I would personally go with a AK variant if you want something fun to shoot, it is better in just about every way(except long range accuracy and even that can be debatable).

As a Marine of almost nine years I have rifle qualified six times and never anything less than expert, I've never had a problem shooting a torso sized silhouette at 500 yards (457.2m).

But honestly if you were buying an M4 it would be based on coolness factor (all the sexy add-ons/attachments, the different types of butt stocks available, colored picattiny rail sleeves etc.) there are many better accurate rifles out there. I do agree that an AK varient is more fun to shoot, I cannot speak for its accuracy because I've never had much training with them.

That what I am saying, the M4/m16 variants have very good accuracy. For those interested in a little backround on the rifle: it was developed Immediatly after WWII so it was created to fight in a similar war. WWII was generally fought at around 300 meters so the m16 fit this mold perfectly. The problem many Vietnam/ OIF/ OEF vets came across was that they were fighting battles within 300 meters so they would pump 5 rounds into someone and they would keep running. Special Ops have been getting away from the m4 for the past few years, I want the gun they use since those are the real gun experts.

I don't know if you have seen a 5.56 exit wound vs a 7.62 exit wound, it is really a very big difference. I want the big gun that shoots grapefruit sized bullets.

Does anyone here reload? I miss reloading, it's going to be at least a year until I get to reload again, and I cannot wait to set up my reloading station.

I reload 45, 357/38 Special, 223/5.56, and even 9mm, I'm really not saving any money reloading 9mm but I do it anyways since I find reloading very relaxing and stress relieving!

Anyone (with a CCW permit) have experience with Remora holsters? Looking at getting one for my M&P Shield to carry with. They are basically clipless holsters that just slide into whatever position you prefer, and due to the fabric used, basically suction into place and don't move. Sounds like something that's too good to be true, but every review i've read has had nothing but positive things to say.

Just curious if anyone here has any experience. This is a picture of someone with the Shield holstered in a Remora:

There is a reason most swat teams and us special forces still overwhelmingly use m4's in CQB. Very light recoil, less wall penetration due to a fragmenting round, and a very respectable tempory wound channel compared to .30 Cal. There are few guns that pack as much punch as a 5.56 round while being very very easy to control. The stories of 5.56 going through and through like a hot .22 load are usually from Vietnam or the 90's (Somalia) in which the targets were extremely skinny and ammo was not up to snuff. Check out Dr. Gary Roberts ballastic tests and see how 5.56 compares to 7.62. I will admit I will be buying a 300 BLK upper soon but in a home defense situation I would much prefer my m4 chambered in 5.56 to a AK47.

                                Just my opinion of course.
