For home defense? Any pump action shotgun will do since the sound of pumping a round in the chamber is usually enough to scare away most intruders.

Re: OS Firearms Thread
That's what all my friends have told me. If you really want a home defense gun just get a great pump action shotgun that can hold a good number of rounds.
Any legit home invasion situation will be at close range, and a shotgun is by far the best at close range. Especially for your "normal" person at home who probably wouldn't be able to aim a handgun perfectly in those situations (stressed, someone with a gun, etc). Shotguns are simple and more forgiving on aiming.
Plus they scare the "f" out of a lot of random criminals, like you said.Last edited by mgoblue; 07-25-2012, 12:12 PM.Nintendo Switch Friend Code: SW-7009-7102-8818Comment

Re: OS Firearms Thread
If an intruder is not looking for a fight then sound of a shotgun or pistol racking or the bolt dropping on a AR15 or AK47 would all do the trick. Shotguns do make a fine home defense firearms. However, they require a lot of practice to be efficient with in high stress situations just like any firearm. I have heard a lot of internet myths how you don't have to aim them and they are idiot proof which are not true. Hell good hunters short stroke shotguns all the time while shooting at turkey's never mind being in a fight for your life. I personally use an AR15 for home defense because it's what I have the most trigger time with and I have taken several classes for using it in high stress situations. If I was using a shotgun I would do the same. Use what you are most comfortable with but if that intruder is not scared away by the sound of it racking you better know how to use it.

Very true about the shotguns, especially the 'dont have to aim well' myth.If an intruder is not looking for a fight then sound of a shotgun or pistol racking or the bolt dropping on a AR15 or AK47 would all do the trick. I took two classes for my 870. That thing is a pain in the *** to shoot, as I'm a lefty so the empties eject right in front of me. Also, I would jam up sometimes because when I shoot the slide would go back and sort of 'catch' the empty, my version of stove-piping on an 870 LOL.
However, I can shoot it quite well, and even I was surprised how little spread there is at about 10 feet (10 feet or closer will be your typical home defense range unless your house has ENORMOUS rooms). More like a 3" ragged hole gets punched in the paper targets. So...you gotta AIM, firing from the hip? Lotsa luck.
I think for a panic-filled situation, a coach gun would work better for a one-off. Both barrels, a bit more spread, no chance of a jam.
Just don't MISS.
That is all why I'd just reach for my Glock first. Most comfortable with it and it's reliable for me.GO 'HAWKS!

My only complaints about Glocks are the polygonal rifling in Glock barrels. It's no big deal if you only fire commercial rounds. I had to buy an after market barrel for my wifes Glock so we could use reloads for target practice. Honestly my reloads would probably have no trouble with the stock barrel but I'd rather not risk it, I'd gladly spend an extra $150 rather than ruin a $600 handgun!
The Glock19 does jam if you limp wrist it though, but the only person I know that limp wrists when shooting is my 11yr old daughter.
Besides those two minor complaints Glocks are indeed extremely reliable, you can throw it in the mud and it'll still shoot, hell it even shoots underwater! So it's been said, never actually tried it!

Sounds a little too good to be true, though please let us know how it works out for you because I'm a little curious about it now.Anyone (with a CCW permit) have experience with Remora holsters? Looking at getting one for my M&P Shield to carry with. They are basically clipless holsters that just slide into whatever position you prefer, and due to the fabric used, basically suction into place and don't move. Sounds like something that's too good to be true, but every review i've read has had nothing but positive things to say.
Just curious if anyone here has any experience. This is a picture of someone with the Shield holstered in a Remora:

Re: OS Firearms Thread
This happened a few months ago and I thought of this thread when someone sent me the link the other night.
I think this is a good example of what regular citizens with a concealed permit and some training can accomplish when it comes to saving lives in the general public.
Just remember, if you choose to intervene in a potentially deadly situation like this, you better be prepared to use lethal force if necessary. Not everyone is up to the task, even some people that carry weapons regularly.

Re: OS Firearms Thread
Agreed about Sig. My buddy uses a Sig P232 as his everyday carry weapon. I popped off a few rounds the last time we went out. It's arguably the most comfortable pistol I've ever handled. Pretty damn accurate as well. Here's a pic of the 232.

Congrats on the purchase bk! I've heard great things about the 2022.Comment

Re: OS Firearms Thread
Anyone who I've talked to who's in the know about firearms simply rave about the Sig handguns.
Love the feel of the SP2022, and got a great deal on it.
Here's what it looks like.
