Re: Is it socially acceptable for men to own cats?
Yeah, I'm on side of not owning one.
Socially acceptable, sure. It's not like were talking about men wearing purses or something (Oh wait...) It's a damn pet lol
That said, I can't stand cats. I've came across some that are tolerable, but man, if you have a cat, 9/10 you can tell a cat lives there based on the smell, which really bothers me.
Plus, what is their purpose? What do they do besides meow and arch their back when you pet them? They aren't playing fetch, or going to protect your house. Hell, most aren't even good companions or even friendly. My friend, who I've been friends with for almost 20 years, had a cat, and I'll be damned if I saw that thing maybe 5 times. Any visitor would come to their house and that thing would scatter so fast, you wouldn't even see it go into hiding.
But hey, to each their own as they say. If you love cats, then own one. Who gives a crap what anyone else thinks?Cubs | Bulls | Dolphins | 'Noles

Re: Is it socially acceptable for men to own cats?
My Wife has a cat that I have now lived with for 4 years. Absolutely love the little bastard.
That said, whenever anyone asks if I have a cat, I always say "My wife does" and act like I hate it.
sooooooo.....to me it seems a little "Fruity".GT: Event Horizon 0Comment

Re: Is it socially acceptable for men to own cats?
I think as long as you're not dressing them up or taking holiday pictures with them, its ok.
I have guy friends who own cats that are pretty cool. They've thought them to attack people on a single command.
Cats are very interesting animals, as they don't need much attention as dogs would. but owning more than 1 cat, gets you demerits on your man card.Comment

Re: Is it socially acceptable for men to own cats?
Cats and dogs can both be great or a nightmare. It comes down to the individual animal's personality.
Our dog is half wolf, half husky. She's got a very sweet, yet hyper disposition and is not too smart. But I love that dog, and she's one of the prettiest dogs you'll see. And if you are one of the few people she does not like, you won't see a scarier dog.
In my previous marriage I owned a cat. He was a grey and white long-haired type. His name was Husky but the name that 'stuck' was Bud. I got him as a kitten and treated him like a dog, rough housing with him and stuff. He picked ME out at the pet store, stepping on all the other kittens to get to me from the kitty pen. I liked that about him LOL.
He grew up 'stupid and sweet', so he was very friendly and never ever hid. He liked to sleep on the top of the back of the couch, and would occasionally fall off
. He was not stuck up nor had any of that 'cat pride'.
Every day I'd come home from work and he would run to his 'spot' on the couch and yell at me to brush him. That got the purr going and he'd proceed to tell me about his day...very vocal cat which was fun.
Great looking cat, but stupid and had the most vacant stare imaginable. It's my experience that smart cats tend to hide and be aloof a lot of the time, whereas my cat was friendly and always liked attention. One of his more endearing traits was when I was reading on the couch and he'd hop on my lap then duck his head under my book or magazine, then push up on what I'm reading and touch his nose to mine.
Miss that cat...he lived for 14 years. One day, another cat will pick me.GO 'HAWKS!

I have a guy friend who has a cat who always licks you then proceeds to bite you. I hate that cat. But its clumsy as hell. We'd be playing videogames and all you'd hear was a giant crash and then the Cat bolting down the hallway to escape it's embarrassment over missing a jump.Comment

Hahaha! Yeah, cats dashing away from an embarrassment is hilarious, but I don't like psycho/schizo cats at all.I have a guy friend who has a cat who always licks you then proceeds to bite you. Re: Is it socially acceptable for men to own cats?
I guess my hatred towards cats is that I have always been exposed to the not so playful ones. The ones that just do their thing. Find a spot, lay in it, ALL DAY.Comment

You sir have been exposed to the wrong cats. My cat is sweet (although a pain in the butt) I will come home and she will follow me, stop in front of my, fall over and roll around my foot/ankle and meow at me. She also makes a great mop because you can take your foot and scoot her across the floor and she picks up all the dirt
. She also is destructive though and there is no hiding anything from her. I put the bag of cat food on top of the fridge and she gets up there, opens the bag and eats out of it.

Re: Is it socially acceptable for men to own cats?
Our cats are very friendly to us and some love to cuddle and be petted. All just depends on how they've been raised. They also play fetch and love to play with toys.Yeah, I'm on side of not owning one.

Also, if you actually clean the litter box regularly then you shouldn't have a bad smell of cats.
We have 2 poodles as well as cats (I grew up with cats, she grew up with dogs) and the dogs wouldn't do crap to defend our house. They'd bark at any intruder until they got petted.
Some cats can be standoffish, but some dogs can be complete douchebags too...I will never ever ever get a stupid Chihuahua, every one I've seen is such an annoying yapping dog that doesn't stop yapping.
Cats are much nicer to take care of, whereas with the dogs we always have to worry if work gets crazy who can get home to let them outside. Also sucks hardcore on vacations, if we take a week off that's 500ish bucks added on to pay for the pet hotel (for 2 dogs). Cats we just load up extra food, water, and litter and they're solid for a week.
I like both cats and dogs, but just don't totally understand the cat hate (especially when people are blind to the annoyances of dogs). My fiancee wasn't that into cats, but after we'd been living together a while she was all like "I want a kitten!". We have gotten 2 kittens, so now we're locked in at 2 dogs and 3 cats....We just couldn't handle another dog, too much to add on since we have 2 all ready.Last edited by mgoblue; 12-06-2012, 12:55 PM.Nintendo Switch Friend Code: SW-7009-7102-8818Comment

Chicks love cats sooo I see no reason for a guy to not own a cat.
I'm more of a Cat person tho, Dogs are just too annoying at times for me.Saints, LSU, Seminoles, Pelicans, Marlins, LightningComment

Re: Is it socially acceptable for men to own cats?
I had a six month old badass female street cat "adopt" me when she wandered into the music store I was working in on a sub zero day in January and wouldn't leave...
I called my GF, and asked her if I could bring it home until we found the owner...
22 years (and about as many GFs later) she passed...
She was super smart and fought me like Kato in "The Pink Panther" movies, by flying out of nowhere when I came home and (semi playfully) duking it out...
I'm not a cat (or pet) person, so I'm prob "one and done", because I got the coolest cat ever, so that's not likely to happen again...
I don't think it's weird for a "man's man" to own a cat...
Look at Siegfried and Roy!
Well, maybe that's NOT the best example...

Carry On!Comment
