Up here in Washington, no, people hate kindness from strangers for whatever reason.

Down south in Georgia/South Carolina where the rest of my family is, strangers are always saying hello.

That's pretty much the way it is here in Iowa as well, for the most part. I get greeted on campus by someone I don't even know at least once a day. Not by name, of course, but you get the picture.

I woke up, went to work, came home bout an hour ago, and I'm ready for bed again. This sucks.

And my girlfriend is at the county fair and wants me to come but I have no gas in my car and I don't get paid 'til Friday.

So essentially, everybody I know had/is having fun today and I worked all day. Fantastic!

To add on, to not acknlowdge someone is considered rude down South.

As in expect an "F you then" type of face and/or response.

Can't tell you how many times I've walked by someone and asked " How ya doin'" or the like. Or been asked that. Not cause I/him/her are generally concerned, just some sort of southern courtesy I guess. PPL don't do that up north?

I imagine southerners walking through crowded shopping malls stopping to ask literally every single passerby about their day.

There's no way you're that affable. It simply isn't feasible.

I'm getting really old. I actually started questioning if I should stop buying games completely. I haven't touched my ps3 in probably 2 months.

On the saying hi deal. In the immediate area around my house when passing another car it's mandatory to wave. If the other car doesn't wave back you know they aren't from the area.

There was a beer commerial like this a few years ago that was similar. Southern guy walks into a bar in NY and tells his life story to everyone.

I grew up in Seattle and have lived in Memphis since 2003.

My observations are that the North/west coast isn't that unfriendly, and the South isn't that friendly.

I could give people a nod and a cordial 'Good morning' while walking around in Seattle, San Francisco, Sacramento, etc. Just depended on body language of the other person and if you make eye contact or not whether I actually would.

In the South, really, it's about the same to that effect. I will acknowledge that the South can have a friendlier vibe in general. Just depends on who you talk to...and who won the game Saturday during college football season.

No, but in your immediate area, most of the time. Just passing by a person.

And shopping malls around here have taken a hit, but I get what you're saying. There's just not that many crowded places, at least where I live. So it's not like such a burden as you may think.

Interesting. I've lived in the northeast (Connecticut) all my life, but I've taken a couple visits to places like San Francisco, Atlanta, and Nashville. What I've noticed is generally the same, but not always. In San Francisco, I was somewhat lost the first time I went, and being in a big city, there will always be the rude working class person in a rush. As I went back again, I slowly got used to the people and they became nicer. I think it could just be a thing of cultures and different ways of life clashing, but I'm not sure. In the south, I actually found most people friendly, so I kind of found the opposite as you, but you've lived there, and I've only visited each place 2 or 3 times.
