Re: News that make you say WTF?

A decision has been made regarding the Maryland parents that were placed under investigation for child neglect in January after allowing their kids, ages 6 and 10, to walk alone to neighborhood playgrounds. But the ruling, by Montgomery County Child Protective Services (CPS), has not provided any closure on the situation for parents Danielle and Alexander Meitiv.

“The Department has found you responsible for UNSUBSTANTIATED child neglect,” Danielle tells Yahoo Parenting regarding the wording of the decision. “It’s Orwellian to me,” she adds. “It’s incomprehensible.” It also signals a closing of the case. Nevertheless, since it was not a clear and outright dismissal, the family intends to appeal the decision.

You trying to tell me that it is child neglect for letting your 10 year old child walk to the park by themselves ? Are you kidding me ? I was taking subway trains and multiple buses, going all over the city of Chicago by myself at the age of 10. What has this country come to.......smh.

Why were you traveling so much in Chicago by yourself at age 10? I'd find that pretty strange to see that.

Going to the mall to play at the arcade, going to relatives houses, going to friends houses. It was really quite the norm for big city kids who grew up on public transportation. You literally had subways and buses that went everywhere in the city with a map of the route that you were on plastered all over the bus and train. So unless you couldn't read, you had very little chance of getting lost.

Re: News that make you say WTF?

The Utah officers cannot explain it, but a mysterious voice that appeared to come from a wrecked car led them to the rescue of an unconscious 18-month-old baby that had been trapped for 14 hours.

Officer Tyler Beddoes of the Spanish Fork Police Department in Utah was one of four first responders who rescued the infant Lily Groesbeck who was secured in her car seat and left hanging upside down in 40-degree water after her mother drove off a bridge and died in a tragic crash Friday night.
          ...
Then suddenly, Beddoes and the other responders started to hear a distinct female voice call out for help.

"We could see a person in the front seat and then we heard a voice saying 'help me, we're in here.' It was clear as day," he said. "We replied back 'hang in there, we're trying what we can.'"
          ...
The voice motivated them to push harder because they believed there may be someone inside who was still alive. With their adrenaline pumping they pulled the heavy, water-filled car onto its side and discovered the driver was deceased.
          ...
Beddoes has no explanation for the mysterious voice that appeared to come from inside the car. He said he wouldn't believe it really happened except the other officers heard it as well.

"I don't know what I thought I heard," he said. "I'm not a typically religious guy. It's hard to explain. It was definitely something. Where and why it came from I'm not sure."

It's a neighborhood park, so it's not like they were going far (although it doesn't say how far away it is). Large cities are different as kids have to ride the subway to get to school.

It's PC, common sense, and other things combined. When I was that age, I just had to stay out of the street and within ear or eye shot. Now there are more things to worry about because people don't watch out for others and the kids can actually be a problem unsupervised. When people watched out, if they saw you doing something bad, all they had to do was call your parents and that would help stop you from doing it again.

The park was about a mile away.

I grew up in a safe little town and my mom wouldn't have let me do that when I was 10 in the late 90s either.

Pretty sure I was born just as the helicopter-parent generation was taking hold.

From what I can tell child abduction is down from the 80-90s. I'm sure things such as the Amber Alert, which came from my hometown, helps but I also wonder if it's due to parents not letting kids go out by themselves at such a young age.

I went out and played in the woods and what not with friends when I was 10 and younger. Don't get me wrong, I had to be in by a certain time, and I wasn't allowed to stay home by myself until a reasonable age, but as I got older I always continued to push the limits.

If you want to argue the parenting, that's your prerogative, but to call it child neglect is ****ing absurd.

So I didn't broadcast this very much, but one of my students committed suicide at the beginning of this year by jumping in front of a train.

Since then, there have been seven more pedestrian suicides by train in this area alone, and I think two cars have been struck by trains as well. The last three Mondays (including this morning) have seen teen suicides I believe.

I agree and I wasn't attempting to argue the parenting. Just saying that I don't think it's really all that new a phenomenon for parents to be overprotective.

I think cases like John Walsh's son's death and the rise of cable news' hysterics have helped to create and fuel that fire.

Yeah, I'm sure that's contributed to the numbers being lower.

                            It is a ****ty tradeoff.
